'Peaceful, Peaceful!'

I do not speak, read, or write Arabic.  I am American and monolingual, (linguistically ignorant) .

But, I understand 'Silmiya'  when I hear it in videos from the MENA region.  How is it that these mercenaries in Bahrain cannot comprehend?!  Or, maybe they are just doing what their masters, the al-khalifas, dictate!    Muderous al-khalifas!

The Arab Awakening: A Bahraini activist struggles to keep protests alive | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

But as civil unrest grew in the Arab Spring, and as the kingdom’s neighbours in the Middle East and North Africa saw their strong-arm leaders toppled, Mr. Rajab learned the harsh extent of King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa’s displeasure.

“My house is attacked regularly. They punish me for talking. They beat me — they kidnap me from my home to beat me for a few hours. It has become common,” he said dryly in a telephone interview.

“It is part of my life routine, now. I would barely notice it if my staff didn’t tell me.”

...

Protests saw the highest participation rate. With a population of about one million citizens, its largest demonstration in the capital, Manama, drew about 200,000 people — 25% of all adults.

[Recipe for success:  Take Charismatic leaders, add a liberal portion of large public following.  Mix well.  Apply to protest nurtured into categorical nonviolence, and civil disobedience.  Allow to stand.  Voila!  Free Bahrain!   .....  Timeline may be exaggerated...]

Sectarianism, Opposition Parties, and Online Activism in Bahrain: An Interview with Blogger Chan'ad Bahraini

Sectarianism, Opposition Parties, and Online Activism in Bahrain: An Interview with Blogger Chan'ad Bahraini | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

MK: So you suggest that unity is the only way to achieve these demands?

FD: This is, in my eyes, where the opposition needs to work the hardest. The most important site for cross-sectarian cooperation is in the workplace and the labor movement. It was the labor movement that was the focus of the nationalist opposition movement in the 1950s and I believe this is what the opposition should focus on strengthening. This will of course be extremely difficult to do, given how severely the regime has cracked down on the trade union movement since February. Nonetheless, I cannot see it happening any other way. This strengthening of the labor movement will of course necessarily require building solidarity with migrant workers also, who have been largely ignored up until now.

Former Bahraini MP Sheikh Mohammed Khalid publicly called for the killing of protesters via Twitter on Monday, lambasting them as “traitors.”

...

“If you see a traitor crossing the road, you must run them over and keep going because you are in a country where the law allows you to strike and crush them,” Khalid tweeted.

Bahrain human rights groups, declaring in a report last November, said that "Bahrain committed violations of various international human rights treaties which it has signed and ratified."

The report documented 45 killings, 1500 cases of arbitrary arrest, and 1866 cases of torture, amongst other figures.

A government-established commission found authorities used systematic torture against detainees, ...

New tactics, new methods, new victories! | Democracy movement in Bahrain moves towards final victory! | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

... During my time in Bahrain, I met Zainab Al-Khawaja (@angryarabiya).

In my time with her, I grew to respect and admire her world view and strength. ... Al-Khawaja was always clear on one thing: she believes in peaceful protests, and she was not alone in this.

As with her past interactions with security forces, Al-Khawaja used peaceful tactics today to express her views, just like she always has. To be arrested for demonstrating peacefully does not signal turning over a new leaf, as the Bahraini government says that it aims to do.

Many are quick to cite the examples of oil spills, molotov cocktails or road blocks as reasons to discredit protesters or members of the opposition. While I was in Bahrain, I attended a demonstration prior to security forces arriving, and it was peaceful. However, at a separate demonstration in Sitra, I did see molotov cocktails being thrown at security forces, much like New York Times journalist Nicholas Kristof did this past week. While such tactics are worrisome, and human rights organisations in Bahrain have been quick to condemn their usage, ....

[Leaders are showing a new path, take time to see it, and learn its power!  The Al-Khawaja's know best and would do nothing to endanger Bahrain or their loved ones languishing in cages.   Peaceful Civil Disobedience is the path to a free Bahrain!  NO ACTION CAN BE ENGAGED THAT THE REGIME MAY CONSTRUE AS VIOLENT!   This makes the true aggressor, the true repressor obvious]

U.S. Has Few Options to Curb Crackdown in Bahrain

U.S. Has Few Options to Curb Crackdown in Bahrain | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Though the Persian Gulf island nation is a close U.S. ally and the host of its Fifth Fleet, there's not much that American pressure or diplomacy could do that it isn't already.

[Really! 1. Economic sanctions against the regime until it reinstates the Constitution.

2. No arms , and no arms to its big brother, Saudi Arabia until democratic reforms are enacted.

3. Pull the 5th fleet out of Bahrain and site HR abuses as the cause.

4. Support the democracy protesters, openly and behind the scenes.

5. Support reformists in Iran so as to destabilize Iran's government and cause it to involve itself with domestic issues and not colonizing the gulf.  Thus, affording Saudi Arabia enough security to allow Democracy in Bahrain.

6.Take the Human Rights issues and torture evidence to the UN and ICC and seek international action.

7. Try implementing a US foreign policy grounded in something other than empty rhetoric , ie real tangible action!

8. Forced disappearances, illegal detainments, civilian trials in military courts, and all prisoners of conscience being discussed with the regime at any/all venues public, private, and international.

....etc, etc, etc..... ]

Civil Resistance in Bahrain: Current Political and Communication Challenges

Civil Resistance in Bahrain: Current Political and Communication Challenges | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

In this webinar Bahraini journalist Nada Alwadi discusses the ongoing civil resistance movement in Bahrain (a small island monarchy in the Persian Gulf) which has been a part of the recent wave of popular revolts in the Middle East known as the Arab Spring. She revisits the timeline of events in Bahrain beginning in February 2011, when state repression of marches and protests around the country motivated the population to sustain their civil resistance mobilization and call for political reform. She also examines the role of U.S.-backed Saudi Arabia, which sent troops to help shore up the Bahraini monarchy and suppress the popular uprising. Alwadi sheds light on the media blackout in Bahrain, and the current political and communication challenges facing the country and its society in the wake of a brutal state crackdown on protesters, the media, hospital staff, and ordinary members of the movement. She also relates the untold story of a struggle which has been forgotten and abandoned by the world and received little coverage from international media outlets. Finally, Alwadi discusses the importance of civil resistance in Bahrain and its larger role in building a new, freer Middle East.
