10 common video storytelling mistakes (and how to avoid them)

10 common video storytelling mistakes (and how to avoid them) | Backpack Filmmaker | Scoop.it

I say ‘trying’ because, as you’ll probably have seen, the vast amount of online video produced just doesn’t cut it. It’s long, boring, technically poor – and amateurish. This is a big shame because online video – done well – has the power to be an art form, to touch people, to make them understand something, to make them care.

As well as training journalists all over Europe in how to do video storytelling, and watching a helluva lot of video stories, I’ve also been teaching student journalists at Kingston University how to do video for more than two years.

Project X₂7 : Move a Final Cut Pro X Project to Final Cut Pro 7 and beyond!

Project X₂7 : Move a Final Cut Pro X Project to Final Cut Pro 7 and beyond! | Backpack Filmmaker | Scoop.it

Project X₂7 - an import translator for Final Cut Pro 7 - translates the brand new Final Cut Pro X Project XML (fcpxml) and converts it for import into Final Cut Pro 7. Your Final Cut Pro X Project becomes a Final Cut Pro 7 Sequence, in a new or existing project.

Project X₂7 (Project 10 to 7) allows you to take your Final Cut Pro X timeline (Project) to Final Cut Pro 7, Color, Adobe Premiere Pro (and then via dynamic link to After Effects) or other Final Cut Pro 7 XML workflow tools.

Via Final Cut Pro 7 you can also link to Soundtrack Pro (sadly Soundtrack Pro's project format has never been published), to Motion 4, or to OMF output for ProTools.

A Producer's Guide to Leveraging Twitter as a Social TV Tool

A Producer's Guide to Leveraging Twitter as a Social TV Tool | Backpack Filmmaker | Scoop.it

This is reprinted from The Twitter Developer's Website - Twitter TV. It's a wonderful document that will surely help Social Media practitioners in the TV arena. Unless you are French - where mentioning Twitter or Facebook has been banned by the French TV regulatory agency, Conseil Supérieur de l’Audiovisuel (CSA), similar to Ofcom in the UK and FCC in the US.

Twitter has released of a compendium of best practices for engaging and growing your audience on Twitter using the power of the TV screen - along with some compelling data in the form of graphs and a video. This is a living document that will grow and change over time at Twitter - as shows and networks continue to break new ground with Twitter on air.

True Stories, Honest Lies: Storytelling in a suit: the art and craft of business storytelling

True Stories, Honest Lies: Storytelling in a suit: the art and craft of business storytelling | Backpack Filmmaker | Scoop.it

Human beings are storytelling creatures. From our earliest hunter-gatherer days we have used story to explain and understand ourselves and our world. This is true of organizations as well. The stories organizations tell about themselves (branding, marketing, vision and mission) are how they wish to be seen externally. The stories they tell internally (newsletters, intranets, gossip, employee chatter) are how the organization sees itself. The stories they tell themselves about their customers shape the products they make and the services they offer. None of this is a surprise, of course, since organizations are created and maintained by humans, the storytelling animal.

Why Apple HTTP Live Streaming is not effective

A 15-year-old packet delivery system is buried within HTTP Live Streaming. It's time to rebuild it from the ground up.

Is old technology holding us back when it comes to searching for the promised land of efficient HTTP streaming? While the current hype surrounds HTTP delivery as being less costly—and by assumption, more efficient—than traditional streaming, the question is one that the industry should consider, in light of the advances in both HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) and fragmented MPEG-4 (fMP4) that have been announced recently.

The more mature (or long-in-the-tooth, depending on your perspective) technology on the market is MPEG-2 Transport Stream (M2TS), which makes up the packaging protocol for content delivery in HLS.

HLS has gained huge popularity, in no small part because it’s the only way to stream to the iOS devices. Let me be the first to say that MPEG-2 Transport Stream is a tried-and-true technology that has been used extensively for broadcast transmission over the past decade. Yet its age makes it a bit of a millstone that seems to be holding back advances in the over-all HTTP streaming marketplace.

YouTube Gets Free, Cloud-Based Video Editing Thanks To New WeVideo Integration

YouTube Gets Free, Cloud-Based Video Editing Thanks To New WeVideo Integration | Backpack Filmmaker | Scoop.it

WeVideo, a newly launched cloud-based collaborative video editing platform, is today announcing integration with YouTube. Starting this afternoon, YouTube users will be able to access a basic version of WeVideo’s online service in order to edit their video clips by adding titles, effects, animation, music, narration and more.

To be clear, WeVideo is not the only editing tool that Google’s online service provides, but it hopes to soon to be the most robust. YouTube’s own editor is fairly basic, and other tools like Magisto are more limited in scope. With WeVideo, the goal is to bring a more full-featured, professional-grade video-editing solution to the cloud that’s also easy enough for anyone to use.

Second screen advertising is a new paradigm

Second screen advertising is a new paradigm | Backpack Filmmaker | Scoop.it

Commercial broadcasters need to move quickly to ensure they have engaging second screen apps and content to keep viewers loyal beyond the main television screen, then find ways to sell that new inventory to advertisers. We are facing a period of disruption during which third-parties will fight them for eyeballs with companion apps that are synchronised, possibly in real-time, with what is happening on the television.

There could be new advertising money for TV, flowing from direct marketing budgets because of the interactivity and social engagement that is possible on the second screen. But there is no guarantee that this money will go to the people that created the programming that this new inventory relies upon. And there are warnings from the advertising industry that there will be no sentimental loyalty to broadcasters where direct marketing and data-centric buying agencies are involved.

While it is early days for synchronised second-screen advertising, it looks like this is going to be big.
