Attacking rocket installations is potentially defensive.  Attacking media outlets and journalists is an attempt to silence the truth.  If this was not an accidental strike, then Israeli forces could have pre-warned journalists to get out of there as the equipment would have been the real target.....

A Pause for Negotiations in the Israeli-Hamas Conflict | Stratfor

A Pause for Negotiations in the Israeli-Hamas Conflict | Stratfor | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

....

The Egyptians have been the most active in trying to secure a cease fire: Beyond sending their prime minister into Gaza on Nov. 16, as well as their intelligence chief and a group of security officials, Cairo then hosted a delegation of senior Hamas and Islamic Jihad members to further this goal. But while the Egyptians have a great interest in preventing an Israeli ground invasion of Gaza and are crucial to the Israeli imperative to prevent weapons smuggling via Gaza, there is little more they can do at present to mediate between the two sides.

If no one seems to want to serve as mediator, it is because there is such little room for negotiation. It is not ideology but strategy that locks each side into place. Hamas has come this far and does not want to give up what it has maneuvered for. Israel cannot allow Hamas a weapon that threatens the Israeli heartland. This situation is too serious for the parties to reach an agreement that ends the hostilities for now but in reality simply pushes back the issues to be addressed later. No one is eager to mediate a failure. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon has said he will go to Gaza in the coming week, but he will not be in a position to find middle ground.

Israel will not budge on this. Hamas could be compelled to relent under threat from its core financial supporters in the Arabian Peninsula, but these states, such as Qatar, are all far more concerned with the threat posed by Iran. The fact that these rockets likely originated with Iran ought to give them incentive to lean on Hamas. .....

Fatah and Hamas Have Destroyed Gaza

Fatah and Hamas Have Destroyed Gaza | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

...Mention can also be made of Walid Awad, a senior Gaza leader of the Palestinian People's Party (PPP), who accused Hamas of cowardly launching missiles against Israel. The leaders of Hamas, said Mr. Awad, "run away, and do not even have the courage to accept responsibility for their casualties. They treat Gazans like sheep for slaughter.

Above all, while in Israel, journalists are free to write anything they want without fear of being thrown in jail -- and presidents, prime ministers, and any figure in power can stand trial like any ordinary citizen; in Syria, the regime makes unrelentingly a butchery out of its own people; and in the disputed territories of Palestine, Fatah and Hamas keep putting off overdue elections -- showing scant regard for democratic values. Is this appalling contrast not the best proof....

A Soldier's Mother in Israel writes of the rockets from Gaza

A Soldier's Mother in Israel writes of the rockets from Gaza | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

...But 27 isn't an accurate number - apparently, that was in one city. Beersheva has canceled school for tomorrow - no, not a snow day; a rocket day! And the more accurate count was not 27, but 90! Other schools have been closed. Ben Gurion University has closed for tomorrow as well. ...

No, I don't want Israel to flatten Gaza but so long as they continue to fire rockets into Israel, I reserve my right to express my anger and blow off steam by dreaming of Israel - just once - doing what any other normal nation would do. Russia, China, England, France, Germany - even the United States...would flatten Gaza if they fired 140 rockets in 32 hours at them. Only Israel...always Israel.

[Violence as a means for creating political change is not effective, not conceeding your opponents right to exist can never lead to resolution of conflict. ... Violence forces defence, defence forces more violence....this is a spiral without end.  No one wins when everyone loses.  Who will be the first to stand on principle and stop this madness?!]

Israeli navy intercepts Gaza-bound boats.....Israeli pirates! | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The Israeli navy Friday boarded two boats carrying pro-Palestinian activists toward the Gaza Strip in a fresh challenge to Israel's blockade of the Islamist-controlled territory.

...

A U.N. report on Israel's interception of the 2010 Turkish ship said the blockade was a "legitimate security measure," adding "its implementation complied with the requirements of international law." Turkey has rejected that ruling.

Pro-Palestinian groups behind the latest attempt to reach Gaza by sea condemn the blockade as illegal and inhumane.

"We are going to keep sending boats until the immoral blockade of Gaza is lifted," Claudia Saba, a spokeswoman for the Irish Ship to Gaza group told Irish state broadcaster RTE.

Israel strikes media buildings in Gaza, expanding its range of targets

Israel strikes media buildings in Gaza, expanding its range of targets | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Military broadens its assault, striking Gaza buildings used by journalists and dimming hopes for a ceasefire. ....

The sites hit in Gaza early Sunday included buildings used by Britain’s Sky News channel and the Dubai-based pan-Arab broadcaster al-Arabiya, the news organizations reported. At least six journalists were wounded, according to a health ministry spokesman in Gaza quoted by wire services.

One of the buildings was used by al-Quds channel, which serves as a mouthpiece for Hamas, the militant group that rules Gaza. The Foreign Press Association in Israel issued a letter expressing concern and noting that a United Nations Security Council resolution says that journalists covering conflict civilians that must be protected.

The Cutting Edge News

The Cutting Edge News | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey threatened on September 8 to have Turkish warships escort aid ships travelling from his country to the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. Tensions in the eastern Mediterranean have been high due to the distinct chill in military and diplomatic relations between Israel and Turkey.
Turkey has denounced Israel’s blockade of Gaza ports and has demanded an apology for the deaths of Turkish nationals who were killed in 2010 onboard a pro-Palestinian flotilla by Israeli commandos. Erdogan also said that Turkey had taken steps to stop Israel from unilaterally exploiting natural resources from the eastern Mediterranean, according to Al Jazeera's translation of excerpts of an interview.

Israeli Airstrikes Kill 10 in Gaza

Israeli Airstrikes Kill 10 in Gaza | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
Palestinian sources say the number of casualties from the latest round of Israeli airstrikes in Gaza has risen to 10 dead and at least 20 wounded.

Pursuing the attackers, Israeli troops killed some of the assailants along Israel's border with Egypt's Sinai peninsula. Five Egyptian officers were also killed, sparking outrage and anti-Israel protests in Egypt.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered Thursday to hold a joint investigation with Egypt into the killing of the Egyptian officers. A statement issued by Netanyahu's national security adviser said military officials on both sides would set terms of the probe.

Egypt's military-backed government threatened to withdraw its ambassador to Israel to protest the killings. Egypt blamed the deaths on Israeli troops it said had violated the 1979 Israel-Egypt peace treaty.
