Middle East Online::Ignoring Genocide: Rohingya People Deserve to Live

ASEAN must break away from its silence and tediously guarded policies and western countries must be confronted by their own civil societies: no normalization with Rangoon when innocent men, women and children are being burned alive in their own homes, writes Ramzy Baroud.

Middle East Online

One fails to understand the unperturbed attitude with which regional and international leaders and organizations are treating the unrelenting onslaught against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, formally known as Burma. Numbers speak of atrocities where every violent act is prelude to greater violence and ethnic cleansing. Yet, western governments’ normalization with the Myanmar regime continues unabated, regional leaders are as gutless as ever and even human rights organizations seem compelled by habitual urges to issue statements lacking meaningful, decisive and coordinated calls for action.

Whole Rohingya enclave burned to the ground: HRW

The 57-nation Organisation of Islamic Cooperation has condemned the newest attacks on Muslim Rohingyas in Burma as reports arrived that an entire Rohingya section in Kyauk Phyu – up to 811 homes – was burned to the ground.

OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu Photo: OIC

OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said in a statement that the violence during a period marking the end of Ramadan, the annual haj pilgrimage to Mecca, “is deplorable and a blatant violation of human rights.”

The US-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) said new satellite imagery showed “extensive destruction of homes and other property in a predominantly Rohingya Muslim area of the coastal town of Kyauk Phyu”—one of several areas where new deaths, injuries and destruction of property occurred, in the lastedst round of attacks which started last week. ...

Buddhist Terrorism - no longer a myth

Buddhist Terrorism - no longer a myth | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

"There is little doubt that the entire Buddhist population is playing its criminal role as active participants in this latest campaign to ethnically cleanse the Rohingya Muslims. In a report in August, the New York-based Human Rights Watch said it had found evidence of "state-sponsored persecution and discrimination" against the Rohingyas in the weeks after the violence. The latest announcement from Thein Sein’s office gives further credence to the government cover-ups and its evil plan....It is high time that the U.N. takes a serious look at what is going on inside Myanmar and stops the criminal regime and its partners for crimes against humanity. Silence of the UN on this matter would be a grave sin and is simply criminal." ....

The many faces of genocide - Rohingya

The many faces of genocide - Rohingya | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

...

The OIC must press for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the massacre, and indict and prosecute the Myanmar government responsible for the massacre of thousands of Rohingyas for violations of international criminal law based on the provisions stipulated under the Rome Statute of the ICC.

There is no denying that the ensuing killings of the Rohingyas are also a clear violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

It is sheer hypocrisy; that many countries go around claiming credit for trusting the Burmese and bringing them into the “modern democratic world”, or at least the Asean world, while at the same time totally ignoring a human rights travesty which should be referred to the ICC for adjudication – and especially Muslim-majority countries helping the Burmese while ignoring the deadly plight of their own Muslim so-called brothers and sisters within that same country.

No better example of hypocrisy could be found, and for this alone the members of the OIC, if they fail to act fast, should be defrocked and consigned to the garbage heap of accomplices to attempted genocide, if not traitors to the Muslim Ummah....

Genocide of Rohingya Muslims...

Genocide of Rohingya Muslims... | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

The utter silence on the brutal massacre of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar is raising many questions about the UN, western countries, NGOs and human rights organisations. Silence continues against such barbarous acts, and no proper voice has been raised till yet and no proper concern has been shown. The UN describes them as a persecuted religious minority in western Burma, and the Buddhists had never accepted them as the citizens of their country. ...

In the recent riots, about 30,000 Muslims had been killed; tens of thousands are missing and homeless, 5,000 women raped and properties set ablaze. The extremists had killed not only women and elderly people but also young children for no reasonable cause. As the Burmese Muslims are faced with one of the worst genocides, the media has kept a silence over such a catastrophic incident and has still not reported any news or released any footage about the ongoing genocide. It is inhuman on the part of human rights organisations across the world and shameful on the part of Muslim countries to ignore such brutality. We strongly urge the Muslim brotherhood to put their heads together and reach out to the drowning hands of our brothers.

It is just a matter of unity, which is easily within reach. Moreover, the electronic and print media of our country is strongly requested to highlight this main issue, as they can play a vital role in saving thousands of lives by being responsive to the lost voices of Rohingya Muslims that have been left unheard for a long time.

Obama urged to tackle human rights issues in Burma | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Washington-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Saturday urged US President Barack Obama to publicly address the deadly sectarian violence that continues in Rakhine State between Rakhine Buddhists and Rohingya (and non-Rohingya) Muslims.

“Obama should press Thein Sein to end discrimination and violence against the Rohingya and grant them citizenship on par with other ethnic nationalities,” said Brad Adams, HRW’s Asia director. “He should stress the urgent need to allow international aid to reach the Rohingya and for security conditions that would allow them to return to their homes.”....

Obama should also raise concerns about continuing abuses and unmet humanitarian needs in Burma’s Kachin State, where conflict continues between the Burmese army and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), the statement said. “The Burmese military has attacked villages and committed extrajudicial killings, forced labor, torture, rape, and pillage. Both sides have used anti-personnel landmines.”

Overnight and through Friday, the situation in Arakan State has shown little sign of improvement. On the contrary, it seems that the violence has now spread to other communities as well. A number of our sources have also commented that the recent escalation is due to the President’s office directly instructing army personnel to shoot on sight, those causing disturbances, Rakhine or Rohingya. This decision, with the reports that army personnel have actually shot, maimed and killed some Rakhine has led to huge upsurge of violence against the Rohingya by Rakhine locals.....

