Bahrain: Reports of Military Personnel Tortured, Imprisoned, and Killed by Regime · Global Voices

Bahrain: Reports of Military Personnel Tortured, Imprisoned, and Killed by Regime · Global Voices | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
Bahraini Twitter users joined hands to draw attention to the cases of scores of military personnel - soldiers and policemen - detained, tortured and said to be killed by the regime, since pro-democracy protests started in the country on February 14.

Release our activists, release our students, release our medics, release our women, release our teachers, and now release our military personnel. All of these are Twitter campaigns that Bahraini netizens have been pushing for to create awareness about the different segments targeted by the Bahraini regime since protests started on February 14.

Activists say there are scores of military and police personnel who have been arrested and trialed in military courts during the unrest for refusing to shoot protesters, sending text messages, attending funerals, protesting, or just for being members of the Shia'a sect. The sentences they have received vary between 1-12 years.

Bahrain Center for human rights (BCHR) came to know that fourteen activists and political figures –currently imprisoned in Qurain Military Prison as a result of protests since Feb 14th, 2011 –have decided to instruct their lawyers to raise their cases to the Court of Cassation, after the military appeals court upheld the sentences of up to life imprisonment, on charges — according to the military prosecution —" incitement against the regime, attempt to bring down the Regime".

Bahrain's military tribunal has sentenced dozens of protesters to up to 25 years in jail for taking part in anti-regime demonstrations.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Rodney Shakespeare, head of the Committee against Torture in Bahrain, to shed more light on the atrocities committed by Saudi-backed forces against Bahraini protesters.

The video offers the opinions of two additional guests, Nabeel Rajab, president of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights in Manama and Daoud Khairallah professor of law at Georgetown University.

Military Trial Verdicts Expose Bahrain’s Lack of Interest in Reform | Human Rights First

Military Trial Verdicts Expose Bahrain’s Lack of Interest in Reform | Human Rights First | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Washington, DC – Human Rights First today condemned the harsh prison sentences confirmed by Bahrain’s military court for 21 prominent dissidents. The group said the sentences expose the government’s flawed legal process and its lack of interest in reform.
“Some of the men have credible evidence that they were tortured in custody, but they were not allowed to raise that evidence during their trial, which fell well short of any legitimate legal standard,” said Human Rights First’s Brian Dooley.
According to Dooley, eight of the 21 dissidents had life sentences confirmed in today’s appeal. Among those before the military court today were human rights activist Abdulhadi Al Khawaja and political leader Hassan Mushaima. The original June 2011 prison sentences – ranging from two years to life in prison – for the other 19 on trial were also confirmed at today’s hearing.

Waad speaks out in favor of Bahraini Women's Rights!

Waad’s Women’s Affairs Office Condemns Unjustified Violence Against Female Protesters

Women’s Affairs Office at The National Democratic Action "Waad" expresses its deep concern regarding the excessive use of force against peaceful demonstrators yesterday and today as well as arbitrary arrests exercised against women in specific. The Office demands the immediate release of all detainees in the rallies that began from Bahrain’s villages demanding democracy and human justice.

The decision made by the prosecutor to imprison 38 women for 45 days and 7 girls (minors) for 3 days pending investigation, is a violation of all norms and human rights that give every citizen the right to express their opinion through peaceful means. The Women’s Affairs Office also condemns the unnecessarily repressive and violent approach that was adopted by the Ministry of Interior against the protestors during their arrest, treating them like criminals and publishing their photos in the official media in flagrant violation of human rights enshrined in the Constitution and all international conventions on Human Rights, which affirm that a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Insisting on using security and force in addressing political and constitutional issues instead of serious dialogue as demanded by political opposition, will cause the country more political and sectarian tension, ultimately leading into a complex and dangerous phase that will be difficult to solve.

The state of law and institutions should apply the law on everyone without any discrimination. Moreover, the Constitution, the National Action Charter and all international charters grant citizens the right to express their opinions in all peaceful means. These charters impose the protection of demonstrators, as opposed to confronting them with excessive violence, collective punishment, tear gas, sound bombs, live bullets and internationally-forbidden shotgun bullets.
