#Ramadan Campaign for Dr. #Aafia #Siddiqui | 2013 | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

We are demanding the following:

1) An independent medical team from outside the Bureau of Prisons should be allowed to evaluate and
treat Dr. Siddiqui;

2) Her religious rights should be respected, including the right to be free from humiliating and
degrading strip searches, access to religious materials, and non-contact with male prison staff. It is also
Ramadan, and she should be provided appropriate accommodations to allow her to follow a
prayer and fasting schedule;

3) Permitted family visits (her last visit was over a year ago), without the usual degrading and punitive
post-visit treatment that Dr. Siddiqui is exposed to; and

4) More vigorous efforts on the part of the Pakistani government, and its representatives in the United
States, to have Dr. Siddiqui repatriated to Pakistan so that she can be reunited with her family and
children.

The Aafia Siddiqui Story » Counterpunch: Tells the Facts, Names the Names | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

....This terrible story is like something out of a nightmare, or a bad novel. But it is a true story, in so far as you can find the truth of events that are disputed and cloaked in the secrecy of multiple ‘security operations’. At least it is part of the story of the ordeal of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani woman, born into an upper middle class family with conservative religious values, who placed a high value on education and on service. It is a part of the story of a young woman who came to the US, initially to Texas, later to Massachusetts to attend various colleges, eventually achieving a degree in ‘Neuroscience’, though she was did not enjoy biology and chemistry but preferred the study of psychology and education. In fact she had prepared for a career teaching developmentally disabled children.[3]....

Free Dr. Aafia Siddiqui

Free Dr. Aafia Siddiqui | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

......The court proceedings were flawed, and limited to the incident in Ghazni, which itself lacked concrete evidence.

· It is still unexplained how a frail, 110 pound woman, confronted with three US army officers, two interpreters and two FBI agents managed to assault three of them, snatch a rifle from one of them, open fire at close range, hit no one, but she herself was wounded.

· There were no fingerprints on the gun.

· There was no gunshot residue from the gun.

· There were no bullet holes in the walls from that particular gun.

· There were no bullets cases or shells in the area from the specified gun.

· The testimony of the government’s six eyewitnesses contradicted each other.

· Aafia’s disappearance, torture and missing children were not at all addressed during the court case.

US denies reports of Aafia-Afridi prisoner swap agreement - DAWN.COM | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

The US embassy in Islamabad on Wednesday denied reports of a prisoner swap deal with Pakistan involving Dr Aafia Siddiqui.

Earlier this month, Pakistani media reported that the US had offered Pakistan to sign a prisoner exchange agreement, calling for a release of Pakistani prisoner Dr Shakil Afridi in exchange for the release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui.

“No, the United States government is not in discussions with the Government of Pakistan on a prisoner exchange or transfer involving Dr. Aafia Siddiqi,” said Meghan Gregonis, a spokesman for the US embassy.....

Dr. Aafia Assaulted in Prison to Point of Unconsciousness

Dr. Aafia Assaulted in Prison to Point of Unconsciousness | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

This past week, Dr. Aafia who is detained at Carswell Prison at a US Military base in Fort Worth, United States was physically assaulted in her prison cell and left unconscious and bleeding.  She eventually received medical care after two days and intervention by her lawyer, Ms. Tina Foster.  Dr. Aafia was visited by her lawyer within days of the incident and is now in better condition.  The Pakistani consulate in Texas also sent a high level team to visit Dr. Aafia.

She has still not been able to visit with family members. The last family visit was over a year ago.

This latest "incident" underscores the need for independent medical treatment of Dr. Aafia that is outside of the prison system. It also further highlights the urgent need for her repatriation to Pakistan where she may serve out her sentence and the governments can avoid the diplomatic problems that arise from incidents of this type.

Carswell prison claims it is conducting an "internal investigation into the incident". The findings will likely remain secret....

Who is Aafia Siddiqui | Defiance | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

"...

So is this was the major evidence FBI was looking for? She was punished for loving and doing efforts for Islam and now our sister is languishing in Texan jail, serving an 86 year sentence after being found guilty in a fabricated story. The way whole scene was sketched in the court was skeptical and more importantly, the evidence non-existent, no gunshot residue on her hands or clothes, no bullets from the discharged gun, no fingerprints belonging to  Aafia on the gun and other vital evidence removed by US military from the scene went missing before the trial. Brutal interrogation techniques were used to break her down.

Sometimes I wonder…. 50+ Muslim countries and one Aafia… Muslim countries with the richest natural resources… Pakistan, a country with nuclear capability, well trained Army … Detention of Aafia is a slap on the face of all Muslim Countries. Day is near my fellows when you and I will be questioned on the Day of Judgment and our eyes will be staring at our feet with our heads down with shame!..."

March 29 and 30 Protests To 'Free Aafia Siddiqui!'Tell U.S. Government “Free Aafia Siddiqui”

Dr. Aafia is a symbol of all that is wrong with the US government and its wars. Dr. Aafia is a Pakistani woman and mother, a U.S. educated neuroscientist, and a graduate of MIT and Brandeis University. She was illegally kidnapped with her three young children in Karachi, Pakistan in 2003, and then taken to U.S. custody in Afghanistan. Dr. Siddiqui was held in secret detention and tortured for 5 years. In 2008, as news of her secret detention and torture by U.S. forces in Afghanistan leaked out, it aroused national anger at press conferences and meetings across Pakistan. Then US officials suddenly claimed they had just found and arrested Dr. Siddiqui in Afghanistan.

Aafia Siddiqui, Islam's forgotten daughter..... | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

....

he “conviction” trumpeted by the Star is another claim that needs qualifying. Dr. Siddiqui was indeed given an 86-year sentence in a New York courtroom in September 2010, for allegedly trying to shoot some US soldiers in Afghanistan, but as Yvonne Ridley explained in a recent article for Ceasefire magazine, “The fact they shot her at close range and nearly killed her is often overlooked. To their eternal shame, the US soldiers serving in Afghanistan claimed in court under oath that the diminutive, fragile academic leapt at them from behind a prison cell curtain, snatching one of their guns to shoot and kill them. It was a fabricated story that any defence lawyer worth his or her salt would have ripped apart at the seams.”

Ridley also stated, “The scenario painted in court was incredulous and more importantly, the evidence non existent — no gunshot residue on her hands or clothes, no bullets from the discharged gun, no fingerprints belonging to Dr. Aafia on the gun. Other vital evidence removed by US military from the scene went missing before the trial … After being patched up in a medical wing in Bagram, she was then ‘renditioned’ to America to stand trial for an alleged crime committed in Afghanistan. Flouting the Vienna and Geneva Conventions, she wasn’t given consular access until the day she made her first court appearance.”....
