AlKhawaja - : Bahrain human rights defender should be released immediately: | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Amnesty International (AI) on Friday urged the Bahraini government to release Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, who was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment last year by a military court, so that he does not die as a result of his 50 day hunger strike. Al-Khawaja, a Danish citizen, former protection coordinator with Front Line Defenders  and leading Bahraini human rights defender, was arrested for leading protests against the Bahraini government . AI said that Al-Khawaja was sentenced without a fair trial and was subject to torture and ill-treatment while in custody. However, no investigation to verify such ill-treatment has been initiated. The organization stressed that Al-Khawaja is a "prisoner of conscience" who led a peaceful demonstration which did not advocate violence against the government. Considering this contention and Bahrain's promise to release those who were jailed during the revolt, AI called on the government to release Al-Khawaja immediately:

Letter to King Hamad in support of Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja | Front Line | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

HM King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa
Office of The King
The Amiri Court, Rifa’a Palace
PO Box 555
Manama
Bahrain

Your Highness:

I am writing to express my deep concern for the health and welfare of Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja, who is a prisoner at the Jaw Prison in Bahrain. He has been on hunger strike since the night of February 8/9 and his health is deteriorating.

I know that the Foreign Minister of Denmark has made the specific request for Abdulhadi to be released to Denmark on humanitarian grounds, so that he can receive treatment both for the effects of the hunger strike and the ongoing pain he suffers as a result of the torture he suffered during his detention (BICI report, Annex B, Case #8).

Abdulhadi is well known as a human rights defender, and his work to support other human rights activists and victims of abuse is highly respected around the world. His conviction in a Bahraini court has been deemed unfair by the panel you empowered to review the cases that were brought before the National Safety Court.

Your Majesty, you are in the unique position of having this man’s life in your hands. I urge you to show mercy and grant his release from prison so that he may go to Denmark for urgent treatment.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Rights group urges Bahrain to free hunger striker | ABDULHADI ALKHAWAJA ! | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Amnesty International on Friday urged Bahrain to free a leading human rights activist who is on a hunger strike andreminded the Gulf kingdom's rulers to fulfill promises to release all those jailed for speaking out during the country's uprising.

...Amnesty called on Bahrain to release al-Khawaja and fulfill its promise to free all those who were jailed for speaking out during the revolt.

"The Bahraini authorities have made pledges that they would release people who were imprisoned for exercising their right to freedom of expression, but the continued imprisonment of Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja demonstrates that they are not serious about fulfilling such promises," said Philip Luther, the group's Middle East and North Africa Director in a statement.

King of Bahrain: Release human rights defender, Abdulhadi Al Khawaja

Abdulhadi Al Khawaja is a Bahraini human rights defender who was arrested in April 2011, beaten and tortured during the crackdown against those calling for reform.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment after a grossly unfair trial. Despite the recommendation (#1720, p. 423)) in theReport of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) that all those who had been tried by military courts should have their cases reviewed by ordinary courts, this has not yet occurred.

Abdulhadi launched his fourth hunger strike in eight months on 8/9 February and has declared that he will pursue this strike to freedom or death. .....

BAHRAIN: Human rights defender Abdulhadi Al- Khawaja enters 50th day of humger strike

BAHRAIN: Human rights defender Abdulhadi Al- Khawaja enters 50th day of humger strike | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

“I call on the Bahraini authorities to immediately release Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja on humanitarian grounds and allow him to go to Denmark for medical treatment as proposed by the Danish Government and supported by the UK and German governments and the European Parliament” said Andrew Anderson deputy director of Front Line Defenders in Dublin today ( Wednesday). Abdulhadi Al Khawaja has said that for him it is a choice of “Freedom or Death”

Al-Khawaja is protesting at his brutal arrest and detention, his torture while in custody and his life sentence handed down by the National Safety Court in trials which fell far short of international fair trial standards. This fact was acknowledged by the Bahrain Independent Commission of Enquiry (BICI).

Activist in fifth week of hunger strike in Bahrain jail | The Copenhagen Post | The Danish News in English | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

“We believe that the Foreign Ministry has done quite a lot to make a breakthrough in this case, but after a 40-day hunger strike his life is at stake, so we need to get through to Bahrain soon,” Ole Hoff Lund, of Amnesty International Denmark, told The Copenhagen Post. “The Foreign Ministry believes in a breakthrough, but time is running out.”

An independent report published last November detailed the abuse that al-Khawaja has faced in the Bahraini jail, including torture and sexual abuse, leading Søvndal to publicly castigate the Bahraini authorities.

But the Bahraini authorities seem to have taken little notice of the calls from the foreign minister and have yet to set a date for al-Khawaja’s appeal at the country's highest court.
