How do i get rid of fruit flies

How do i get rid of fruit flies | Backyard Gardening | Scoop.it
Emily Brown's insight:

Fill a quart jar with a 1/2 inch of apple cider vinegar and a small piece of banana. Roll up your paper into a funnel shape (larger at the top) and tape it in place. Place the funnel into your jar and make sure all the edges are secured shut with tape. You may have to adjust the size of your funnel to make sure it fits nicely into your jar. Place the jar where the fruit flies are flying around and let it go to work. You will be amazed at how well this trap works. The fruit flies will smell the fruit and climb inside, but for some odd reason they don’t fly back up the funnel to get out.

Growing Rose From Cutting

Growing Rose From Cutting | Backyard Gardening | Scoop.it
Emily Brown's insight:

My neighbour has a row of roses, which he took as cuttings. I asked how he took them. He simply plunges the cuttings into the ground. But his secret of success is the humble potato! Before planting cuttings, he pushes the bottom end into a small potato, which he believes keeps the cuttings moist as they develop roots. It sounds crazy, but his row of allotment roses is proof it works.

Tree Watering Bags

Tree Watering Bags | Backyard Gardening | Scoop.it
Emily Brown's insight:

This is such a great idea, and it works very well!

I fill this bag up once a week (it drains overnight and is usually low or empty the next day) and it waters slowly, so the water gets into the soil deep, rather than just running off (as it did when I tried to use a sprinkler to water the tree). It's easy to fill (just shove a hose in the red filler hole), and I have had no problems with the emitters (there are two of them on the underside) getting clogged or anything.

gardening in small spaces

gardening in small spaces | Backyard Gardening | Scoop.it
Emily Brown's insight:

I drilled plenty of holes in the gutters for drainage, and then hung the gutter on the outside of my balcony's railing (for maximum sun exposure). I filled it with potting soil and planted a mix of different organic lettuce seeds. In about a week I started to see small sprouts.

Planting a pineapple head

Planting a pineapple head | Backyard Gardening | Scoop.it
Emily Brown's insight:

First, Firmly twist the crown off. It will come off fairly easily. Then take the crown and pull off the lower leaves until you have about an inch or more of the core. You don't need them and they will get in the way of rooting the pineapple. Fill a jar with water and plop your crown into the jar. Place your pineapple jar in an area that gets decent light. then Within two weeks, some nice roots should develop. Then you can plant the pineapple whenever you're ready.

Getting Rid of Aphids

Getting Rid of Aphids | Backyard Gardening | Scoop.it
Emily Brown's insight:

Killing Aphids with Soap. HOMEMADE INSECTICIDAL SOAP CONCENTRATE 1/4 cup grated soap (I use Fels-Naptha, but Ivory or other real soap - see above - will work) 4 cups hot water Stir soap into water until dissolved. Store in a jar until ready to use. To dilute for plant use: Add 1 tsp. concentrate per 4 cups (32 oz.) of water. Pour solution into a spray bottle. This soap is a contact poison - spray directly onto the aphids. It will not harm your plants.

Emily Brown's insight:

Take the base from a stalk of celery, rinse it off, and put it in a shallow cup or jar of warm water on a window sill. Change the water daily and keep an eye on it to see if any regrowth begins. As you can see from the photos below, there were significant signs of regrowth within five days.

Sprouting Green Lentils

Sprouting Green Lentils | Backyard Gardening | Scoop.it
Emily Brown's insight:

Lentils help cleanse and stimulate the kidneys and adrenal system, strengthen the heart and circulation and boost energy and vitality. When lentils are germinated, their nourishment become more easily digestible, and after just 3-4 days of sprouting, their soluble fiber, which helps lower LDL cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar and regulate insulin levels, increases 300 percent!
