Jalila al-Salman ’s and Mahdi ‘Issa Mahdi Abu Dheeb ’s appeal hearing continued on 11 December 2011. ‘Civilians should never be tried before military courts’ - Malcolm Smart

The Bahraini authorities’ decision to try two prominent women activists in a military court is a backward step and raises concerns that they will not receive a fair trial, Amnesty International said today.

Roula al-Saffar, head of the Bahrain Nursing Society, and Jalila al-Salman, vice-president of the Bahrain Teachers' Association, have been released on bail after being detained for several months for their involvement in pro-reform protests.

Roula al-Saffar will be tried next Sunday together with 13 other medical workers before the National Safety Court, a military court, although she and Jalila al-Salman, who will be tried by the same court the following day, are both civilians.

Female Teacher on Hunger Strike in Bahrain Hospitalized | Human Rights First | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

In July, Human Rights First profiled Jalila al-Salman, a Bahraini teacher who has been detained since March for her alleged role in coordinating a teachers’ strike. We are very concerned to hear from local human rights defenders that Jalila was hospitalized today for chest pains following 10 days on hunger strike. Among the handful of women still in detention in Bahrain, Jalila and fellow prisoner, Roula Al Saffar, the Head of the Bahrain Nursing Society, have undergone a joint hunger strike to protest their continued detention and ill treatment. There are reports that Jalila has been severely tortured.

In addition to opposition members, human rights defenders, peaceful protesters, students and athletes, the Bahraini government is cracking down on its teachers. Teachers like Jalila al-Salman who was arrested in March for her alleged role in coordinating a teachers’ strike following the February and March protests that called for government reform. Over 40 security officers raided Jalila’s home in late March and arrested her in front of her three children. Jalila is still locked up, and her family claims she has been tortured. In a worrying turn of events, the Manama Lower Criminal Court indirectly increased the pressure on Abu Dheeb and Al Salman through a ruling in a related case.

On 26 March, the court acquitted seven Bahraini teachers, members of the BTA, of all charges. They had been charged with undermining national stability by organising sit-ins outside schools during last year’s protests.

Front Line believes all charges against health professionals who have been targeted because of their work for human rights should be dropped, he said.

Senator Averil Power (FF) travelled to Bahrain with Front Line to protest against the imprisonment of the medics including Dr Ali Al Ekr, Dr Basim Dhaif and Dr Ghassan Dhaif, who trained at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin. “I welcome the news that Dr Rula Al Saffar and Jalila al Salman have now been released. However, 10 medics remain in custody and another has been transferred to hospital after suffering a ruptured brain aneurism. Our delegation will continue to campaign for their release,” she said.
