Shiites lash out after Pakistan bombing kills 81

Shiites lash out after Pakistan bombing kills 81 | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — Members of the Pakistani Shiite Hazara community Sunday threatened to hold widespread protests if the government did not arrest within 48 hours the people responsible for a massive bombing that killed 81 people in a southwestern city.

Saturday's blast at a produce market in Quetta underlined the precarious situation for Shiites living in a majority Sunni country where many extremist groups don't consider them real Muslims. Some 160 people were also wounded in the blast.

Most of the dead and wounded were Hazaras, an ethnic group that migrated from Afghanistan over a century ago. Shiite Muslims, including Hazaras, have often been targeted by Sunni extremists inBaluchistan province, of which Quetta is the capital, as well as in the southern city of Karachi and northwestern Pakistan.

The vice chairman of the Hazara Democratic Party, a political group representing Hazaras, said Sunday that the party was giving the government 48 hours to find those responsible for the attack and arrest them.

"Otherwise, the Hazara community will start a protest in Pakistan and the world over," said Azizullah Hazara. ....

Is Pakistan heading for disaster in Balochistan?

Is Pakistan heading for disaster in Balochistan? | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Washington, DC - The behaviour of the powerful elite of Islamabad reminds me of the captain and crew of the RMS Titanic sailing into the night, heading straight towards an iceberg. The civilian, military and judicial authorities are locked up in a tussle coloured by political positions and personal egos. And there is a dangerous disconnect between Islamabad and the enormous problems that loom on the Pakistani horizon.

Law and order appears to have collapsed in many parts of the country. In the north-east, the former Frontier Province, there are daily killings as suicide bombers and the army continuously fight each other. Unemployment is widespread and inflation is sky-high. And there is still a desperate shortage of electricity and gas in much of the country.

But perhaps none of these problems is more pressing than the situation in Balochistan. If the simmering, but widespread movement for independence spins out of control, Pakistan will find it almost impossible to maintain nationhood.

I was reminded of Balochistan by the recent visit of Malik Siraj Akbar to my office. It made me happy to think back to my associations with its people and places, but I also became distressed as I thought of the current situation: a climate of killings and so-called "disappearances". ...

Grand Ayatollah Makarem Condemns Int’l Bodies’ Silence over Wahhabis’ Crimes | The Shia Post

Grand Ayatollah Makarem Condemns Int’l Bodies’ Silence over Wahhabis’ Crimes | The Shia Post | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi condemned the massacre of Shia Muslims in Pakistan by radical Wahhabis and slammed international bodies for their silence over the carnage.  Speaking at Azam Mosque in the holy city of Qom on Wednesday, the grand source of emulation described the killing of Shia Muslims in Pakistan as horrendous and said international bodies have kept quiet over the crimes of Wahhabis.

How long should these massacres continue and innocent lives perish?, he asked.

Grand Ayatollah Shirazi said the United States and Saudi Arabia fund these terrorists as well as those committing crimes in Syria and elsewhere.

He underlined that such crimes will not impede the growth of the school of Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS).

He also said that Shia Muslims are vigilant and will not retaliate to create a sectarian war, which is what the enemies pursue.

The senior cleric further censured the government of Pakistan for failing to provide security for its Shia population and its indifference to the crimes against Shi’ites in the country.

In the latest example of anti-Shia crimes by Wahabis, two bombs ripped through a predominantly Shia neighborhood in the city of Quetta, Pakistan, last week, killing nearly 100 people.

Shia leaders present their demands as sit-in continues | The Shia Post

Shia Leaders Present Their Demands As Sit-In Continues

(LUBP) After a day of tragedy in Quetta in which over 100 Shias and more than 10 Sunnis were killed by Deobandi militants (Sipah Sahaba aka ASWJ) and more than 200 wounded, Shias have staged a sit-in protest for indefinite period. A big number of women and children are also participating in it. The protest was called after local Shia leaders decided not to bury the dead unless their demands are met.

Their demands are:

1. Full enforcement of the legal ban on Sipah Sahaba which currently is allowed to operate freely under new name ASWJ. Arrest ASWJ leaders (namely Ahmed Ludhianvi, Malik Ishaq, Tahir Ashrafi, Aurangzeb Farooqi, Qazi Nisar) and punish them for inciting hate speech against Shia Muslims;

2.Carry out targeted operation against leaders and militants of Sipah Sahaba (currently operating as ASWJ-LeJ); arrest them and provide exemplary punishment to them after summary hearings;

3. Urgently implement death sentence to ASWJ-LeJ militants already sentenced to death by the court;Stop allowing publication of threats to Shia community by LeJ-SSP in local newspapers and TV channels.

