A family’s long standing involvement in the fight for human rights

A family’s long standing involvement in the fight for human rights | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Al-Khawaja is a Bahraini human rights activist and the current head of the foreign relations office for the Bahrain Center for Human Rights.

“The turning point for me was to see how the revolution in Bahrain evolved,” she says. “It all started with a small group of people demanding change and political involvement. Then despite the killings, the torture, and the cases of imprisonment, more and more people joined the demonstrations: they are my inspiration,” Al-Khawaja says.

[And you are the inspiration for so many in return!

Life's full circle......]

What's The State of ... Bahrain's Protests?

What's The State of ... Bahrain's Protests? | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
Maryam Al-Khawaja, the 24-year-old director of foreign relations for the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, is one of the few Bahrani activists speaking about the uprising outside the borders of the tiny, oil-rich island nation.
..." The regime is going to try and play a very smart game-- cracking down as severely as possible, and then suddenly making very artificial progress, which is what they’re doing right now by releasing a few prisoners, stopping the torture, allowing family visitations. But the youth are not buying into it this time. They remember what happened in 2001 – it’s not that long ago. They say, ‘You know what? Even if you’re going to make these artificial changes, we’re still going to protest and demand our rights.’

A special report on the torture and human rights violations against the detainees in the case of "Alliance for the Republic" | Bahrain Center for Human Rights

A special report on the torture and human rights violations against the detainees in the case of "Alliance for the Republic" | Bahrain Center for Human Rights | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
The military court in Bahrain issued harsh sentences against 21 opposition leaders and figures, including Abdul Hadi Al Khawajah, the prominent human rights activist.
The lack of international standards for trials and having civilians tried before a military court are blatant violations of their rights and a sign of the invalidity of the sentences issued.
Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) considers the detainees prisoners of conscience with no material evidence of their involvement in violence or the incitement of violence. The BCHR condemns their torture during interrogation and trial.
