The death of a citizen journalist - Rami al-Sayed in Syria

The death of a citizen journalist - Rami al-Sayed in Syria | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Today, we honor one of those citizen journalists, Rami al-Sayed, who gave his life in the cause of letting the world see what is happening inside his home country of Syria.

Rami was killed during the shelling of Homs on Tuesday, and the last video on his YouTube account, which has been source of some of the most compelling video from Homs in recent months, was video of his own body, posted by his brother.

Tannah Gravelis's curator insight, August 22, 2014 3:28 AM

I have chosen to add this article, as I believe it is an example of what the concept of the citizen journalist is all about. Rami was trying to shed light onto a topic that much of the worlds population has very little knowledge on, despite it being in the news. All information surrounding this conflict has been filtered through the media, but have been filtered in one way or another, be it an editors bias or due to laws But here is a citizen, in the middle of the conflict, showing exactly what he is experiencing, completely unfiltered.

I intend to look further into Rami and see if i can use him as a prime example of the citizen journalist.

Russia has blood on its hands – the plight of Syria

Russia has blood on its hands – the plight of Syria | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Months have passed between Russia’s crucial veto at the UN security council that have effectively scuppered any chance of effective international sanctions....

Russia, through the continued irresponsible use of its veto, and its continued arms deals with Syria has got blood on its hand. We have seen only snippets of the atrocities that are taking place as the Syrian regime continues to deny free and unfettered access to international human rights monitors. History will tell us the extent of what is occurring, all we know for sure now is that Russia is allowing this bloodshed to continue.

Syria: "The United Nations has given Assad the green light to kill his people and that is what he is doing

Syria: "The United Nations has given Assad the green light to kill his people and that is what he is doing | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

..."It was unbelievable in Bab al-Amr today. There was shelling everywhere: machine guns, mortars, everything. I don't know what to say, they were using everything against us. Trust me there was no resistance.

"All day, we could hear the sounds of the injured. They were screaming 'God is greatest' and saying 'There is no other God but God'. I saw a lot of the injuries. The streets were terrible.

"The United Nations has given Assad the green light to kill his people and that is what he is doing. You cannot imagine how brutal it has been here. The rockets are not stopping. They have a strange sound and there is no way of fighting back, or of escaping.

"There is so much damage to Bab al-Amr. If we have 100 houses here, 40% of them have been damaged. Their plan is to bomb us for five days and then to enter the suburb to finish us off. That is what we believe."

Syria’s Revolution: Created by Local Women & Men Smoking Four Packs a Day | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Who populates the Syrian revolution? The Syrian revolution has three core populations: urbanite survivors of the 2001 Damascus Spring, disenfranchised classes rural and urban, and the traditional opposition. Local histories, not dissidents abroad or foreign entities, created this revolution. Yet some international analysts remain blind to the people of our revolution.

In Geneva, a panel of U.N. human rights experts said Thursday that the United Nations has a secret list of top Syrian officials who could face investigation for crimes against humanity carried out by security forces in their crackdown against the anti-government uprising.
The U.N. experts indicated that the list goes as high as Assad.

U.S. must bring pressure to bear on Bahrain

U.S. must bring pressure to bear on Bahrain | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

As President Obama said in a searing statement Saturday, by rejecting the regime and its criminal brutality “we stand for principles that include universal rights for all people and just political and economic reform.”

For that stance to be effective, however, it must be consistent across the region....That’s why U.S. policy in the Persian Gulf emirate of Bahrain continues to be disturbing.....The United States has exceptional influence in Bahrain, in part because the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet is based there. But the Obama administration has mostly refrained from using that influence. ....U.S. criticism of Russia for continuing to arm the Assad regime will sound more credible when American military aid to Arab allies engaged in repression comes to a complete and unambiguous halt.
