Building a Natural Backlink Profile

Building a Natural Backlink Profile | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
For anyone that is building links or actively seeking out backlinks for their site, one of the most important things to keep in mind is the look of your backlink profile.
Mike Allton's insight:

How to Build Natural Links

We all know that one of the key SEO factors for a website is the links from other sites to yours. These are referred to as Backlinks, but Google strives daily to determine if the links to your site are "natural" or "contrived." How do you avoid the inevitable penalties that can come from having unnatural links?

It starts by understanding what a natural link looks like: Google is only interested in links that other people might choose to put on their websites to your site, so the most common is a "branded link" which is your company name linked to your home page. The majority of your links should be branded links or just the straight URL to your Home Page.

From there, guest author +Andrew Dennis outlines our other options for natural looking links, as well as why it's important to mix up the kinds of sites where these links are found.

As a blogger or business website owner, are you actively pursuing backlinks for your website or landing pages? How often do you use Google Webmaster Tools to check your link profile?

If you want to make sure your site search engine ranking not only improves, but continues to perform well, check out Andrew's post.

How to Bulk Schedule Messages Using HootSuite

How to Bulk Schedule Messages Using HootSuite | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
We are continuing our series on How to Make the Most of Your HootSuite Account by reviewing how to use the Bulk Schedule tool within HootSuite, including great reasons for bulk scheduling.
Mike Allton's insight:

When is Scheduling Social Media Activity OK?

There are dozens and dozens of tools and apps available for scheduling and automating your social media activity, and I've talked about many of them, including HootSuite, Buffer, Everypost, DoShare and more.

But when I talk about being active on social networks and engaging your followers and connections, while at the same time promoting the use of certain tools, am I being disingenuous? I don't think so.

I believe there are truly valid and valuable reasons and instances where the scheduling of social media activity is warranted. A few examples are:

1. Holiday Greetings
2. Out of Office / Out of Town messages
3. Regular Reminders for things like weekly chats
4. Resharing evergreen articles and content

Today's article continues our #HootSuiteSeries  and dives into the ways that+HootSuite users can set up and use the Bulk Schedule feature within HootSuite. If you haven't tried it yourself, I would encourage you to check it out.

What do you think about scheduling in general? What other circumstances do you think it's OK to schedule the activity, or are you in the camp that believes that no scheduling or automation of any kind is appropriate?

Please share the post with others who might be interested in the discussion or HootSuite, and let me know what you think of the article and HootSuite bulk scheduling.

Thanks!!

6 Tips for using Twitter to help promote your event | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Following our article 8 Tips to Promote your event using Facebook, we've produced this tips guide so you can make the most of publicising your event with Twitter to compliment your Facebook event page.
Mike Allton's insight:

How to Promote Events on Twitter

Neil Cavanagh took the time to outline 8 tips on how to promote events using Facebook (http://ow.ly/oI4Ck), and now he's followed that up with 6 more tips on how to use Twitter. I particularly like that he's tied the two together.

For instance, make sure that you not only use appropriate hashtags in your tweets, but that you select a consistent hashtag that will represent your event, and tie all of your tweets together, as well as allow participants at the event to join in the online conversation.

Have you ever used Twitter or other social networks to promote an event? What other tips would you add?

How to Access HootSuite via Web, Mobile, App or Extension | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
We are continuing our series on How to Make the Most of Your HootSuite Account by reviewing the actual ways businesses can access HootSuite from a technical perspective - web, mobile, app and more.
Mike Allton's insight:

Did you know HootSuite has a Chrome Extension?

Dubbed the "hootlet", this extension for both Chrome and Firefox is one of my must-have extensions. It not only allows me to generate a HootSuite message that can be shared and scheduled for multiple networks on the fly, it also inserts a HootSuite share button onto other share dialogue boxes. So, if I click a Facebook Share button on your blog, I can easily choose to share that post to my other social networks.

Interestingly, that's not the only way I can use HootSuite. From the web to the mobile app to extensions, there are multiple tools and interfaces provided by +HootSuite to help me manage my social networks and create activity and engagement opportunities. Today's article, and the next installment in our HootSuite Series, takes you through all of your options.

Android: Taking Over the Market?

Android: Taking Over the Market? | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
According to Google, Android tablet activations approached 10 million by the end of 2012. Since that time, the number has skyrocketed to 70 million. Android taking over?
Mike Allton's insight:

Is Google's OS Strategy better than Apple's?

