But Nabeel Rajab, President of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, rebuked Ghaith and estimated that more than 250 prisoners were now refusing food.

“There are hundreds of them, it is not correct that the number is falling. We have a history of the interior ministry misleading people and giving out false information,” he told Al-Akhbar.

“Nobody in Bahrain believes anything coming out of this ministry.”

...

Regarding violating sanctities by burning the holy Quran, destroying mosques, and assaulting shrines, the Bahraini activist considered that this aims at dragging the Shiites into a sectarian conflict, which would reinforce the regime’s claims that the movement in Bahrain is a sectarian one.

Rajab said that the regime’s goal is to turn the conflict between the people and the ruling family into a Shiite-Sunni conflict.

“However, the people were aware of that, and responded to all the violations with flowers… they distributed flowers at their Sunni brothers’ mosques,” he said.

According to Rajab, the regime’s second goal is to prove that Bahrain did not exist before Al-Khalifa, and that Bahrain’s history began when Al-Khalifa family resided in Bahrain some 200 years ago.

“This is why they intended to attack the shrine of the significant figure (in reference to Imam Ali’s companion Sasa bin Sawhan), which proves that Bahrain has a history that exceeds 1000 years,” he pointed out.

Bahraini Activist Nabil Rajab: Why I Am Taking My Family to Pearl Roundabout

After attempting yesterday to march with a few hundred people to Freedom Square, only to be blocked by scores of riot police, today Nabeel Rajab decided to try another approach. He set out with only his immediate family -- his wife and two children, with a few supporters nearby -- to walk to Pearl (Lulu) Roundabout. Before the family had walked more than a few meters, they were attacked with tear gas. Listen as Nabeel explains what he is trying to accomplish with this simple walk.

I also ask you, since I don’t know what would happen to me today or tomorrow, not to surrender or let go of your rights. Don’t bargain with your rights, even if they put all your leaders behind bars. Even if we had to sacrifice more and put forth more martyrs, don’t relinquish your rights. We have conceded enough in the past, and the regime has enslaved us for too long. To this day, this regime is breaking into houses, stealing property, arresting women, beating the elderly and demolishing mosques. So we have to ask, what has this regime done 50 years ago, if it is doing this now in spite of the media and the whole world watching!? We have to admit, we were the reason that allowed the regime to commit these crimes until now. Even being from the Bin Rajab family, I have to say, we strengthened the regime in the past by allowing it to rule in this brutal way against its people and not standing up. Therefore, I ask you again, not knowing if I may ever be kidnapped, imprisoned or even killed, which I do not fear, to not ever surrender your rights for freedom of expression, against illegal detention,….
