Sentencing of 20 Medical Professionals in Bahrain

Sentencing of 20 Medical Professionals in Bahrain | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

We are deeply disturbed by the sentencing today of 20 medical professionals by the National Safety Court in Bahrain. We understand that the cases can be appealed and transferred to a civilian appellate court. We continue to urge the Bahraini Government to abide by its commitment to transparent judicial proceedings, including a fair trial, access to attorneys, and verdicts based on credible evidence conducted in full accordance with Bahraini law and Bahrain’s international legal obligations.

The Medical Staff were acquitted of the charges of stealing Medicines & tools from SMC (Salmaniya Medical Compound) And were also acquitted from the charge of
confiscation of Kalashnikov weapons and ammunition.

BUT The Medical Staff were convicted with the charge of "attempt to occupy SMC" despite the Director of The Emergency Department's denial of this in court and his  admission that he was in control of the sitiuation except for some skirmishes that ended in a friendly outcome.

The Director of the Emergency Department is an evidenciary witness presented by the Public Prosecution.  He said that there was no distinction in the treatment of  the patients.  Note: That He is a Sunni.

Dr.Nada Dahaif was not working in SMC and all witnesses assured that they never saw her in SMC, but still,  she was convicted in the attempt to occupy the SMC!?

Unjust treatment of Bahraini medics — Irish Medical Times

I am also familiar with the behaviour of those guilty of the crime. They rarely confess. They sometimes try to convince themselves and all around them that they didn’t do it. They blame others. They create confusion and misdirection. They attempt to obstruct justice. They deconstruct the facts. They have friends and family members and business partners who support them and resent and reject the accusations. But they remain guilty of a crime and the crime does not ‘blow over’.
...
To me, Bahrain is a ‘crime scene’. I’ve been there and I have seen those looks of defencelessness and vulnerability, terror and confusion in the faces of men and women who report being abused and tortured. And I’ve heard familiar excuses and explanations, misdirection and deconstruction.
The King of Bahrain has appointed a commission to investigate the abuses, yet his ministries deny the actions even took place. His business partners resent those who publicise what is going on, and his departments globally monitor and suppress all mention of it.

Exclusive: Bahraini nurses’ union leader calls for solidarity| | Socialist Worker

Rula al Saffar is the president of the nursing union in Bahrain, assistant professor at the college of health science and head of the emergency nursing programme.

She has just been sentenced to 15 years in prison – one of 20 medical workers, including doctors, nurses and paramedics, jailed this week in a military trial.

Their crime? Treating the injured during the demonstrations in February this year, which saw the Pearl Roundabout in the centre of Bahrain’s capital Manama occupied by protesters calling for democracy.

Rula spoke to Socialist Worker as she awaits the result of her appeal – and made a call for solidarity from health workers.

“We are all professionals, health workers and medics who helped people in a crisis,” she said.

“I believe we are being punished because we are witnesses to what happened here on 17 February. That was the day they started using live ammunition on people.”

Foreign Secretary concerned by sentences in Bahrain

Foreign Secretary concerned by sentences in Bahrain | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Foreign Secretary William Hague....

“These sentences appear disproportionate to the charges brought. These are worrying developments that could undermine the Bahraini Government’s moves towards dialogue and the reform needed for long-term stability in Bahrain.

“I call on the Bahraini judicial authorities to follow due process carefully and transparently, and to revoke the decision to impose the death penalty.

“Cases before the Special Tribunals should be transferred to regular civilian courts. This would help the Bahraini authorities demonstrate their commitment to upholding civil liberties, including the right to appeal and equal access to justice.”