4. Stop providing air time to Ahmed Ludhianvi, Tahir Ashrafi, Malik Ishaq and other ASWJ-LeJ leaders in the media;

5. Financially compensate over 1000 Shia victims (Rs. 1 million per victim), and provide Rs.0.5 million plus free medical facilities to the wounded;

6. Provide jobs to every victim who lost their guardians or male members;

7. Provide protection to the Shia businessmen, transporters, vendors, officers, school, college and university students;

8. Set up security check posts of police in areas where Shias have been regularly targeted. In particular, set up permanent check posts in and around Alamdar Road and Hazara Town;

9. Provision of free licensed weapons for self defence, X-Ray scanners, training to Shia volunteers to defend their life, property, family. Allow Shia scouts and volunteers to set up private security in Shia areas;

10. End of apartheid in the Balochistan University and other institutions against the Shia Hazaras, and all Shias;

11. Resettle the Shia Hazara families who were evicted from Khuzdar and Machh and protect and compnesate them;

12. Full and accurate coverage of Shia genocide by Deobandi militants of Sipah Sahaba (ASWJ-LeJ) in media; must not obfuscate as Hazara specific ethnic or Sunni-Shia sectarian violence. Pakistan government, in particular Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority PEMRA, must take action against those media channels and newspapers which misrepresent Shia genocide as Sunni vs Shia sectarian violence or present it as Hazara specific ethnic violence.

13. Set up high-level judicial inquiry, also including members of the UN, HRW, Amnesty and HRCP, to investigate allegations of collusion between militant groups and military intelligence and paramilitary forces.

Gunmen in Pakistan kill 5 female teachers, two others in ambush

Gunmen in Pakistan kill 5 female teachers, two others in ambush | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Gunmen killed five female teachers and two other people on Tuesday in an ambush on a van carrying workers home from their jobs at a community center in northwest Pakistan, officials said.

The van was transporting teachers and aid workers from the center in conservative Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Two health workers, one man and one woman, were also killed and the driver was wounded.

The attack was a reminder of the risks faced by educators and aid workers, especially women, in an area where Islamic militants often target women and girls trying to get an education. Many militants in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province oppose female education and have blown up schools and killed female educators as a way to discourage girls from getting an education.

In a case in the same province that gained international attention, a Taliban gunman shot 15-year-old Malala Yousufzai in the head last October for criticizing the militants and promoting girls' education. She is currently recovering in Britain. ....

Pakistan receives $688 million from US under CSF | MSN Pakistan | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

KARACHI: Pakistan has received $688 million from the United States under the Coalition Support Fund (CSF). Under the CSF, Pakistan is reimbursed by the US for expenses incurred in the war of terror. According to the Minister of State for Finance Salim Mandviwalla , $688 million was received by Pakistan and this figure was also confirmed by a spokesperson from the State Bank. In August 2012, Pakistan had received $1.12 billion from the US under the fund. 60 percent of the fund is allocated to the army while the remaining amount is used to meet the fiscal deficit.

Spencer Haskins's insight:

With budegetary crises arising here in the US, why is this money sent abroad.  There is extensive corruption in Pakistan and it is a harborer of terrorism.  This money is not for expenses incurred in the war ON terrorism, it is for the US fostering terrorism through Pakistan as a surrogate.  How many Baloch will this kill, how many Kashmiri?  How many Shia?

Where genocide is legal by Shahana Fatima

There is a place no one wishes to speak of,
A place where silence and complacence is creed,
Governed by injustice,
Bloodlust and greed.
A place of constant mourning,
Lamenting and sorrow,
Where precious loved ones are laid to rest,
With no dreams of tomorrow.
It’s a place where hopes are shattered,
Where hope can dare to hope no more,
Where suffering is the only option,
Peace aloof; like never before.
It exists, this place, I assure you so,
On God’s green Earth, a gift to mankind!
Now ruled and represented ,
By the deaf, dumb and blind,
Where humanity is slaughtered
By bullets, guns and ambition,
Where genocide is legal,
Without pre-condition!
Do you know of this place?
Tell me! Do you know?
Has anyone shown you,
Where rivers of tears and blood flow?
Where prayers are unanswered,
And cries are unheard.
Where faith is punished
And justice unserved.

Pakistan petrol attack 'kills 18' | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
At least 18 people are killed after attackers open fire at a petrol station in south-western Pakistan, triggering a huge blaze, officials say.

The Khuzdar attack happened late on Friday afternoon, senior Khuzdar official Abdul Mansoor Kakar told reporters.

He said the gunmen attacked a passenger van, and one of the bullets hit petrol pumps as the vehicle was refuelling.

This triggered a massive fire, leaving some bodies charred beyond recognition.

Balochistan is one of Pakistan's most impoverished provinces, despite having vast natural resources.

