Iranian woman beats up cleric for criticizing her wardrobe

Iranian woman beats up cleric for criticizing her wardrobe | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

A cleric in Iran’s northern Semnan province claims he was beaten up by a woman after telling her to cover up. Hojatoleslam Ali Beheshti, a top religious figure in Shahrmirzad, told a passerby that she was “bad hijab” — a woman who is not fully in compliance with the country’s Islamic dress code.

She at first told Beheshti to look the other way, but he repeated his demand. Beheshti told the Iranian Mehr news agency that the woman then pushed him to the ground and began kicking him.

“From that point on, I don’t know what happened. I was just feeling the kicks of the woman who was beating me up and insulting me.”

He said he was hospitalized for three days after the incident, and the region’s prosecutor said he is “reviewing the case.”

Such incidents are not rare, Radio Free Liberty reports. Several other women have clashed with the country’s religious police, and Mehr names three other clerics who were “beaten up” by women they berated for their dress......

[ Any man who criticizes a woman's atire is playing with fire.......If she chooses to wear it, then it is BEAUTIFUL! .......Enough said.... ]

Egypt's Morsi denounces Syria regime, defying summit host Iran

Egypt's Morsi denounces Syria regime, defying summit host Iran | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

TEHRAN — Egypt's new president rankled his hosts but won plaudits elsewhere Thursday when he condemned the Iran-backed government of Syrian President Bashar Assad as an "oppressive regime," sparking a walkout by Assad government officials at a summit of nonaligned nations.

"We express our solidarity with the struggle of the Syrian people against an oppressive regime that has lost legitimacy," Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi told the assembled delegates at a conference hall in the Iranian capital. "It is not only an ethical duty but a political and strategic necessity."

Morsi's impassioned plea represented a diplomatic humiliation for Tehran, which had touted his presence as a diplomatic coup, the first visit by an Egyptian leader here since the Islamic Revolution overthrew the U.S.-backed Iranian shah in 1979.

But instead of toeing Tehran's line on the delicate issue of Syria or sidestepping the incendiary topic, Morsi acted like the guest who spoiled the party, making an emotional case for the ouster of Assad, Iran's closest Arab ally.

"The blood of the Syrian people is on our necks, and it will not stop unless there is an intervention by all of us," Morsi said while calling for a transition to a representative government in Syria, where the Assad family has ruled for more than 40 years. ...

Balochistan: Iranian security forces firing, one killed and four injured - Quetta

Balochistan: Iranian security forces firing, one killed and four injured - Quetta | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Iran’s Al-mersaad opened firing on Baloch protesters in Bogaan bazaar here on Wednesday. At least one man has been killed and four women critically injured.

According to details the Iranian Al-mersaad force has attempted to set up a check post in Bogaan Bazaar, a town in Iranian occupied Balochistan. The residents of the area objected saying that setting up of the check post will make life difficult for already oppressed people. The resident of the area gathered to register their protest but the Iranian security forces opened indiscriminate firing on them. Resultantly, one man was killed and four women have been wounded.

The deceased has been identified as Yaqoob S/O Shah Dad Baluch. The injured women have been shifted to Pahra (Iranshahr) hospital where their condition was stated to be critical.

It is pertinent to mention that Almersaad forces have similar powers like the FC (frontier corps) in Pakistan. They have been dispatched from Tehran; they operate under the direct supervision of Iran’s supreme leaders and consider themselves answerable to none. Local people say that they are the most brutal force that has made life miserable for innocent people. They have established check posts almost everywhere in Iranian occupied Balochistan and they often kill innocent Baloch without any reason.

Syrian Forces Push for Control of Damascus, Aleppo | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

...

In another development, Iranian state media reports say 48 Iranian nationals who were aboard a bus in Damascus have been kidnapped. Iran says efforts are under way to free the nationals, described as religious pilgrims.

In recent years, hundreds of thousands of Iranians have traveled to Syria to visit the Sayeda Zeinab mosque, a holy Shi'ite shrine in Damascus. Iranians have been targets for kidnap gangs several times since Syrian rebel groups began their mass uprising against President Bashar al-Assad more than 17 months ago.

Syrian rebels come mainly from the country's Sunni Muslim majority, while most Iranians practice Shi'ite Islam.

