Saudi regime commits new crime against protesters in al-Qatif | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

The region of al-Qatif in Saudi Arabia witnessed a “silent” crime a couple of days ago, when the authorities of the House of Saud used live bullets, once again, to disperse a peaceful protest, killing one person and injuring many others.
...
The Interior Ministry raided the Showeika neighborhood in al-Qatif in the Eastern Region, shooting live rounds from inside civilian cars at a peaceful protest organized by a group of young men in support of arrested cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr. About 10 protesters were injured; they fell to the ground, spilling their blood on the protest signs that they were carrying, as seen in photos shared online by local activists.

Saudi, Chad, Nigeria, Chile, Lithuania elected to U.N. Security Council | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

...

"Saudi Arabia and Chad have abysmal records on human rights."

Saudi Arabia, a patriarchal society that applies an austere version of Sunni Islam, has repeatedly been slammed for its record on women's rights. Last month it topped a World Bank list of countries with laws that limit women's economic potential.

Saudi Arabia, which is also campaigning to be elected to the U.N. Human Rights Council, grants fathers guardianship over their daughters, giving them control over who they can marry and when, and it is also the only country in the world where women are barred from driving.

Human Rights Watch said taking up these prominent U.N. positions should spur Riyadh to "clean up its act."...

Simultaneous “Sit-ins for Freedom” Held Across Saudi Cities · Global Voices

Simultaneous “Sit-ins for Freedom” Held Across Saudi Cities · Global Voices | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Small groups of Saudi women held simultaneous “Sit-ins for Freedom” across Saudi cities on June 10, 2013, which were called for by anonymous advocacy group @almonaseron [The Supporters] to call for release of their imprisoned relatives. As a result, over 140 protesters, men and women, were arrested by Saudi forces during the previous two days.

Independent human rights sources say there are over 30,000 arbitrarily imprisoned people [ar], many of whom were arrested in the massive, post-9/11 “war on terrorism”. The detainees were arrested without a warrant and have not had access to lawyers and a trial. Protests in Saudi Arabia are strictly prohibited and participants risk spending many months in prison if they get caught. This, however, did not stop prisoners’ relatives from challenging the ban many times in small numbers over the past two years.....

"Ana Lama" : Anger over Saudi child death case

"Ana Lama" : Anger over Saudi child death case | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

The case of a five-year-old Saudi girl who died after allegedly being beaten by her father has sparked outrage and an online campaign in the kingdom.

The girl, Lama, was the daughter of Fayhan al-Ghamdi, an Islamic preacher who made regular appearances on TV.

He was arrested after Lama's death in November but was reportedly absolved by the judge in the case.

The verdict has sparked an online campaign calling for punishment for violence against women and children.

Saudi media reports said that Ghamdi had paid 200,000 riyals ($50,000; £31,500) in "blood money" - a sum that can be paid to relatives of a murder victim and which, if accepted, can replace a death sentence.

The amount is half what would have been necessary if Lama had been male. ...

Saudi Arabia 'intensifies Twitter crackdown'

Saudi Arabia 'intensifies Twitter crackdown' | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Saudi authorities have stepped up their crackdown on online dissidents, Human Rights Watch said, alleging that prosecutors and judges use "vague law" to charge citizens for peaceful tweets and social media comments.

The New York-based rights organisation on Sunday called on the government to end the crackdown and live up to its obligations to respect free speech.

Three prominent lawyers were convicted of criticising the Justice Ministry last month and sentenced to prison terms of between five and eight years.

Instead of pursuing their peaceful online critics, Saudi officials would be better employed in carrying out much-needed reforms

Sarah Leah Whitson, Human Rights Watch

Police also detained a liberal women’s rights activist in connection with tweets that allegedly criticised religious officials and promoted the right of Saudi women to drive.

"These prosecutions show just how sensitive the Saudi authorities have become to the ability of ordinary citizens to voice opinions online that the government considers controversial or taboo," said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch (HRW).

Saudi Arabia- Report: Growing campaign of judicial harassment and intimidation of human rights defenders

Saudi Arabia- Report: Growing campaign of judicial harassment and intimidation of human rights defenders | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

The GCHR is gravely concerned that the Saudi authorities continue, under the direct orders of senior officials within the Ministry of Interior, to systemically target human rights defenders using false or fabricated charges. Furthermore, the judiciary is being used to issue unfair judgments against human rights defenders in order to stop their peaceful and legitimate work in the field of human rights.

The following recent cases illustrate the campaign of intimidation and harassment against human rights defenders. ....

Destroying a Nation State: US-Saudi Funded Terrorists Sowing Chaos in Pakistan | Global Research

Destroying a Nation State: US-Saudi Funded Terrorists Sowing Chaos in Pakistan | Global Research | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s southwest Baluchistan province, bordering both US-occupied Afghanistan as well as Iran, was the site of a grisly market bombing that has killed over 80 people.According to reports, the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi has claimed responsibility for the attack. Billed as a “Sunni extremist group,” it instead fits the pattern of global terrorism sponsored by the US, Israel, and their Arab partners Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

The terrorist Lashkar-e-Jhangvi group was in fact created, according to the BBC, to counter Iran’s Islamic Revolution in the 1980′s, and is still active today. Considering the openly admitted US-Israeli-Saudi plot to use Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups across the Middle East to counter Iran’s influence, it begs the question whether these same interests are funding terrorism in Pakistan to not only counter Iranian-sympathetic Pakistani communities, but to undermine and destabilize Pakistan itself......
