Apartheid Israel & over 60 years of racism, war, theft & Palestinian genocide

Apartheid Israel & over 60 years of racism, war, theft & Palestinian genocide | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

However there is a further shocking dimension to the human cost of Israel, namely the effect on excess death in its neighbours due to its war and occupation policies. Using UN Population Division data one can estimate that the 1950-2005 excess deaths in all countries partly occupied by the State of Israel in the last 60 years totalled 24 million. The breakdown (1950-2005 excess deaths/2005 population) for the State of Israel and its violated neighbours is as follows: Israel [0.095m/6.685m =1.4%] – Egypt [19.818m/74.878m = 26.5%], Jordan [0.630m/5.750m = 11.0%], Lebanon [0.535m/3.761m = 14.2%], Occupied Palestinian Territories [0.677m/3.815m = 17.7%], Syria [2.198m/18.650m = 11.8%], total = 23.858m/106.854 = 22.3%

Please join our campaign to raise awareness in the British Parliament, and to ask the government to apply pressure on the Israeli government to respect the rights of Gaza's population. We want to send each MP a gift of conscience, and ask them to be guided by their morality to stand up to human rights violations.

Israeli navy intercepts Gaza-bound boats.....Israeli pirates!

Israeli navy intercepts Gaza-bound boats.....Israeli pirates! | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The Israeli navy Friday boarded two boats carrying pro-Palestinian activists toward the Gaza Strip in a fresh challenge to Israel's blockade of the Islamist-controlled territory.

...

A U.N. report on Israel's interception of the 2010 Turkish ship said the blockade was a "legitimate security measure," adding "its implementation complied with the requirements of international law." Turkey has rejected that ruling.

Pro-Palestinian groups behind the latest attempt to reach Gaza by sea condemn the blockade as illegal and inhumane.

"We are going to keep sending boats until the immoral blockade of Gaza is lifted," Claudia Saba, a spokeswoman for the Irish Ship to Gaza group told Irish state broadcaster RTE.

Palestine’s Time - Michel Rocard - Project Syndicate

Palestine’s Time - Michel Rocard - Project Syndicate | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
With its refusal to negotiate for a realistic peace, Israel is effectively demanding the disappearance of Palestinian identity. The rest of the world should not tolerate that effort, even if the US does.

...

For a long time, Israeli leaders have lobbied supporters like me, who, since the Holocaust, have defended the Jewish people’s right to security and statehood. But Israel’s tactics regarding Palestine have been unconscionable. They have strengthened Hamas, a hostile opponent of peace, pushed the US to vote against the Palestinian state whose birth it defends, and refused outright to accept any conditions that might resolve the conflict.

No civilized country can permit this behavior. Palestine must be granted legal status so that, at the very least, its people will have access to the international legal court, with the understanding that international support is required to aid and defend this young state.

The Americans have lost their moral right to leadership in resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict. It is time for Europe to step into the fray.

‘Recognition of Palestine obligatory’ - The Egyptian Gazette

‘Recognition of Palestine obligatory’ - The Egyptian Gazette | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

CAIRO " Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told a meeting of Arab foreign ministers on Tuesday that the recognition of a Palestinian state is an "obligation".

...

"The Palestinian issue is all about human dignity, so we should work hard together to help them obtain their rights. It's our common responsibility.
“The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not only threatening the Middle East, but it's also an international issue. This situation should not continue and Palestine should be recognised," he told the gathering at the Arab League (AL) headquarters in Cairo’s Tahrir Square.
"We will all support this. Before the end of this month, we will see that the Palestinian situation has changed. We should work for the Palestinian flag to be raised in the UN.”
The Palestinians are preparing to submit a formal request to become the 194th member of the United Nations when the General Assembly begins its meetings on September 20.
"Let's raise the Palestinian flag as this flag is a symbol of peace and justice in the Middle East," Erdogan added to great applause.
Erdogan, who is on a three-day visit to Egypt, stressed that Israel has isolated itself and must "pay the price" after refusing to apologise for its raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla last year.
Turkey has suspended military ties with Israel and expelled top Israeli diplomats, as it pledges to support the Palestinians' statehood bid. It has also vowed to get the Turkish Navy to escort Gaza-bound aid ships in the future.

The Russell Tribunal on Palestine can promote peace, truth and reconciliation

The Russell Tribunal on Palestine can promote peace, truth and reconciliation | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
Desmond Tutu and Michael Mansfield: The Israel-Palestine situation demands truth and reconciliation.

...We have visited Israel/Palestine on a number of occasions and every time have been struck by the similarities with the South African apartheid regime. The separate roads and areas for Palestinians, the humiliation at roadblocks and checkpoints, the evictions and house demolitions. Parts of East Jerusalem resemble what was District Six in Cape Town. It is a cause for abiding sadness and anguish. It revolves around the way in which the arrogance of power brings about a desensitisation. Once this has occurred it permits atrocious acts and attitudes to be visited on those over whom power and control are exercised. What such people are doing to themselves just as much as their victims should also be of concern.

In the video, the group accused the Israeli government of breaching international law and of piracy, because IDF naval commandos boarded the boats 35 nautical miles from the coast, in international waters.

“We do not tolerate this kind of repeated offensive behavior against unarmed civilians,” the group said in the video message.

“We along with 127 countries recognize Palestine as a state for the people of Palestine and such acts by you and your military are acts of war against a sovereign nation,” they added.

UN Council debates Palestine's statehood bid, but no vote

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council's monthly debate on the Middle East on Monday focused, not unusually, on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but this time with more passion because it was only last month the Palestinians announced their intention to seek statehood.

"It is time for the Security Council to shoulder its responsibilities by approving our application and making positive recommendation to the General Assembly for Palestine's admission to membership," said Riyad Mansour, Palestine's permanent observer to the United Nations. "This would be the most just and appropriate outcome of this process."

Palestine’s UN Cliffhanger, Then and Now | Foreign Affairs

The peace process has yielded little movement since the violence of the second intifada erupted in 2000 and Israel’s subsequent swing to the right. Israel’s hyper-proportional parliamentary system ensures that small parties bear disproportionate influence in governing coalitions. Any government that moves to meet Palestinian demands risks the defection of these parties, some of which seem to exist solely to prevent a peace deal. Israeli leaders are unwilling to tackle the entrenchment of the settlers, illegal under international law, who have become one of the most powerful political forces in the country.

The Palestinian initiative, then, is an act of desperation born of deep frustration. Abbas, who by experience and temperament is not confrontational, has made clear that he prefers negotiations. It was only in the absence of viable terms for talks that he opted to go to the UN, even though he risks alienating the only ally that can deliver Israel in negotiations -- the United States. And if he backs down without achieving anything concrete, or if efforts for a crucial Fatah-Hamas reconciliation are undercut, his political standing at home will be severely weakened. (Hamas, hedging its bets, has dissociated itself from the UN move without opposing it.) Those seeking to persuade him to return to negotiations would have to show him a persuasive path forward -- one that includes a freeze of settlement construction. No wonder he is resorting to the diplomatic equivalent of a Hail Mary pass.

Successful Palestine Statehood Vote Looms | FrontPage Magazine

While a vote in the General Assembly alone would not confer full UN membership rights to a Palestinian state, it would open the door for the Palestinians to join various UN bodies and treaties. Of most concern to Israel, an observer state status might well allow the Palestinians to become a treaty member of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and pursue claims there against Israel for alleged war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity. Although Israel is not itself a member of the ICC, the court could still take jurisdiction of such claims if they are alleged to have arisen within the territory of a Palestinian state that is an ICC member.