Sincere diplomatic dialogue has been recklessly abandoned and replaced with more economic sanctions and threats of war. As Dr. Martin Luther King so eloquently stated, "Today there is no longer a choice between violence and nonviolence. It is either nonviolence or nonexistence."

Please join me in demanding nonviolent solutions to conflict, and transparency and truth from governments and media. Help me share this message.

Arab public opinion: How is Iran being perceived by its immediate neighbours? | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

...

There have been several major polls on Arab public opinion. One of the most illuminating is the 2010 Brookings Institute poll, conducted in 6 countries across the Middle East. The Brookings Institute is a renowned think tank aimed at promoting democracy. When asked to identify the two nations posing the biggest threat to the Middle East, a majority of Arabs did not identify Iran; instead, 88% of respondents chose Israel, with the US as a close runner up with 77%. Only 10% of respondents chose Iran. Subsequently, when Arab respondents were asked how an Iran possessing nuclear weapons would impact the region some 57% responded that they would be “more positive” with an additional 20% responding that they would be indifferent. Finally, when asked about President Obama, 63% of the respondents answered that they were “discouraged” by his policies. Only 16% remained hopeful.

5 Political Prisoners In Ward 240 Of Evin Prison Solitary Confinement Launch A Hunger Strike

5 Political Prisoners In Ward 240 Of Evin Prison Solitary Confinement Launch A Hunger Strike | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

...

In Ward 350 of Evin prison all inmates are political prisoners, who are deprived of many of their legal rights, including use of telephone, issuance of furlough and regular family visits.

It has been more than two years that these prisoners have been banned from phone calls. A number of these prisoners were arrested after the 2009 presidential election and tried in sham trials. Most have not been allowed furlough and some have been allowed furlough for only days in the past three years.

Last week, families of 46 of these prisoners wrote a letter to the Public Prosecutor criticizing lawlessness and deprivation of the basic rights of prisoners. They wrote, “For our loved ones, we do not ask for anything beyond all the rights that other inmates have. Rights that were observed for the post-election political prisoners even in this Ward 350 before you took office as the Public Prosecutor.

Is this too much to ask for in a country that claims to implement Islamic justice?”

Free Jila Bani-Yaghoub | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
Immediate & Unconditional Release of Jila...

Prominent Iranian journalist Jila Bani-Yaghoub has begun her one-year jail term at Evin Prison.

The Kaleme opposition website reports that Ban-Yaghoub, a prominent Iranian journalist and women’s rights activist, returned to Evin Prison on Sunday September 2 to serve out a one-year sentence.

She was arrested in 2009 during the election protests against the controversial victory of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Ban-Yaghoub was arrested along with her husband, Bahman Ahmadi Amouyi, another journalist, who is currently in jail serving a five-year prison term.

In addition to her one-year jail term, Bani-Yaghoub has also been banned for 30 years from media activities for the charge of "propaganda against the Islamic Republic and insulting the president."

The Islamic Republic government has arrested and jailed many journalists in reaction to the 2009 protests.

Reporters Without Borders has been consistently speaking out against the treatment of journalists in Iran, and in its latest statement, the press-rights group reports that with 26 journalists and 18 netizens in jail, Iran only trails China as the biggest prison for journalists.

UN is a farce!: Iran elected to top post at UN Arms Trade Treaty conference

UN is a farce!: Iran elected to top post at UN Arms Trade Treaty conference | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

...“Right after a UN Security Council report found Iran guilty of illegally transferring guns and bombs to Syria, which is now murdering thousands of its own people, it defies logic, morality and common sense for the UN to now elect this same regime to a global post in the regulation of arms transfers,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, a non-governmental monitoring group based in Geneva.

"This is like choosing Bernie Madoff to police fraud on the stock market. And the U.N.'s scandalous choice of Iran is exactly why we fear that Syria's declared bid for a U.N. Human Rights Council seat is not impossible."

UN Watch called on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who addressed the conference on the same day as the election, to condemn the decision to give Iran a position of responsibility in regulating the arms trade.

"He should remind the conference that the Security Council has imposed four rounds of sanctions on Iran for refusing to halt its probited nuclear program, and that Iran continues to defy the international community through illegal arms shipments to the murderous Assad regime," said Neuer.

"Syria continues to be the central party to illicit Iranian arms transfers," the Security Council report recently found, citing the discovery of Iranian shipments to Damascus of assault rifles, machineguns, explosives, detonators, 60mm and 120mm mortal shells and other items. ...