It has also been plagued by sectarian violence in recent months - with many attacks by hardline Sunni Muslims on the minority Shia community.

On top of all that, says the BBC's Ilyas Khan in Islamabad, Balochistan is now facing an acute administrative crisis and power struggle amid the uncertainty of national elections next spring.

Last month, the Balochistan government was told in a Supreme Court ruling that it had "lost the authority to govern the province", adds our correspondent.

The Baloch National Front (BNF) has announced to observe 14 August, Pakistan’s Independence Day, as a Black Day in Balochistan and appealed the Baloch nation for a shutter down protest tomorrow.

According to details the BNF has said that 14 August is a Black Day in the region because the British in collaboration with other international powers had established an unnatural state on this day, which has been engaged in terrorising Baloch people, other oppressed nations and peace loving countries of world since its existence. The BNF said, “All its departments including the army, security agencies, Parliament and judiciary are corrupt and they only serve the interest of Punjab.”

The BNF further said that Pakistan is engaged in Baloch genocide from past six decades whereas the international powers’ own creation ‘Pakistan’ of has become a great danger for Britain, America and rest of the world. Whether it is the genocide of Baloch Nation, massacre of Bengalis and destruction of Afghanistan’s peace or promoting religious extremism Pakistan has always tended to harm world peace.

The BNF spokesperson said in fact today Pakistan has become a factory of religious fundamentalism from where it brainwashes thousands of innocent people and send to Afghanistan to serve her expansionist interests. Whereas it also uses these elements to black mail her neighbouring countries, America and the world community.

The existence of Pakistan and hence 14 August is a black day of the oppressed people of the region. This state to continue its colonial and exploitative policy has killed hundreds of thousands of Bengalis suppressed the Sindhis and occupied the Baloch sovereign state. Thousands of Baloch have been abducted and it continues to indiscriminately bomb civilians’ populations in Balochistan. ...

The Possible American Withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Beginning of Problems for Russia - Balochwarna News

The Possible American Withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Beginning of Problems for Russia - Balochwarna News | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

...

It is almost misfortunate of Russia and the Ex-Soviet Republicans that since 1992 till the date, through different warlords, Islamic Propagandist Party, (Islami Tabliqi Jumaet) and particularly through extremist religious students, Pakistan has expanded its Islamic ideology to such an extent in Central Asia that it could wreak havoc at any time whenever it felt necessary to under particular conditions. And Russia and its neighbors cannot afford to tolerate it under current situation. To shorten the debate, the reason why Pakistan cannot be taken into the game is because it has always proven to be an untrustworthy partner, and also neither does it has any capacity of doing any good to any end. So, if the world really wants a result oriented war against terrorism, unlike Pakistan, than they should seriously consider the natural geography of different nationalities in that region and support their freedom movements, otherwise Pakistan is already a sunken ship, it can drown their ships too.

Pakistan Shia families refuse to bury dead

Pakistan Shia families refuse to bury dead | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Families of Shia Muslims targeted in twin bombings that killed at least 86 people in the Pakistani city of Quetta are refusing to bury their dead unless the government does more to protect them from increasing violence targeting their sect.

Protesters in Quetta have staged a sit-in since Friday evening, and demonstrations were held in solidarity with them in other cities, including Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad, on both Friday and Saturday.

"It is winter, it is extremely cold in Quetta, we're told it was raining last night, and over 20 hours after those people had been killed in that indiscriminate bombing, the Shia community are sitting there, thousands of them, and they want an answer from the government. They want the security forces to take over control of the city and to provide security to the people," reported Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder from Islamabad.

The attack on a billiards hall on Thursday night in the southwestern city marked a bloody start to the new year after a human rights group said 2012 was the deadliest ever for Shias in the majority Sunni Muslim country.

Many of the attacks last year were carried out by Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a Sunni extremist group that claimed responsibility for the bombing of the billiards hall.

The attack was one of three that took place across Pakistan on Thursday, killing 120 people in the country's deadliest day in five years.

The billiards hall was located in a predominantly Shia area, and most of the dead and wounded were from the sect.

Members of the community laid about 50 of their dead on the street on Friday, saying that they would not bury them until the government improves security in the area.

Islamic custom dictates the dead should be buried as soon possible.

Authorities said that the protest had ended late on Friday night, but by Saturday morning, many demonstrators were still holding their positions.

Deadly bomb strikes Pakistani Shia pilgrims

Deadly bomb strikes Pakistani Shia pilgrims | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
Nineteen people killed after bomb strikes pair of buses carrying Shia Muslims in southwest Balochistan province.
Spencer Haskins's insight:

1.  I do not usually post terrorism news....  I do here due to my hopes that minor changes might preclude these attacks in the future.

2.  A greater distance between the buses, and Shia pilgrims being less concentrated in their movements would make this more difficult.

