Some freed Bahrain detainees to be tried - former MP | World | Reuters | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

DUBAI (Reuters) - Bahrain has released more than 100 detainees who had been facing military trials over their roles in anti-government protests earlier this year, but some of them will still be prosecuted...

Sounds like the sentences have been served before charges, trial, or convictions!  Double indemnity.....

Bahraini detainees allege torture - UPI.com

He said security forces didn't torture detainees so much as to get information as to "send a message" that they have a "green light" to do whatever they want.

Bahrain Center for Human Rights President Nabeel Rajab was quoted as saying as many as 98 percent of those held by state security forces were abused in some fashion.

"No one was immune," said Rajab. "Very rarely will you find someone who was not abused."

Freedom House: Ongoing Abuses in Bahrain Delegitimize Upcoming National Dialogue | Bahrain Center for Human Rights | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
“By continuing to proceed with hasty prosecutions in military courts of leading opposition political figures and pro-democracy activists, the Bahraini government is in effect removing its political competition,” said Charles Dunne, Freedom House’s senior program manager for the Middle East and North Africa. “These actions strongly suggest that the National Dialogue will not be an opportunity to advance political freedom in Bahrain, but rather a ploy to prevent criticism of its human rights record.” -- PROPHETIC!

Bahrain activists jailed following 'politically motivated' trials | Amnesty International

Bahrain activists jailed following 'politically motivated' trials | Amnesty International | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
The trials of 15 activists convicted over their involvement in pro-reform protests in Bahrain that began in February, were politically motivated and unfair, Amnesty International said today.

A military court in Bahrain’s capital city Manama has over the last few days sentenced the 15 activists, in two separate cases, to between one and four years imprisonment for “participating in illegal demonstrations and inciting hatred against the regime” during popular protests in February and March.

One of the activists, Fadhila Mubarak Ahmad, is the first woman protester to be convicted as a result of the recent unrest in Bahrain. She was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment.

“These trials and convictions represent yet further evidence of the extent to which the rights to freedom of speech and assembly are now being denied in Bahrain,” said Malcolm Smart, Amnesty International’s director for Middle East and North Africa.

Beyond Bahrain's Dialogue

Beyond Bahrain's Dialogue | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
In addition, the forum has been constructed in such a way as to make the opposition a small minority. Representatives of seven legally recognized opposition political societies, including Wefaq, were allocated only 35 out of the 300 seats at the forum. The rest went to NGOs, professional associations and trade unions (which have been purged of protestors and people who went on strike), as well as representatives of the media (which routinely self-censors and avoids criticizing the government), and "prominent personalities." There are no representatives of the youth protestors, many of whom are now in prison. Overall, the forum is even less politically representative than the country's parliament, and has even fewer powers to implement any of its decisions.

A special report on the torture and human rights violations against the detainees in the case of "Alliance for the Republic" | Bahrain Center for Human Rights | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
The military court in Bahrain issued harsh sentences against 21 opposition leaders and figures, including Abdul Hadi Al Khawajah, the prominent human rights activist.
The lack of international standards for trials and having civilians tried before a military court are blatant violations of their rights and a sign of the invalidity of the sentences issued.
Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) considers the detainees prisoners of conscience with no material evidence of their involvement in violence or the incitement of violence. The BCHR condemns their torture during interrogation and trial.
