U.S. Base In Bahrain In Danger

U.S. Base In Bahrain In Danger | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

The United States is quietly looking for another country, on the west coast of the Persian Gulf, to host an American naval base. This is because months of political unrest in Bahrain has put the American base there in danger. So the U.S. Navy is looking at the possibility, and cost, of moving the Bahrain base to Dubai or Qatar. The navy is not happy about making the move, as it would be expensive and disruptive. But if the unrest in Bahrain continues, and escalates, there may be no choice.

Continuous , amplified protesting until America leaves the Base.  Then you have a new ally against the regime.  America will be free of its Khalifa dependency and can influence/demand human rights and reforms!

Emir makes himself king of 'democratic' Bahrain

Emir makes himself king of 'democratic' Bahrain | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Bahrain has been ruled by the al-Khalifa family, which adheres to the Sunni branch of Islam, since 1783. The present Emir came to power in 1999 on the death of his father, a despotic ruler who ruled over one of the most repressive regimes in the region. In the Nineties he made a brutal crackdown on a campaign against discrimination by Shia Muslims, the underclass majority in Bahrain.

In the 18 months of Sheikh Hamad's rule he has freed political prisoners, dismantled the hated state security police, invited exiled dissidents – many in Britain since the Seventies – to return to form opposition parties, and appointed women to a consultative shura

20 yrears of promises unkept proves the Al-Khalifa monarchy to be nothing more than LIES!

Bahrain: From a new awakening to a divided nation

Bahrain: From a new awakening to a divided nation | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
The simple explanation for the human disaster that is consuming Bahraini society is that the government over-reacted. The Khalifas felt their rule was under threat as long-established despots across the Arab world were overthrown. They treated moderate reformers as if they were professional revolutionaries. Without any evidence, the authorities demonised Iran as the hidden hand behind the demand by the Shia for an end to discrimination. "The Sunni community here was told that it faced an existential threat and equal citizenship for Shia meant an end to the Sunni," one Shia political activist says. They believed it.
Bahrain has always been divided between the Sunni ruling élite, centred on the Khalifa royal family, and the Shia, but since March this has turned into something closer to an anti-Shia pogrom. Evidence of official sectarianism is widespread. After watching the beginning of a riot in Nuwaidrat we drove to a quieter part of the village where 10 Shia mosques had been destroyed three months earlier. A local man, who is writing a history of Shia mosques and holy sites in the neighbourhood and does not want his name published, points to a heap of rubble saying "this used to be the Momin mosque where 200 to 300 people worshipped. There has been a mosque here for 400 years".

Maryam Al-Khawaja, the 24-year-old director of foreign relations for the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, is one of the few Bahrani activists speaking about the uprising outside the borders of the tiny, oil-rich island nation.
..." The regime is going to try and play a very smart game-- cracking down as severely as possible, and then suddenly making very artificial progress, which is what they’re doing right now by releasing a few prisoners, stopping the torture, allowing family visitations. But the youth are not buying into it this time. They remember what happened in 2001 – it’s not that long ago. They say, ‘You know what? Even if you’re going to make these artificial changes, we’re still going to protest and demand our rights.’

Bahrain cleric to rulers: Reform or risk ouster

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) — Bahrain's most senior Shiite cleric warned the Gulf kingdom's rulers Friday to either ease their grip on power or risk joining Libya's Moammar Gadhafi and other Arab leaders swept aside by uprisings.
The sermon by Sheik Isa Qassim was attended by thousands of worshippers, and was a show of defiance after Bahrain's justice minister accused the cleric of promoting unrest in the strategic island nation ...
Some worshippers unfurled banners saying "We will never submit to anyone but God" and warning that government pressure on Qassim is "political suicide."
Qassim vowed he would never be silenced, and said it was his religious duty to support demands by Bahrain's majority Shiites for greater rights and a stronger voice in how the country is run.
...
"Can't they learn from the fall of dictatorships and see what happens to those who denied their people basic rights?" Qassim told worshippers. "We now see what happens to the Libyan dictator, just as what happened to Tunisian and Egyptian despots."

The obvious bias in Western and GCC media's reporting about the situation in Syria as compared to language used in reporting parallel events in their own countries has prompted Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Naqdi, Commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's Basij Forces, to declare his organization's readiness to deploy peacekeeping forces to London, Liverpool and Birmingham should the unrest in Great Britain drag on.

Bahrain protests: 'The repression is getting worse'

Bahrain protests: 'The repression is getting worse' | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Sheikh Ali Salman, al-Wifaq's leader, prefers to talk of universal rights. "What Bahrainis want is the same as people elsewhere in the Arab world," he said. "The government succeeded to some extent in portraying what happened here as a Shia-Sunni clash, though it was less successful in convincing anyone that there was Iranian involvement. It also tried to show that the opposition were terrorists. But there is one basic conflict – between those who support democracy and those who want to maintain the current dictatorship."
