The move was strongly criticised by anti-monarchy group Republic, which accused the Prince of "hypocrisy".
...
A spokesman for Republic said: "This does smack of hypocrisy. He's raised the issue of human-rights abuses about the Chinese (in relation to Tibet) - to have this meeting shows his double standards. The Government may have its own reasons for maintaining diplomatic ties with Bahrain but that's no reason for the Royal Family to follow suit."

Unions in support of Bahrain freedom protesters!

Representatives of British trade unions have held a meeting with Bahrain's ambassador to the UK to register a joint protest over the treatment of workers and demonstrators in the Persian Gulf state.

“The delegation raised the matter of the thousands of people sacked and the hundreds facing trial or sentenced for supporting the pro-democracy movement in Bahrain,” the Trades Union Congress (TUC) said.

“Time for Regime Change in Bahrain”: London Seminar

“Time for Regime Change in Bahrain”: London Seminar | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - “The UK Foreign Office together with other countries are not robust in the condemnation of the human rights abuses committed by the al Khalifa regime,” says veteran British peer Lord Avebury.

...

“We need more robust condemnation from them,” he told a seminar at the British parliament entitled 'Bahrain; Time to support regime change and end occupation.'

He suggested that the UK government could at least call for the release of the political leaders in Bahrain and for the 3000 workers to be re-instated and compensated for lost income.

“Ultimately the people of Bahrain want to change their political system and we have to support them, not just for reform but for real transformation,” the 83-year old peer said.

He referred to NATO intervening in Libya in support of regime change to maintain stability and asked “what was the difference with Bahrain?”

“We can ask for Saudi Arabia to withdraw its forces so that Bahrainis enjoy peace and freedom,” Avebury further suggested.

Bahrain: halt the violence and release the prisoners

Parliament condemns the repression of citizens in Bahrain, which has led to dozens of deaths and injuries, and urges the immediate and unconditional release of all peaceful demonstrators, political activists, human rights defenders, doctors and paramedics, bloggers and journalists. It also expresses its solidarity with the families of all the victims.

The Bahraini security forces and authorities should stop violence, repression and detention of peaceful demonstrators and show the utmost restraint when attempting to control protests, say MEPs, who urge the authorities to act in strict accordance with their legislation and international obligations.

MEPs also reiterate their view that demonstrators in Bahrain have expressed their legitimate democratic aspirations and call on the government there to engage in a genuine, meaningful and constructive dialogue with the opposition, without further delay or additional preconditions, in order to bring about the necessary reforms, encourage national reconciliation and restore social consensus in the country.

What a hypocritical world we live in!

How can countries that market arms to tyrannical regimes pretend that they do not support human rights violations? What is even more two-faced is that they then get on their high horse and interfere militarily, or subtly, in other countries because of atrocities caused by weapons supplied by themselves?

I am so nauseated by politicians supporting and selling arms to dictators then turning all shocked and appalled when those weapons are used to ensure the tyrants retain their power.

Bahrain & Britain; Too close for comfort?-The Big Story-02-15-2012

http://www.presstv.com/Program/226977.html

When the Countess of Wessex and her husband, Prince Andrew embarked on a pre-Christmas trip to the Middle East, many were surprised Bahrain was on the itinerary.

After all, despite claims at reforms, the al-Khalifa dynasty in charge of the country was still overseeing a crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators.

With many imprisoned, injured or killed, the country had faced calls to enter into meaningful dialogue with protestors. It was, perhaps more surprising that the Countess of Wessex would accept jewellery from the Bahraini royal family estimated to be worth millions of dollars.

Now this has been exposed, instead of embarrassment and a quick return of the tainted goods - the Countess has held on to her new 'treasures'. Politicians and pro-democracy campaigners are urging the British Royal family to reconsider.

This is just another example of the continued cosy relationships between the Monarchy in Britain and dynasties across the Middle East, some with appalling human rights abuse records.

Downing Street said that Cameron "urged the king to deliver swiftly on the commitments he has made to implement the recommendations from the inquiry and to drive forward reform and reconciliation in the country, engaging with the opposition as part of that process". Britain is offering help with judicial reforms.

The opposition's key demand is for the release of prisoners and the reinstatement of people who were sacked after joining anti-government protests.

[Swiftly?!  The fact that the sacked are STILL sacked and that all Prisoners of Conscience are STILL imprisoned, is evidence of the Do-Nothing mindset of this fascist dictator!]
