The Bahrain ‘Spring’: the revolution that wasn’t televised

The Bahrain ‘Spring’: the revolution that wasn’t televised | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

...As stated in the draft shadow report released by several Bahraini human rights organisations on the same day as the BICI report, not only does the opposition want to see those responsible for the torture and killing put on trial, but they also want to see accountability for ‘those who ordered and authorized such acts.’ The Bahrain Centre for Human Rights, one of the drafters of this report, says it has evidence of four members of the royal family ‘accused of personally torturing detainees,’ in addition to ‘the names of over 50 officers’ similarly partaking in torture. ....

Where is the compensation to the families of the martyrs, Hamad?

Nothing will anull the loss of this boys bother, but at least poverty, joblessness, lack of medical care and education are things YOU can address to atone for the murders your greedy regime has fostered!

You promised compensation according to the recomendations of the BICI report, where is it?  Where is the justice against the perpetrators of the systematic persecutions?

Letter on Bahrain to Secretay Clinton

As you noted recently, “mass arrests and brute force are at odds with the universal rights of Bahrain’s citizens and will not make legitimate calls for reform go away.” In order to restore public confidence and deliver on its promises to uphold human rights and accountability, the U.S. Government should urge the Government of Bahrain to:

Unconditionally release political prisoners and end torture, arbitrary detention, and incommunicado detention;

Protect Shi’a places of worship and religious buildings, rebuild destroyed mosques, and end systematic discrimination in political representation, government recruitment, employment, and naturalization policies;

Take measures to ensure the reinstatement of all workers and employees who were dismissed from their workplace for peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression, political opinion, and assembly;

Allow and fully cooperate with independent human rights organizations and observers, including U.N. bodies such as the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, to investigate claims of human rights abuses; Investigate and hold accountable all individuals who authorized, condoned, or committed human rights abuses, including the use of violence or torture against peaceful protesters and detainees

Release medical professionals and political prisoners who have been detained without charge or convicted and sentenced for political offenses; and

Allow access by local and international journalists to activists, protest sites, hospitals and other public institutions.

Bahrain opposition will not work with the illegitimate Khalifa regime!- Al Jazeera English | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa's only response to the report, so far, has been to establish a new commission entrusted with studying the previous commission's work. He announced the panel during a speech on Wednesday, and formally established it on Saturday via a royal decree.

The announcement was greeted with scorn by the opposition, which dismissed it as a stalling tactic.

Al Wefaq, which has normally been careful in its criticism of the government, refused to work with the commission unless Hamad first sacks his cabinet. He asked two members of the party to join the new commission, and both refused.

Signs at Friday's rally read "down down government" and "we want democracy" [Al Jazeera]
“We will not work or co-operate with the present government, and we demand for its resignation,” Khalil Marzooq, a senior member of Al Wefaq, said.

“This government must resign, because it’s proved now that it has killed and tortured our citizens.”

The king’s risky move - BICI

The king’s risky move - BICI | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

IT WAS both a humiliation and a triumph. Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa listened quietly as a litany of human-rights abuses committed by his security forces was read out. ...

In any event, the report may be too late to halt Bahrain’s downward spiral of sectarian enmity. Positions have become entrenched. In Shia villages on the outskirts of the capital, fighting erupts almost every day. Even if the government uses the report to initiate steps towards reconciliation and reform, it is not certain that opposition groups can rein in the protesters. Commissioning the report took a lot of nerve from the king. Acting on its recommendations will require even greater courage.

A Senate Intelligence Committee member says a recent report on Bahrain’s human rights abuses against protesters validates his opposition to a proposed $53 million arms sale to the island kingdom. ....

Mr. Wyden acknowledged the strategic importance of Bahrain, which hosts the Navy’s 5th fleet.

But he said he would not end his opposition to the arms sale until Bahrain’s government releases political prisoners, begins a dialogue on political reforms with the opposition, and holds public officials accountable.

Other senators - such as Joe Lieberman, Connecticut independent, and Marco Rubio, Florida Republican - have joined the congressional chorus calling for the Obama administration to condition the sale on political and human rights reforms.

Bahrain plays West at its own game

Bahrain plays West at its own game | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Will the BICI recommendations be adopted? Hardly. More likely there will be more of the welcoming lip-service we heard this week and then referral to committees and the appointment of working groups.
That is why there is no rush in Bahrain to release protesters from prison or to reinstate those who were sacked from their government jobs for having the temerity to protest peacefully.
The problem in Bahrain is the same as the problem in the rest of the region - people want their rights and, as in Syria, a religious majority refuses to be lorded over by a religious minority.
All this explains why the Middle East freedom glass is more half-empty than it is half-full
