How to avoid the BOTS and Twitter users who waste your time

How to avoid the BOTS and Twitter users who waste your time | B2B Lead Generation and Social Media | Scoop.it

"[There are]t people (and often just machines) whose lone goal is to sell you stuff. Some of them just collect followers for sale. For these reasons, there is no point to follow them.

Excerpts:

Type 1: “Following equals followers”
They are kind of guys, who have the same number of followers as the number of people they follow. [They] gain followers is to start following some unaware people. They are so surprised someone is interested in their tweets, they instantly feel obliged to follow back. Well, this is the way honest people act, isn’t it? The type described here know that. They don’t read your tweets, but they certainly care to spam you properly with their owns.

Type 2: “Thanks for following”
You start to follow people who you find interesting. Suddenly, you get a notification someone mentioned you. For a budding Twitter user it’s always a heartbeat. You discover someone thanked you for following them! While it’s nice, you should look carefully at that person.

[Also note that “Thank-yous”] are just one of [many] normal selling techniques. It’s pretty likely, the whole account is just to tweet about nothing, and to target you with a product the guy is selling from time to time.

Type 4: “Tweeting dusk to dawn” - [The Twitter Bots]
Before following someone, always have a look at their profile. Good look, good bio, decent number or followers. …you notice they have 4.3k tweets. That means they tweet 20 times a day and have 20 hands and 10 heads. In other words, they are actually a team of people, not a single person. This may not be something absolutely bad as long as the tweets are interesting. Popular websites and companies have such accounts.

But be aware the "user" is not going to read anything you write.

Type 5: “Optimistic spammers”
[Review] recent tweets by someone you are going to follow. ...some [are by] desperate entrepreneurs who were told Twitter was good for marketing. Such accounts are full of rubbish like “Did you see our latest offer today?” or the avatar is some soulless logo. Keep away!

Good points by Greg here, especially how to TELL if you are dealing with a TwitterBot, an early version of the Matrix, just ready to lull you into a machine relationship with no benefit to you at all, other than if you just want to buy stuff you may not need.

Good piece wth a video included.  ~  Deb

Death To Corporate Speak! Why You Gotta Fight For Your Right To Parlance

Death To Corporate Speak! Why You Gotta Fight For Your Right To Parlance | B2B Lead Generation and Social Media | Scoop.it

This week, corporate word abuse was taken to a new level. As Fast Company senior editor Jason Feifer notes in this week's episode of The 29th Floor, yogurt slingers Chobani and a consultant named Dov Seidman are battling in court over who owns the word “How.”

Brands are trying their hardest to rewire the way you speak--renaming products, what we call ourselves at work, and even how we think about ourselves as customers. And you shouldn't play along. Jason tells you why in the above video. You'll never order your Starbucks coffee the same way again....

Growing Up Mobile: How Brands on Facebook Can Reach Younger Users

Growing Up Mobile: How Brands on Facebook Can Reach Younger Users | B2B Lead Generation and Social Media | Scoop.it
People in the 13-through-24 age group are optimistic, want to learn about other countries and cultures, forward-looking, value friends and family, and use social media to stay in touch with those friends and family, according to a study by culture experts Crowd DNA, commissioned by Facebook.

Crowd DNA surveyed 11,000 people between the ages of 13 and 24 in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Norway, Sweden, the U.K. and the U.S., conducting 165 qualitative interviews. Facebook introduced the study’s findings in a post on the Facebook for Business page:

This article reviews what marketers should be doing in order to market to the generation that grew up with the internet and social media. It's important for these marketers to focus on social media marketing because that's where they spend a majority of their time. Research has found that around 65% of teenagers are communicating with their friends and family on a regular basis on social media.

Facebook says that marketers need to realize that teenagers in today's society are the same as they were 20 years ago, as they're still dealing with the same drama and life changes. They're still growing up, and companies should consider that in knowing that they're impressionable, and are still developing. They typically like to hear about stories about people who have overcome something in their life, or who have certain talent, because they will feel that they can relate to those people and look up to them. They will be more encouraged and influenced by the brand, when they are inspired by someone's story.

What the Hell is Ello and Why Should Brands Care? | NewsCred

What the Hell is Ello and Why Should Brands Care? | NewsCred | B2B Lead Generation and Social Media | Scoop.it

"Even if you’ve been blissfully unplugged for the past week or so (and chances are, you haven’t), you’ve probably heard by now of a little thing called Ello. The nascent social network, which launched in March of this year, seemed to have exploded overnight, on the heels of a relatively small but significant Facebook exodus..."

Jessica Kelly's curator insight, October 8, 9:36 PM

So it's interesting to see that yes, brands, are dipping their toes in the Ello waters, but on the non-marketing side, there are a lot of discussions floating around about Ello's lack of privacy. It seems that some people are leaving in droves just as new folks are signing up. If you're interested in diving a little deeper, here's a good starting point: http://bit.ly/ZeQMU0

Personally, I think that Ello misses the mark in representing itself as an alternative to Facebook (or G+), which offer many ways to choose and filter connections--ways that are in no way available on Ello. To me, Ello feels more like a scaled-down (and much quieter) Twitter. What do you think?

Snapchat Gets Ads?

I have really mixed feelings on this.

The market is definitely saying they're tired of ads - yet well done ads continue to work.

The market is also saying they're tired of aggressive data tracking and privacy infringement and I have to note the Snapchat has "said the ads would not be targeted" which is an interesting move.

Snapchat also says that users may choose whether or not to view the adds, so I assume they will arrive like a message from a friend, and you can open them or ignore them.

That still makes them clutter - but also makes it more incentived for the ads to be interesting to get that open click.

How to Effectively Market Your Brand's B2B Message on Twitter

How to Effectively Market Your Brand's B2B Message on Twitter | B2B Lead Generation and Social Media | Scoop.it

What was once a way for the technorati to share their day-to-day activities with the rest of the world, 140 characters at a time, Twitter has emerged to take on a much more powerful role than many of us expected. In short, this social network has revolutionized the way people connect and share with each other. In addition, it has also been proven to be an excellent tool for B2B communication. However, leveraging Twitter for this purpose requires a different strategy than someone would typically use for engagement.

There are clear rewards for businesses that make good-faith efforts to engage current and prospective customers through social media. Not only have we witnessed growing interest in Twitter as a platform for customer service and product support, more recently, conversations related to the role of social media in B2B marketing have also included Twitter. What drives most of the social media utilization is the fact that 56% of consumersbelieve that mobile makes the shopping experience more enjoyable....
