Abdulhadi AlKhawaja : Bahraini Prisoner of Conscience tortured! | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

The independent report, which was commissioned by the Bahraini government, outlined how al-Khawaja had been hit, kicked, thrown down stairs, had his jaw broken, and sexually abused while in prison.
Al-Khawaja has previously worked for Amnesty International which has since called on the Danish government to push for his release.

“We now have it in black and white that the Danish citizen Abdulhadi al-Khawaja has been subjected to torture, sexual abuse, violence and degrading treatment,” Lars Normann Jørgensen, the general secretary of Amnesty International Denmark, told Berlingske newspaper.

“The Danish government needs to use every diplomatic opportunity to overturn al-Khawaja’s life sentence and have him unconditionally released,” Jørgensen said. “He is the definition of a political prisoner who has been tortured and sentenced simply because of his peaceful fight for reforms and human rights.”

Bahrain - Adam Shapiro finally gets to Meet jailed HRD Abdulhadi Al Khawaja | Front Line | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

I finished the day by going to another village, Aker Sharqiya, to observe a protest march. The villagers had asked for human rights organisations to come, knowing that we were here, in part, because of the Bassiouni report. The plan was for the entire march to be in the interior of the village so as to avoid provoking the riot police from attacking. Walking through the village, after the protest, Zainab came up and showed me a rendering of her father’s face on a wall. On another wall in the village it had been painted over by riot police, but this was relatively new. The man I had earlier seen for minutes during his prison visiting time, who has 18 metal plates and 26 screws holding his jaw and face together as a result of the beating and torture he was subjected to, was staring at me from the wall in this poor village with a helicopter buzzing overhead, watching, monitoring.

More detainees join Bahrain hunger strike - Middle East - Al Jazeera English

More detainees join Bahrain hunger strike - Middle East - Al Jazeera English | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

A rights group in Bahrain says more detainees are joining a hunger strike to protest ongoing trials from the crackdown on demonstrations for greater rights by the Gulf nation's Shia majority.
A statement on Saturday by the Bahrain Center for Human Rights said the strike now includes nearly 20 doctors who are jailed and face anti-state charges linked to the protests against Bahrain's ruling Sunni dynasty.

The rights group said at least two other prominent activists, Abdul Jalil al-Singace and Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, have also begun hunger strikes in solidarity. The activists were sentenced to life in prison in June.
Nabeel Rajab, a spokesman for the group, told Al Jazeera the detainees are insisting that a trial, if any, should take place in a civil court not a military tribunal.

The trials are scheduled to resume on Wednesday.
Rajab said because little change has come into effect despite promises of reform from the government, there are now renewed protests in the prisons and in the streets.

Zainab al-Khawaja says her father, Abdulhadi, and al-Singace, opposition Haq movement member, stopped eating on Tuesday in solidarity with detainees held at Bahrain's Dry Dock prison.
