Bahrain accused of torturing, beating and raping prisoners with U.S. support

Bahrain accused of torturing, beating and raping prisoners with U.S. support | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

If allegations are true of torture and rape the United States should not continue to support the government with millions of dollars in economic and military aid. Despite torture allegations and report the U.S. has transferred over $90 million dollars in cash to Bahrain's despotic regime since President Barack Obama has taken office, a political observer tells Press TV. (See: http://www.presstv.ir/detail/199743.html).

"This is freaking madness!", said Tommy Sanford of Charlotte, a young human rights activist who reviewed reports of torture in Bahrain. "The U.S. is supporting this also. Let there be no mistake. especially when we give them this kind of military aid", he said.

Saudi Claims Alleged Iranian Plotter Also Orchestrated Bahrain Unrest

Despite doubts about an alleged Iranian plot, an adviser to the Saudi government seemed to up the ante by claiming that one of the accused plotters was also involved in a conspiracy to incite protests in Bahrain earlier this year.

[Claims of Iranian meddling in Bahrain are nothing more than fading Regime's futile attempts to retain power by raising the quandry of sectarian strife.  This does evidence, however, that Saudi Arabia is complicit in any assault on Iran that is to come  eminently..........I think there will be a move against Iran's nuclear enrichment locations soon....]

Bahrain Update from the Campaign for Peace and Democracy

Bahrain Update from the Campaign for Peace and Democracy | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Thanks to all of you who earlier this year signed CPD's statement "End U.S. Support for Bahrain's Repressive Government." The statement was signed by more than 1900 people, including several hundred Bahrainis, and was widely circulated in this country and Bahrain.

...

Meanwhile, Washington continues to mute its criticisms of Bahrain's government and the Saudi forces it brought into the country. The U.S. Fifth Fleet remains stationed in Bahrain, military aid to Bahrain continues, and the Obama administration has announced plans for an arms sale to Bahrain worth $53 million. The sale, unless it is successfully blocked in Congress, includes more than 44 armored Humvees and 300 missiles, 50 of which have bunker busting capability.

The Campaign for Peace and Democracy is sending a protest to President Obama and key members of Congress to end this shameful support to Bahraini repression, a letter of condemnation to the Bahraini government, and a message of solidarity to Bahraini's struggling for their democratic rights.

Red Scare in Pearl Square - By Brian Dooley

Red Scare in Pearl Square - By Brian Dooley | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Exploiting real concerns about Iran's influence in the region, Bahrain's government insists that a conspiracy led by Iran and its proxy, the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah, is behind Bahraini citizens' calls for reform -- a claim that echoes South African President P.W. Botha's apartheid government's claim that democracy activists in his country were coordinated by Peking or Moscow. In that case, officials pointed to Pravda's delight at carrying reports of unrest in the country as proof of their conspiracy theory, just as Bahraini rulers now cite the Iranian-funded Press TV's coverage of the democracy protests as evidence of a conspiracy with the democracy activists.

Some U.S. officials now say that Iran might not have instigated the pro-democracy demonstrations in Bahrain, but it's waiting for an opportunity to exploit them. That sounds eerily and depressingly like what used to pass, 26 years ago, as sophisticated analysis about the relationship between South African democracy activists and the Soviet Union.

Foreign Policy Leaders Urge Clinton to Push Bahrain Reforms | (POMED)

Foreign Policy Leaders Urge Clinton to Push Bahrain Reforms | (POMED) | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

In anticipation of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry's (BICI) report on November 23, a bipartisan group of individuals and leading human rights organizations working on U.S. foreign policy and Middle East affairs sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to express its concern regarding ongoing developments in Bahrain. The letter reads, “We are hopeful the BICI report will thoroughly document human rights violations committed in Bahrain that have been independently verified by international human rights organizations [...] Furthermore, we hope the implementation of reform and accountability mechanisms for human rights violations will lead to a process of substantive political reform that is responsive to the legitimate democratic aspirations of the Bahraini people.”

The group also enumerates suggestions for U.S. action, including urging the Government of Bahrain to “unconditionally release political prisoners and end torture, arbitrary detention, and incommunicado detention; protect Shi’a places of worship and religious buildings, rebuild destroyed mosques, and end systematic discrimination in political representation, government recruitment, employment, and naturalization policies; investigate and hold accountable all individuals who authorized, condoned, or committed human rights abuses, including the use of violence or torture against peaceful protesters and detainees.”

Protecting the US-Bahraini relationship by Cole Bockenfeld - Common Ground News Service

Given the vital Bahraini-US relationship, the Obama Administration has the opportunity to play a role in moving national reconciliation forward. One change they could use this influence to affect is the withdrawal of Gulf Cooperation Council forces from Bahrain, a presence that emboldens hardliners within the Bahraini government. ...

Bahrain also has incentive to take constructive steps because it highly values its image in the international community as a Gulf country that is stable, modern and business-friendly. The government’s reaction to peaceful protests risks its rulers joining a club of regional autocrats bent on preserving power through repression. To preserve its reputation as a country of tolerance and prosperity, the Bahraini government could release its political prisoners, dropping politically motivated charges against them, under the rights afforded them by rule of law.

Along a similar vein, Bahraini security forces could allow peaceful political protests, and the government could call for a process for meaningful accountability of Bahraini security forces involved in the arrest, torture, unlawful detention and deaths of prisoners of conscience. Accountability is a critical building block to restore protesters’ trust in the sincerity of the government’s devotion to reform, and allowing non-violent protests creates a peaceful channel for Bahrainis to express their demands.....

US Arms Bahrain While Decrying Russian Weapons in Syria

“The U.S. government appears hypocritical when it condemns the use of force against Syrian protestors but condones similar behavior in Bahrain,” Dr. Natalie J. Goldring, a senior fellow with the Center for Peace and Security Studies in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, told IPS.

Sadly, she said, the administration of President Barack Obama is on shaky ground when it lectures other countries about their arms transfers.

“Its recent announcement of proposed weapons sales to Bahrain signals business as usual, at a time when we should be doing the opposite,” she said.

...

Maria McFarland, deputy Washington director at Human Rights Watch, said, “It will be hard for people to take U.S. statements about democracy and human rights in the Middle East seriously when, rather than hold its ally Bahrain to account, it appears to reward repression with new weapons.”

Goldring pointed out that Ambassador Rice said the opponents of the U.N. resolution would rather sell arms to the Syrian regime than stand with the Syrian people.

“Transferring weapons to Bahrain leaves the U.S. government vulnerable to the same accusation that we would rather sell arms to the Bahrain regime than to stand with the people of Bahrain,” she added.

US politicians seek to halt Bahrain arms deal - Americas - Al Jazeera English

US politicians seek to halt Bahrain arms deal - Americas - Al Jazeera English | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

US members of Congress, concerned about the Bahraini government's response to a popular uprising, introduced a rare measure that would halt a $53m arms sale to the Gulf Arab state.

US Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon and US Representative James McGovern of Massachusetts, both Democrats, said they introduced resolutions in both houses of Congress on Friday to prevent the sale of US weapons to Bahrain "until meaningful steps are taken to improve human rights" there.

"Selling weapons to a regime that is violently suppressing peaceful civil dissent and violating human rights is antithetical to our foreign policy goals and the principle of basic rights for all that the US has worked hard to promote," Wyden said in a statement posted on his website.

"The US should not reward a regime that actively suppresses its people. This resolution will withhold the sale of arms to Bahrain until the ruling family shows a real commitment to human rights," Wyden said.
