Protecting the US-Bahraini relationship by Cole Bockenfeld - Common Ground News Service

Given the vital Bahraini-US relationship, the Obama Administration has the opportunity to play a role in moving national reconciliation forward. One change they could use this influence to affect is the withdrawal of Gulf Cooperation Council forces from Bahrain, a presence that emboldens hardliners within the Bahraini government. ...

Bahrain also has incentive to take constructive steps because it highly values its image in the international community as a Gulf country that is stable, modern and business-friendly. The government’s reaction to peaceful protests risks its rulers joining a club of regional autocrats bent on preserving power through repression. To preserve its reputation as a country of tolerance and prosperity, the Bahraini government could release its political prisoners, dropping politically motivated charges against them, under the rights afforded them by rule of law.

Along a similar vein, Bahraini security forces could allow peaceful political protests, and the government could call for a process for meaningful accountability of Bahraini security forces involved in the arrest, torture, unlawful detention and deaths of prisoners of conscience. Accountability is a critical building block to restore protesters’ trust in the sincerity of the government’s devotion to reform, and allowing non-violent protests creates a peaceful channel for Bahrainis to express their demands.....

Bahrain opposition demands elected government

Bahrain opposition demands elected government | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

http://www.middle-east-online.com/english/?id=48514

DUBAI - Bahraini opposition groups called in a new declaration on Wednesday for an elected government and for ending ‘discrimination’ against Shiites in order to break the political stalemate.

...

Basic demands:

1) an elected government “representing will of the people rather than an appointed government” ;

2) “Fair electoral districts guaranteeing political equality amongst the people and meeting the universal principle of one person, one vote”;

3) “A parliament comprising of a single chamber having sole legislative and regulatory powers, replacing the current bi-cameral arrangement, one elected and the other appointed” ;

4) an independent Judiciary “both financially and adminstratively”;

5) “Security for all via… [the] formation of the army and other security apparatus on the basis of providing security for all, and trained to show respect for human rights at all times, rather than serving wishes of the government in suppressing the opposition.”

The document was signed not only by Al-Wefaq, but also by four other political parties including: National Democratic Action Society (Waad), Nationalist Democratic Assembly, National Democratic Assemblage and the Al-Ekha National Society.

Bahrain's military tribunal has sentenced dozens of protesters to up to 25 years in jail for taking part in anti-regime demonstrations.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Rodney Shakespeare, head of the Committee against Torture in Bahrain, to shed more light on the atrocities committed by Saudi-backed forces against Bahraini protesters.

The video offers the opinions of two additional guests, Nabeel Rajab, president of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights in Manama and Daoud Khairallah professor of law at Georgetown University.

The Defense Department notified Congress on September 14 of a plan to sell equipment including 44 Humvees, more than 50 bunker-buster missiles and night-vision technology for the army of the island nation.

[Bahrain has NO need for these weapons!  They could have no military at all and be totally protected by the GCC.  They are a repressive regime and may very well use these weapons against their own people.  I don't believe Khalifas can be trusted with weapons as dangerous as the common soup-spoon, let alone, missiles or armored HUMV's]

Saudi Arabia helps crush the democratic uprising in Bahrain

Saudi Arabia helps crush the democratic uprising in Bahrain | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

"Instead of rights, every family got a political prisoner," said Nabeel Rajab, president of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights. "After almost three months of military rule, the crisis has deepened because every family suffered when the army was sent in to solve a political problem."

Hundreds of protesters and professionals such as doctors, nurses, lawyers, and even soccer players have been arrested and tried in a special security court. Official use of torture has become widespread. According to Rajab, up to 98% of the people detained by state security forces were abused. "No one was immune," said Rajab. "Very rarely will you find someone who was arrested but not abused."

Particularly reprehensible have been the security forces’ attacks on doctors and nurses for treating protesters injured by the army and security forces. A recent report issued by Human Rights Watch details “attacks on health care providers; denial of medical access to protesters injured by security forces; the siege of hospitals and health centers; and the detention, ill-treatment, torture, and prosecution of medics and patients with protest-related injuries.”

“The attacks on medics and wounded protesters,” says Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch, "have been part of an official policy of retribution against Bahrainis who supported pro-democracy protests. Medical personnel who criticized the severe repression were singled out and jailed."

Twenty-three doctors and 24 nurses who treated protesters were charged with treason. The BBC reported that these medical personnel were tortured into making false confessions, according to their families. On March 16, after the Saudi invasion, security forces occupied Salmaniya, Bahrain’s main public hospital. One ward of the hospital located on the sixth floor was turned into “a makeshift detention facility where security forces subjected patients to incommunicado detention, regular beatings, torture, and other forms of mistreatment,” witnesses informed Human Rights Watch.

Red Scare in Pearl Square - By Brian Dooley

Red Scare in Pearl Square - By Brian Dooley | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Exploiting real concerns about Iran's influence in the region, Bahrain's government insists that a conspiracy led by Iran and its proxy, the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah, is behind Bahraini citizens' calls for reform -- a claim that echoes South African President P.W. Botha's apartheid government's claim that democracy activists in his country were coordinated by Peking or Moscow. In that case, officials pointed to Pravda's delight at carrying reports of unrest in the country as proof of their conspiracy theory, just as Bahraini rulers now cite the Iranian-funded Press TV's coverage of the democracy protests as evidence of a conspiracy with the democracy activists.

Some U.S. officials now say that Iran might not have instigated the pro-democracy demonstrations in Bahrain, but it's waiting for an opportunity to exploit them. That sounds eerily and depressingly like what used to pass, 26 years ago, as sophisticated analysis about the relationship between South African democracy activists and the Soviet Union.

WASHINGTON — US President Barack Obama's pick for ambassador to Bahrain urged the kingdom Wednesday to avoid "repression" and instead respond to unrest "through genuine reform and reconciliation."
"Political reform and respect for human rights are vital to Bahrain's stability and to the protection of US interests in the region," Thomas Krajeski told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee at a confirmation hearing.
"Bahrain's long-term stability depends on addressing domestic grievances not through repression, but through genuine reform and reconciliation."
