On Digital Badging, Edge Work, 12 Lessons After 12 Years | DMLcentral | Badges for Lifelong Learning | Scoop.it

In the summer of 2012, Global Kids, Inc. launched a beta test of its planned digital badging system. The test was designed to provide feedback on the system to support a fall launch throughout the entire organization. This Global Kids’ Badging System is built on top of Learning Times’ BadgeStack and is part of a broader badging network within the Hive NYC Learning Network (funded by the MacArthur Foundation).

Podcast: Martha J. Kanter and Jonathan Finkelstein on Digital Badges for Learning | BadgeStack Project

Podcast: Martha J. Kanter and Jonathan Finkelstein on Digital Badges for Learning | BadgeStack Project | Badges for Lifelong Learning | Scoop.it

Jonathan Finkelstein, founder of LearningTimes and director of the BadgeStack Project, recently spoke to Dr. Martha J. Kanter, Under Secretary of Education at the U.S. Department of Education.

The discussion turned towards digital badges and the role they can play in education and workforce development. Finkelstein asked Kanter to think ahead five or ten years to paint a picture of what the learning and working landscape would look like if individuals were to commonly earn and use badges to pick up and showcase knowledge and skills. Kanter offered an animated response, and made one of the best cases to date by a policy maker (or by anyone, for that matter) for the potential of microcredentials. She also connected the value of badges to President Obama’s goal of every American having at least one year of postsecondary education or training.

The conversation aired as part of the Innovators Spotlight, an online event event recognizing the achievements of the League for Innovation in the Community College award winners.

We call it BadgeStack™.

Webinar: Digital Badges and Meaningful Microcredential

Webinar: Digital Badges and Meaningful Microcredential | Badges for Lifelong Learning | Scoop.it

We will explore how informal and nontraditional learning environments are impacting how we think about education. In particular, we'll discuss peer-to-peer learning trends and unpack the need for microcredentials and badge-empowered learning, which Finkelstein is pioneering as part of major initiatives with groups such as the Smithsonian Institution, the New York City Department of Education, Yale University, WCET, and programs for schools, museums, libraries, and other nonprofit organizations across the globe. Finkelstein will share examples of new educational programs and online communities that leverage digital badges to build ongoing relationships with learners, foster engagement, and acknowledge learning that often goes unrewarded or unrecognized. Badges also help learners showcase discrete skills and competencies that have value in their current professional and social lives. We’ll look at how even formal educational programs can leverage the benefits of microcredentials.
