How to Make Your Business More Lucrative through YouTube

How to Make Your Business More Lucrative through YouTube | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Many people don’t really figure YouTube into their online marketing strategy, but you should. Here are 10 tips to help you use YouTube to make your business more lucrative.
Mike Allton's insight:

10 tips to make your business more lucrative using YouTube

I don't like video.

I don't have any skill with graphics or video editing, and I am not at all comfortable with my video presence.

If I'm being perfectly honest, I don't even like watching video. I would much rather read a story than watch a story, and often ignore ESPN clips and look for other sources of news if I want to find something out and the result was a video.

But the fact is, most people aren't like me.

Most people love watching video and being educated and entertained, and the staggering growth and use of YouTube is a testament to that fact.

So how are you using YouTube to improve your business?

Personally, I'm deliberately participating in more Hangouts On Air and using that content to reach a broader audience, as well as embedding them on my own site. And next year, I have several ideas for ways that I might create videos and upload them to YouTube to take advantage of the platform.

Guest blogger +Emma-Julie Fox details 10 ways you can use and improve on your YouTube presence. I'm looking forward to going through each of these tips and applying them to my YouTube channel next year!

Read all ten tips: http://www.thesocialmediahat.com/blog/how-make-your-business-more-lucrative-through-youtube-12042013

Naming the Nameless: Google’s Quest to Deal in Real Names

Naming the Nameless: Google’s Quest to Deal in Real Names | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Google has been insisting on the use of Real Names on Google+, and with the changes to YouTube comments requiring Google+ accounts, that reality is now hitting YouTube. Pros and cons?
Mike Allton's insight:

What do you think about being Anonymous on Social Media?

So while Google has tried to enforce the use of real names on Google+ for a while now, many of you have noticed that YouTube has adopted the Google+ comment system, requiring that anyone who wants to leave a comment must be logged into their Google+ account. That means that real names are becoming a requirement on Google+ and YouTube.

Many have appreciated these moves, while others have complained. And there's an argument to be made for both sides. Guest blogger +Benjamin Taylor points out that the increased accountability comes at a cost of freedom of expression. And that while there may be a positive impact on interconnectivity, there's actually a very real risk to people in some situations.

Read the full post: http://www.thesocialmediahat.com/blog/naming-nameless-google-s-quest-deal-real-names-12032013

What do you think about these changes, and the direction we're headed? Do you appreciate Google forcing the use of real names, or do you think users have a right to be anonymous on social networks?

Thanks for your comments and opinions!

Should You Blog On Holidays?

Should You Blog On Holidays? | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Whether or not to write and publish a new blog post on a holiday may seem like an obvious answer to some, but the fact is, there may be a number of benefits that warrant consideration.
Mike Allton's insight:

Is anybody reading my Holiday blog post?

If you've ever published a blog post on a holiday, you may have been wondering that very thought. Was it a waste of time? Should you have been basting your turkey instead?

In fact, most bloggers simply assume that the answer will be no and choose not to publish at all. They assume that all of their readers are spending time with family and friends, and are too busy to read or hop online.

I think they're wrong.

I think that, while normal businesses should absolutely not publish on holidays, full-time bloggers need to give it careful consideration.

To demonstrate, I've published this article on Thanksgiving, and outlined a number of questions to ask yourself when deciding whether or not to publish, as well as steps to take to ensure that your Holiday Blog post is just as successful as on any other day.

Please read the full post: http://www.thesocialmediahat.com/article/should-you-blog-holidays

What about you? Have you ever blogged on a holiday? How did it go?

Now, I do wish you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving! I'm so thankful for each of you, and appreciate that you've taken the time to read and talk to me about this article and so many others. I will be spending the day with family, but I also consider many of you family and will be here on Google+ throughout the day. Enjoy!

Pinterest is fast becoming the leading driver for retail sales, particularly in comparison to other social networks. According to a study cited by +James Scherer of +Wishpond, each pin is repinned on average 10 times, and the value of these pins has risen to over $0.75 - that's 25% higher than last year, and a greater ROI than other social networks.

So what does that mean? It means you need to make sure that you have an active, optimized presence for your business on Pinterest! For more info on how Pinterest is performing, and what you need to do to take advantage, read the rest of the article from James below.

5 Social Media Mistakes Businesses Are Making

5 Social Media Mistakes Businesses Are Making | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
More and more businesses are trying to use social media to promote themselves, but the fact is there are dozens of things these businesses are doing wrong. Here are 5 mistakes that can be easily fixed.
Mike Allton's insight:

Are you making these social media mistakes?

Social Media for business isn't exactly easy. There really is an art form to creating a presence on social networks that works for a business instead of against a business. And it's made more complicated by the fact that every business and how they use social media needs to be unique. You can't just replicate what other businesses are doing.

And yet many do, and many make a lot of other mistakes. +Jeremy Smith has focused on 5 mistakes that businesses are making every day, that are really hurting their ability to effectively leverage social media. Can you guess what some of them are?

Should businesses push what they do on social media?

Should businesses push what they do on social media? | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
One of the questions I get asked a lot, and even talked about in a recent HOA, is whether or not businesses should promote themselves on social media.
Mike Allton's insight:

Should businesses push what they do on social media?

On the one hand, there are those who think that business have no place on social media, that it's called social for a reason.

On the other hand, there are those that think social networks are perfect for businesses, that they're called networks for a reason.

In which camp are you?

Do you agree that businesses should be using social media? And if so, is there a right or a wrong way to talk about themselves? (And by businesses, I'm referring to both branded business Pages as well as individual profiles for people who want to do business as themselves.)