Hundreds of Rohingya Forced to Flee As New Wave of Attacks Hit Region | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Reports have been flooding in this afternoon of a new wave of attacks on Rohingya this afternoon leaving hundreds homeless and looking for shelter on foot during toreential monsoon rains whilst others were left dead. The recent clashes have been reported from 4 villages near Rauthedoung were as many as 12 have been killed with 1,000 Rohingya displaced as well as in 3 villages south of Maungdaw where 3 people have been killed this Thursday.

In the minutes leading up to sunset as many Rohingya were preparing to open their fasts (Ramadhan) hundreds of Rakhine activists armed with sticks, batons and other weaponry forced their way into Rohingya houses in three adjacent villages. As the villagers attempted to fight back against the Rakhine who had violated their homes, Lun Htin and Nasaka (Burmese armed forces and paramilatary) opened live rounds of fire on the villagers. Three men and one woman have been shot dead whilst many others have been injured. In total the three entire villages are being evacuated with the Rohingya unsure of where they are to move to next. Whilst one of the sources was describing the events , shooting and wailing could be herad in the background.

In a seperate incident, but most likely part of this new wave of violence, four villages near Rathedoung were attacked late last night, Wednesday, leaving more than 12 dead and over 1,000 Rohingya displaced...

Mediacide in Myanmar:: Militant Buddhism's toll on Rohingya Muslims

Mediacide in Myanmar:: Militant Buddhism's toll on Rohingya Muslims | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

It's Time We Ask, why is this being allowed in Burma?

(SALEM) - The Genocidal patterns of militant Buddhists are increasingly claiming large swaths of humanity, sweeping remains into unmarked mass graves. We're familiar with the term 'Democide' in reference to today's brand of western diplomacy; which involves smashing people like Afghans, Iraqis, Pakistanis, Libyans and Syrians to smithereens. Now we're confronted with Mediacide which war criminals love and embrace. They kill innocent people and the American 'news media' keeps its mouth shut, thus allowing the acts to take place; hence 'mediacide'.

Three years ago, it was Sri Lankan Tamil Hindus and Christians; 160,000 people were murdered and disappeared while the U.S. government, which knew what was taking place, tragically remained silent and only tried to resolve the crisis through diplomatic back channels with the Sri Lanka Sinhalese Buddhist government which miserably failed. We wouldn't even know that if it weren't for Wikileaks.

Now it is the Rohingya Muslim's turn to die at the hand of Buddhist religious extremists in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, a place of long simmering ethnic tension. ....

The plight of Rohingya Muslims

The plight of Rohingya Muslims | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

The recent upsurge in violence against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar has highlighted the regime’s complete disregard for basic human rights. While the international conscience awakens slowly, the Muslim minority has already suffered a colossal spell of ethnic cleansing. Accounting for over one-third of the total population of Myanmar, 800,000 Rohingyas are neither recognised as citizens, nor a minority. They came to Burma in the seventh century. They have ever since settled in the western part of the country, the Rakhine State; an area that borders the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh.
The latest spate of genocide has resulted in the killing of over 100 innocent people, including women and children. The main executors of these gruesome crimes were Hindu and Buddhist outfits, who otherwise portray themselves as pacifists. The Buddhist organisations that carried out these gory acts had the tacit blessing of the politico-military regime, as well as physical and logistic support of Hindu religious extremists. The horrific images and reports coming out of the conflict zone present a scenario of systemic genocide. The events were triggered by a Buddhist girl eloping with a Rohingya boy. In the wake of this innocent occurrence, the so-called peace-loving Buddhists have demonstrated that they could be as violent and gruesome as anyone else.
The UN Resolution 96(I) of 1946 states that genocide, whether committed in time of peace or war, is a crime under international law. In 2004, the then UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, announced his ‘Action Plan to Prevent Genocide’, whereby torturing, killing, inflicting physical pain and causing mental harm to any human being or group/community fall under the category of criminal acts punishable under international law. Gross violations of human rights are no longer an inclusive domain of a state. .....

While much of the blame for the discrimination of Burma’s ethnic Muslim Rohingya has been put on the government, questions are being asked as to why Muslim leaders in other countries in the region didn’t exert their influence on Burma's previous ruling military junta, under whose watch much of the abuses against the group allegedly occurred. ...

"Both the governments and Muslim groups have to bear responsibility for this—most governments, until only recently, have viewed human rights as taboo and [thought that] questioning Rohingya abuses would point to rights abuses occurring in their own countries," Haris said. ...

Concentration Camps and Systematic Rape - Rohingya Under Persecution

Concentration Camps and Systematic Rape - Rohingya Under Persecution | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

A joint group of Police, Lun-Htin (Security Forces), Sa-Ra-Pha (State Affairs Security) and local Rakhine thugs raided Maung Ni Village of Maung Daw, Arakan, Burma this morning during dawn raids whilst many were still sleeping. Arriving to the Rohingya majority village armed with weapons, almost every man from the village was rounded up and hurled onto four large trucks. Many resisted, unwilling to leave behind their wives and children and as such received heavy beatings by the local thugs and armed militia. A local man said ‘blood was dripping like rain all along the way from the trucks on which Rohingya men were taken away.’ The men have been taken to an unknown location and this is not the first such occasion of reports of men being taken away to concentration camps. According to the people in Arakan, the authorities have plans to do more such barbaric killings in other villages too.

In a separate incident, it was reported that 4 young women were taken away from their families by Rakhine thugs with their hair being shaved and virginity taken away by gang rape. This report still remains unverified, but we are receiving such news almost every few hours and the mere fact that it has been reported so often suggests that this is a problem which is endemic in Arakan right now.
