The Story of Story: How I Learned to Stop Worrying & Love Structure « No Film School

The Story of Story: How I Learned to Stop Worrying & Love Structure « No Film School | Backpack Filmmaker | Scoop.it

It is a truism that, “we tell ourselves stories in order to live.“ But, it is also remarkable what a human characteristic the drive for narrative is. We’ve been telling stories since we learned how to communicate, and though the experiences of the myriad individuals worldwide throughout all of existence are altogether unique, the way we’ve been telling those stories hasn’t changed since the times of Aristotle.

Shooting a film with the Phantom 2 and GoPro in Thailand. From Pre to shoot all the way through to post and uploading! | Backpack Filmmaker | Scoop.it

So here we are…a delayed part 3 of my Phantom blog post series. Although this is listed as 3 of 3 I doubt it will be the last time I write about.

Initially this was to be just a video review and it is all shot, but then it felt out of date to me and as it was all shot on location in the USA it was hard to make it work without being messy. I may come back to it at some point.

BREAKING BAD – Motivated Camera Movement

BREAKING BAD – Motivated Camera Movement | Backpack Filmmaker | Scoop.it

Cinema is a visual art form. It is universal and ubiquitous. The same images and stories flash by inside a darkened theater as they do inside your living room. Films enthrall us. They are spellbinding. They are magical. The spectacle of seeing moving images for the first time is something never forgotten. The first film I saw was JAWS at a drive-in theater in Canada at the age of 4. I’m still petrified of sharks. Thanks Spielberg!

What Exactly Does an Experienced Editor Do? This Short Animation Reveals Everything

What Exactly Does an Experienced Editor Do? This Short Animation Reveals Everything | Backpack Filmmaker | Scoop.it

We live in an age where a 6-year-old with a laptop and a copy of iMovie can edit some footage together. Editing software is abundant and as easy to use as it has ever been, and the masses are using these tools to flood the internet with copious amounts of video content. But most of us can agree that simply being able to make edits does not necessarily make a person an editor, at least in the sense of the editing being a creative art form.

News Shooter | Video interview: Vincent Laforet on his upcoming Directing Motion tour – will it be useful for factual shooters? | Backpack Filmmaker | Scoop.it

Vincent Laforet is the best known pioneer of the video DSLR revolution with his early work on the 5D mkII. Once a news photographer for the New York Times, he turned his attention to creating video and is now a director working in LA. The move from stills to shooting video, and now to directing, has taught Laforet many things. One key difference is that great film and video require the mastery of motion – how to move the camera in a dynamic way that helps tell your story and makes it more engaging for the audience.