3.  If these buses are devoted to a business of providing transport for Shia pilgrims exclusively, then that makes them targetable, a more diversified transport method might fetter attacks and limit casualties while providing more pilgrims a successful pilgrimage and greater religious expression/freedom.

4.  These changes in Shia activity are recommended not as an idictment of the Shiite population.  Sadly, sometimes the best method to avert intolerance is avoidance.  The Shia are categorically sinless in these attacks, they are victims.  Shiites must be protected!

Malala Yousafzai: The Latest Victim in the War on Children in Pakistan | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

A 14-year-old activist and blogger was shot in the head on her way back from school in Pakistan’s Swat Valley on Tuesday, the latest in a troubling string of incidents involving children in Pakistan. Malala Yousafzai was injured along with two travel companions when Taliban assailants opened fire on their vehicle in the town of Mingora. On Wednesday, Yousafzai, who started blogging about the Taliban’s ban on girls’ education in Swat when she was 11, had undergone successful surgery in a hospital in Peshawar to remove a bullet from her head.

The attack on Yousafzai made news in no small part because the Pakistani government awarded the precocious teenager a National Peace Award in December for her bravery in exposing the difficulties of living in the oppressive shadow of the Taliban. She has spoken publicly about children’s rights in Swat, and had been nominated for an international children’s peace prize. “The people of Swat are not terrorists,” she told al-Jazeera in a 2010 interview, during a period when the Taliban was in retreat. “If this new generation is not given pens, they will be given guns by terrorists.”

“She was caught tearing and dumping a few pages of Quranic text while playing outside her home in Islamabad. The act enraged Muslims in the neighbourhood who immediately tried to intimidate and pressurise the police to arrest the girl and her mother.

Rehman Malik , of Pakistan, is involved in crimes against humanity in Balochistan

Rehman Malik , of Pakistan, is involved in crimes against humanity in Balochistan | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

: The Baloch patriot leader, Hyrbyair Marri, has strongly criticized the Pakistan Media, Judiciary and other institutions, adding that Pakistan has prepared for a full scale military operation in Balochistan against Baloch nation.

The Baloch leader said that Rehman Malik, the federal interior minister of Pakistan, is involved in war crimes in Balochistan. Frontier Corps in Balochistan operates directly under the supervision of Rehman Malik. The FC, MI & ISI also abduct Baloch youth on his orders. The FC’s involvement in extra judicial killings and abductions of Baloch youth was recently proven when the IG police not only presented a video footage to the Supreme Court of Pakistan but he also appeared before the court and gave evidence. Despite this concrete proof, the Baloch youth shown in the video footage being abducted by FC were later killed and dumped.

He further said, “Rehman Malik, Pakistani judiciary and media are now doing baseless propaganda in favor of the Pakistani armed forces in order to wipe the blood stained hands of Pakistani Army, FC and ISI and measures being taken to make the conditions favorable for a large-scale military operation in Balochistan. In 2010 Rehman Malik had himself publicly ordered to use brute force against Baloch Student Organisation –Azad and few specific pro-independence political parties. Hundreds of Baloch youth have been extra judicially killed and dumped since then. Now once again Rehman Malik and FC are all set for a massive military adventure in Balochistan. Along with federal and provincial government, Supreme Court is also not only supporting killing of Baloch people but as well as giving protection to Pakistani Army, FC; ISI & MI. Pakistani Media is also contributing in this sorry state of affairs by concealing the brutalities inflicted on Baloch people.”

....

The Baloch leader said that the Baloch nation was struggling for its independence for past six decades with very limited resources whereas Pakistan is continuously putting allegations on Baloch nation of receiving foreign funds and support. If there were any foreign support, he said, Balochistan would have been an independent state long ago. Addressing the International Community Mr Marri said, “We still expect and want Afghanistan, America and the civilized world to support the just cause of Baloch nation. We have had strong historical ties with Afghanistan long before Pakistan even came into existence. Afghan and Baloch nation have lived in peace for centuries and had mutual respect. But Pakistan does not bear this relation because she considers Afghanistan and Balochistan her colonies.”

Mr. Hyrbyair Marri said that it was not only difficult but impossible for Baloch nation to live with Pakistan. The Baloch own a distinct language, culture, geography and thousands of year old history. Our dignity, identity and self-esteem are unsafe in Pakistan and neither does Pakistan consider us as human beings, said Mr Marri adding that Pakistan has imposed foreign language and culture on the Baloch nation. Urdu is considered Pakistan’s National language but the fact of the matter is that all nations living in Pakistan, Punjabis, Sindhis and Pashtuns have their own distinct languages. Urdu is in fact a military language from 18th century; the Turks and Mughals invented it to communicate with people of India.