You can probably guess what I think, but in today's blog I not only express my opinion, but also offer 4 specific ways that businesses and individuals can sell themselves on social media.

SECURITY RELEASE: Drupal 6.x and 7.x

SECURITY RELEASE: Drupal 6.x and 7.x | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Just before the Thanksgiving holiday, the following security update was released by Drupal. Multiple vulnerabilities were fixed in the supported Drupal core versions 6 and 7.
Mike Allton's insight:

Time to Update your Drupal Site

Is your website running on Drupal 6.x or 7.x? If so, there was a major security release last week that addresses 7 different vulnerabilities found in core.

Now, the good news is, most of these vulnerabilities are mitigated in one way or another such that it's unlikely the standard Drupal implementations would be impacted. For example, there's a cross-site scripting issue that's only a problem if the attacker has administrative permission for field descriptions.

But regardless, ALL Drupal sites are advised to apply these updates within the next 7 - 14 days. Read more about the update in the release below, and please contact me to schedule your site update if you need assistance.

Please share with anyone you know who may be running their site on Drupal.

Should bloggers and businesses share old content?

Should bloggers and businesses share old content? | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
We are going to dig into why you should indeed be sharing your old content, including which posts to share, some techniques for doing it, when to reshare, and ways to repurpose old content.
Mike Allton's insight:

Should you share old content?

The question of whether or not businesses and bloggers should share and reshare their old content seems to be one of mild debate. I think most bloggers and social media marketers would agree that there's a valid argument to be made for sharing those old posts, and correct methods for doing so. Yet I do see some people suggesting that such activity isn't genuine and more like spam than efforts to create interest and engagement.

What do you think? Do you have an opinion either way?

Or, perhaps you're a business or blogger who simply hasn't realized the value or proper techniques for using that old content, and if that's you, today's article will be immensely helpful.

Read what, why and how here: http://www.thesocialmediahat.com/article/should-bloggers-and-businesses-share-old-content

Covered in the article:

1. Why Businesses Should Reshare Evergreen Content
2. What Content Should Businesses Reshare?
3. How Should Businesses Reshare Old Content?
4. When Should Businesses Reshare Old Content?
5. What Tools Can Businesses Use to Reshare Old Content?
6. How Can Businesses Repurpose Old Content?

Let me know if you have an opinion on resharing old content, or if you have questions on how you can use your own blog archive.

Is this a game changer?

Everypost is a mobile app that allows you to share status updates to multiple social networks simultaneously. The folks at +Everypost have just added support for Google+ Pages, Facebook Pages and LinkedIn Company Pages. That, combined with the app's ability to customize each status update for each network before sending, makes it a social media management tool worth considering, don't you think?

Feeding off Each Other: How to Combine Social Media with Ecommerce

Feeding off Each Other: How to Combine Social Media with Ecommerce | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
If you're selling products online, you may be struggling with how to work social media into your marketing strategy. Sharing your latest specials just won't work. Here are 5 ideas for you.
Mike Allton's insight:

Using Social Media to Support Ecommerce

Do you have an online store? If so, you've probably noticed that getting traction for your store on social media can be challenging. Business owners that treat Facebook and Google+ as simple advertising venues to spam their latest specials go nowhere fast.

Developing relationships and engaging customers on social media is a slow process. It can be extremely rewarding, but should never be confused with more traditional marketing methods.

However, there are other ways that businesses can use social media to market to potential customers and drive traffic to their online stores and products. Guest writer+Rohan Ayyar walks us through several ways that businesses can combine social media with ecommerce and get results. With Cyber Monday coming up fast, now's the time to jump on these techniques.

Google+ for iOS Continues to Improve

Google+ for iOS Continues to Improve | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Google released a nice little update to the iOS version of the Google+ mobile app, and it included quite a few improvements, both documentation and undocumented.
Mike Allton's insight:

Do you want to see your Google+ friends near you?
...and do you want them to see you?

You may not have noticed, but there was an update to Google+ for iOS pushed out over the weekend that added quite a few changes and updates.

1. The new notification system was brought to mobile.
2. Comment translations were added to mobile.
3. Images are now backed up in full resolution.
4. And Location Sharing...

Using your app, you can check out where your Google+ friends are, and they can see where you are.

Fortunately, this isn't Facebook. The permissions aren't set to Share All or anything like that. You have to expressly grant permission for individuals or circles to be able to see where you're at. It's more like Find Friends for iOS.

But for those interested in enabling and using this feature, it's pretty interesting! If I'm planning a trip to Southern California, I can see if anyone I've circled is out there whom I might want to schedule a meeting with. Or if I'm rooting for my St. Louis Blues to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight, I might message a few of my friends in Toronto and talk some trash. Or I might just check to see if my Mom is home and available to Hangout with her granddaughter.

Check out the article before for more details on all of the new features and updates, and specific information on Location Sharing, including how to use it and how to adjust your settings.

Do you think you'll enable Location Sharing? What other uses can you think of?

Thanks!

Why Your Business is in Danger | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
The world is now mobile. If your business isn't, then you run the risk of being outsmarted by your competition. Find out what to do about it, and what it means to be a mobile business.
Mike Allton's insight:

Non-mobile websites will be dead within a year.

Do you think that's too bold of a claim? Perhaps. But the fact is, nearly half of consumers today won't return to a webpage if it doesn't load properly on their mobile device. And with more and more consumers getting and using mobile devices for their shopping and daily lives, just how do you think it will be before that statistic goes up to 75% or 80%?

Or, more succinctly, just how long do you think your non-mobile site will be able to compete and still acquire customers and sales?
