Muslim Council in Egypt Evicts 8 Christian Families, Seizes Their Property | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Speaking on US-based Christian TV channel Al-Karma, Magdy Khalil, head of the Middle East Freedom Forum, said that reconciliation meetings made up of Salafis and members of the Muslim Brotherhood, and arranged by security officials are illegal and forced eviction is one of the crimes under international law. "Who gave them the right to form a committee headed by a Salafi to sell Christian property? This is thuggery and blatant targeting of Copts."

AP Exclusive: Egypt’s ElBaradei says liberal youth behind uprising ‘decimated’ in election

AP Exclusive: Egypt’s ElBaradei says liberal youth behind uprising ‘decimated’ in election | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

CAIRO —“The youth feel let down. They don’t feel that any of the revolution’s goals have been achieved,” ElBaradei told The Associated Press in an interview on the same day electoral authorities announced that Islamist parties captured an overwhelming majority of votes in the first round of elections last week. “They got decimated,” he said, adding the youth failed to unify and form “one essential critical mass.”

The High Election Commission announced that the Islamic fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party garnered 36.6 percent of the 9.7 million valid ballots cast last week for party lists. The Nour Party, representing the more hard-line Salafi Islamists, captured 24.4 percent.

Egypt Protests: Fighting Rages In Tahrir Square

Egypt Protests: Fighting Rages In Tahrir Square | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

On Tuesday, Egypt's ruling military regime offered direct, limited concessions to their powers for the first time since street protests and clashes began anew here four days ago.

But as night fell, the tens of thousands of people who spent much of the day crammed in Tahrir Square -- chanting and dancing and, in some cases, engaging in brutal clashes with state security forces -- showed no signs of being placated by the military's offer.

Egypt: Free Mona Eltahawy ! | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Mona's arrest is yet another sign of how the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) is really just as bad as Mubarak or worse. Killing protesters, arresting them, torturing them. Mona has been very vocal in past months about SCAF's dictatorship. Her arrest will help raise more awareness about this bitter reality, while prostesters across Egypt are continuing their unfinished revolution.

» Egyptian Election Will Go Ahead, Military Confirms Newspaper – responsible coverage & positive news | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Egypt is split into 27 governorates and the polls will be split over three different dates. The first is on Monday, when Cairo and Alexandria will vote, and it will end on January 3. Some critics of Scaf have said that they are intended to confuse potential voters, excluding them from the democratic process.

Protesters believe that the election will be meaningless if the junta do not withdraw.

The two main parties running in the election are Muslim Brotherhood and the Free Egyptians, founded by Coptic Telecoms billionaire Naguib Sawiris.

Egypt’s Vote Propels Islamic Law Into Spotlight | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

The Muslim Brotherhood’s new clout is plunging it into an Islamist-against-Islamist debate over religion’s role in a promised democracy. ...

The unexpected electoral success of the Salafis — reported to have won about 25 percent of the votes in the first round of the elections, second only to the roughly 40 percent for the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party — is terrifying Egyptian liberals and troubling the West. But their new clout is also presenting a challenge to the Muslim Brotherhood, in part by plunging it into a polarizing Islamist-against-Islamist debate over the application of Islamic law in Egypt’s promised democracy, a debate the Brotherhood had worked hard to avoid.
