Mike Allton's insight:

How to Test and Refine Your Google+ Strategy by +Stephan Hovnanian

STRATEGY: from the Greek stratēgia, meaning "art of troop leader", is the art of planning and directing operations and movements to achieve one or more goals.

It's one thing to come up with a plan on how to be successful at something. It's another thing to have systems and processes in place to know whether or not that plan is successful. When you've positioned yourself to be able to monitor and improve on your actions, that's when you've begun to implement true strategy.

If you want to develop a strong strategy for Google+, that's where a tool like +Steady Demand comes in.

In today's guest blog, Stephan, a Google+ expert and author, shares with us not only how to use the Steady Demand tool, but also offers 5 specific strategies for Google+ success that the tool supports.

Take a look and then jump back here and let me know what you think. Will you try Steady Demand? How about some of those specific strategies Stephan suggests?

Mike Allton's insight:

Are You Branding Your HOAs?

If you've attended more than a couple HOAs lately, you may have noticed that some businesses and hosts take the time to use a custom header graphic, or even a cool teaser video, to help brand and promote their Event.

Google Verifies Full-Bleed Image Requirements

Google Verifies Full-Bleed Image Requirements | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
When Google+ began rendering article shares with larger images and a description back in March, there was a great deal of scuttling about, trying to determine what it took to get that treatment. If you look at my original post, there was update after update as new information was discovered and changes were affected on Google+.
Mike Allton's insight:

How to Get Full-Bleed Images on Google+

Thanks to some Article Rendering documentation spotted by +Mark Traphagen earlier, we now know exactly what it takes to trigger the large image treatment of link previews that we've had available since March.

We've known for some time that a minimum width of 506px was required. What wedidn't know was that Google+ was also looking at the kind of content being shared. Specifically, only Articles and Blogs are receiving this rendering, hence the name,Article Rendering.

For that, you need to make sure that your Meta Tags are in place using either Open Graph or Schema.org and that the Type tag is set to Article, Blog or BlogPost.

For a complete breakdown, including image aspect ratio requirements and more, refer to the article below.

How to Track Google+ Post Impressions

How to Track Google+ Post Impressions | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
While we're still waiting on official Google+ analytics, here's one trick you can use so find out exactly how many people potentially saw your status update.
Mike Allton's insight:

Want to know how many times a Google+ post has been viewed?

As businesses and marketers, there are a lot of metrics that we want to review in order to help us understand how we're doing on social media, and whether our past activity has contributed to growth of the business.

Unfortunately, the metrics we want often just aren't there.

One of the first measurements we want to see is simply how many people potentially saw our post. Call it reach or impressions or views... it's just a number of eyeballs that might have seen our update.

And while we're still waiting on official Google+ Analytics (which they've said is coming), and there are a growing number of third-party tools that are attempting to bridge the gap, there's actually a pretty easy way you can begin to tell how many people are viewing your post.

Learn how: http://owl.li/wuqkQ

So now, in addition to the standard social signals of +1's, Comments and Shares, you can also add in Views to your metrics. When combined with Google Analytics for website traffic and conversion goals, you can really start to see how your Google+ activity is paying off.

But don't forget, as +Stephan Hovnanian has mentioned, not every post has to have the same goals. While driving website traffic may be your most important goal, you can and should create posts that have alternate goals, and Brand Recognition might just be one of them (in which case View count becomes your best metric).

Do you agree?

The 5 Other Landing Pages your Business Needs

The 5 Other Landing Pages your Business Needs | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
While you may already have a landing page devoted to a final sale, conversion, or free trial, you need more than one page that leads your potential customers in the right direction.
Mike Allton's insight:

Multiball racks up the most points

Ever play pinball? The pinball machines were always my favorites out of all the arcade games. At Ohio State we had an Addams Family machine in the lobby of my dorm and I loved to head there after dinner and just crush it.

My favourite part of the game was multiball, and my friends just couldn't understand that.

You see, if you place the ball just right, or hit the right bumper at the right time, you can get two or three balls flying around at the same time. It looks like madness.

It's typically the most intense part of the game, as you now have three moving objects to track with your eyes, and still just the two paddles to lever to try and control the action. Fire one up a ramp while you send another to the top of plane where it can bounce around the pegs for a while. Maneuver your left paddle to hold a ball there while you line up the right paddle for the perfect shot.

It's exciting and tense and, not surprisingly, the most rewarding time of the game. With three balls going at once, can you imagine all the points I'm racking up?

Wishpond's +James Scherer is spot on when he compares your landing pages to bumpers in pinball. You should have a page or two within your website that helps prospects take that critical next step toward becoming a customer. They're the ball, and that landing page is the bumper that sends them up the ramp to fortune and glory. James suggests that you need more landing pages for different kinds of prospects to make sure that none of them fall straight through the flippers to the bottom, and I couldn't agree more.

Take a look at his guest post and the fantastic examples he's offered of what to do, and what not to do, and think about your own website. What landing pages do you have set up now? Which ones do you need to work on?

And don't be afraid of multiball.

How To Create Google +Post Ads

How To Create Google +Post Ads | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Google has implemented a system where active Google+ businesses can promote their Google+ posts throughout the Google display network as an ad. Here's how to get started.
Mike Allton's insight:

How To Create Google +Post Ads

As you may have heard, Google opened up the +Post ad option to anyone with at least 1000 followers this week.

+Mark Traphagen explained that, “What’s different here is that Google is enabling social content ads that aren’t on the social platform. Instead of littering Google+ with ads (one of the unsung benefits of Google+ is that three years in its stream are still ad free), +Post ads are places where people expect to see ads: on websites that already have Google Display ads.”

So how do we get started? Many businesses are chomping at the bit to start experimenting with these new ads and working toward driving traffic and interest to their business and Google+ presence. So I've written up exactly how to do that. Using the guide below, you'll be able to create your first Campaign and +Post Ad.

We'll also go over the different ad sizes and types, and reveal a couple of new findings.

Learn more: http://bit.ly/1i1S7PU

What questions do you have about +Post Ads? Will you consider using them for your own business? Does it help to know that you can use posts from a personal profile or a page?
