Poet's prison torture claim to be investigated by Bahrain officials

Poet's prison torture claim to be investigated by Bahrain officials | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
Ms Gormezi had described how for nine days she was punched and beaten with a baton and electric cable so severely that she lost consciousness. She was threatened with rape or sexual molestation, kept in a freezing cell and forced to clean a lavatory with her bare hands. She says she was told by prison guards that one of those beating her was a woman member of the royal al-Khalifa family.
[HMMMMM! An investigation by Khalifas of Khalifas.....
I wonder what they'll find?!.....Any REAL investigation is by a neutral third party with REAL authority to prosecute the scoundrels commiting such acts!.....Not in todays Bahrain.....]

Bahrain puts Ayat Al-Gormezi under house arrest

"I hope Bahrain can move away from the crisis to a transition into a better future, without discrimination or sectarianism," Qurmozi told Reuters by telephone.

Bahrain crushed the protests and enforced a fierce crackdown in which hundreds, mostly Shi'ites, were arrested and some 2,000 people sacked from their jobs.
...
Qurmozi stepped out of her car Wednesday to hundreds of well-wishers celebrating her release from prison, where she said she was beaten and forced to stick her hands in toilets during interrogations.
...
Qurmozi said she was made to sign a paper saying she would remain at home, not join protests and not speak to the media.
"I'm not afraid to speak out though. I have something to say and I won't be afraid because of a paper I signed," she said.

Poet jailed in protests claims she was beaten by Bahraini royal

Poet jailed in protests claims she was beaten by Bahraini royal | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
A female member of the al-Khalifa royal family in Bahrain has been accused of repeatedly beating the 20-year-old student poet Ayat al-Gormezi when she was in prison accused of reciting a poem at a pro-democracy protest rally criticising the monarchy.

In an interview with The Independent, Ms Gormezi, who became a symbol of resistance to oppression in Bahrain, said that although her interrogators had tried to blindfold her, "I was able to see a woman of about 40 in civilian clothes who was beating me on the head with a baton". Ms Gormezi later described her interrogator to prison guards, who, she said, promptly named the woman as being one of the al-Khalifas with a senior position in the Bahraini security service.

"I was taken many times to her office for fresh beatings," Ms Gormezi said. "She would say, 'You should be proud of the al-Khalifas. They are not going to leave this country. It is their country.' "

BAHRAIN: Sunni detainee, Mohamed Albuflasa, still held under mysterious circumstances

BAHRAIN: Sunni detainee, Mohamed Albuflasa, still held under mysterious circumstances | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
What makes him different from the other imprisoned demonstrators is his unique status as a conservative religious Sunni Muslim. Most of those detained as a result of the recent demonstrations are Shiites along with some secular Sunni politicians. Albuflasa is a follower of the fundamentalist Salafist school in Islam.

The 34-year-old shared a belief with the protesters that the country needed greater democracy and reform, so he stood among the country’s Shiite majority on the first days of the protests at the Pearl Square roundabout.

But as he soon as he spoke of solidarity with the protesters, a security agency detained him.

Nabeel Rajab President of Bahrain Center for Human Rights was beaten, blindfolded and detained | Bahrain Center for Human Rights

Nabeel Rajab President of Bahrain Center for Human Rights was beaten, blindfolded and detained | Bahrain Center for Human Rights | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
Bahraini security forces briefly detained the outspoken head of the country's main human rights group on Sunday, days after a crackdown that drove mainly Shi'ite protesters off the streets.

"At around 1:30 a.m., around 25 thugs wearing civilian clothes came inside the house and were running from room to room, while around 20 more in security forces' uniforms waited outside," Nabeel Rajab told Reuters by telephone.

Rajab had spoken to media about the crackdown and the Bahrain Center for Human Rights put out statements this week accusing Bahraini forces and their Saudi and Emirati allies of "massacres."

Rajab said he was blindfolded and handcuffed and put into the back of a car.

"They beat me and threatened to rape me and they kicked me when I refused to say I love the prime minister," he said.

The Freedom Poet: of the Middle East Ayat Al-Gormezi freed 7/13/11

The Freedom Poet: of the Middle East Ayat Al-Gormezi freed 7/13/11 | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
To explain why the actions of a US diplomatic in a country most people have never heard of will help get Ayat released, a bit of background:

When Stephanie Williams took over in January 2011 as acting United States ambassador to Bahrain (she is officially known as the Chargé d'Affaires), there was discontent in the country and calls for reform. The Shia majority had long complained of poor treatment in employment, housing, and government representation, while the ruling Sunnis, lead by King Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifa, had the lion's share of all that the island nation had to offer, which takes the form of a large supply of oil and pearls.

On February 14, disaffected Shia took to the streets, gathering at the Pearl Roundabout in Bahrain's capital of Manama. There they camped for a month, holding peaceful rallies and demanding the democratic reforms that citizens in other countries in the Middle East and North Africa called for this past Spring.

In Egypt and Tunisia, protest brought hope of reform. In Bahrain it brought a brutal and bloody crackdown in which almost 40 were killed, over 1,000 wounded and close to the same number arrested.

Among those arrested was 20 year-old Ayat al-Gormezi, a student teacher. Masked police arrested Ayat at her home on March 30 for reciting a poem she wrote that was critical of the Bahraini prime minister and the monarchy. On June 12 she was sentenced to one year in prison.