If you own a tablet or are in the market for one, chances are it's running Android or iOS, though Microsoft continues to try to remain relevant.

Aside from style and base apps, the major difference between Android and iOS is Closed vs. Open source. The Android OS is free and open, and can be used by a variety of manufacturers, while iOS is strictly for Apple devices.

As a direct result, Android has gone from 10 million activations to over 70 million activations. That means millions more Android devices using the Google Play Store to find and purchase apps, instead of using iTunes.

Will Apple's controlling strategy prove more stable and secure in the long run, or will the Apple ecosystem be relegated to second-fiddle once again? Guest blogger+Calvin Sellers shares his thoughts below. What do you think?

Watch for HootSuite Security Emails

Watch for HootSuite Security Emails | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
HootSuite's solution to potential security issues due to third-party website vulnerabilities was brilliant. As a HootSuite user, it's important that you're aware of these measures.
Mike Allton's insight:

Why I make sure to never miss an email from hootsuite.com

A couple weeks ago, HootSuite noticed a dramatic increase in login attempts occurring simultaneously. Upon investigation, they found that someone had obtained a list of username and password combinations from another online service, and were blindly running them against a HootSuite login to see if any of them worked. Fortunately, very few did, but it raised an alarming possibility. If you use the same email and password for other sites as you do for HootSuite, and those other sites are compromised, the hacker would immediately gain access to your HootSuite account.

HootSuite's solution was brilliant. They make use of a combination of third-party authentication (i.e. Twitter), plus a notification email, to ensure that access to your account is as protected as possible, and account owners are immediately notified of access attempts.

I've made sure that any notification emails from HootSuite go right to my Inbox, and you should too. You can learn more in the article below, or let me know if you have any questions or concerns about HootSuite or Social Media security.

Apple Officially Announces iPhone 5S and 5C

Apple Officially Announces iPhone 5S and 5C | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Apple has held their event and officially ended the rampant rumors on what is coming in Apple's flagship product: the iPhone. And surprisingly, the rumor mill was largely spot on.
Mike Allton's insight:

It's Official. iPhone 5S and 5C Available in 10 Days.

The new iPhones will be in stores on Sept. 20th and as expected, we'll have a choice of the iPhone 5C in blue, white, green, yellow or red; and the iPhone 5S in black, gold or silver.

Impressive. Most impressive.

As an iPhone 4S user, I can't wait to upgrade. The new iPhone 5S is pretty amazing, with a powerful A7 chip, 64-bit architecture, and impressive graphics.

And the new iOS7 will be available as a free download to everyone a couple days earlier.

If you're interested in all of the specs and details, including the new camera, fingerprint sensor and more, check out this afternoon's coverage.

But here's the question I'm most interested in:

Would you consider the iPhone 5C, knowing that it's essentially an iPhone 5, a premium product? And if so, what then is the iPhone 5S? Or do you think the 5C is really a cheaper model? Are you interested in either or both for yourself?

Thanks for your comments!!

Special thanks to +Chris Pirillo for his running commentary during the announcements. If you have a chance, be sure to listen to his YouTube recording of the event, and mention "pancake" in the comments.

Google+ Adds Embedded Posts and Author Attribution

Google+ Adds Embedded Posts and Author Attribution | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
The enhancements are designed to help authors get the credit for their work that they deserve, as well as expand their audience on Google and across the web.
Mike Allton's insight:

Embed Google+ Posts and Automatic Authorship

Big news from the Google+ developers today:

1. Content creators can now embed dynamic Google+ posts.

 - Just like Tweets and other social network posts, you can take a Google+ post, anyone's post, and embed it into a blog entry or webpge.

2. Wordpress and Typepad users who sign in with their Google+ account automatically get Google Authorship.

 - With more platforms to be added soon, content authors will have an easier time achieving the authorship that Google wants for all of us.

Find out more in this afternoon's update below, including an example of an embedded post.

What's the big deal?

Aside from being pretty cool to be able to embed a post, the whole point here is that these developments make it that much easier for content authors to get the credit they deserve. Rather than quote something someone said on Google+, you can quote them in your blog and show the entire post, allowing that author to get full credit and be seen by your readers (and vice versa when it happens for you).

And many still struggle with setting up Google Authorship. Some platforms just aren't easy to manipulate and insert automatic links and tags - but soon that will all change.

How many of you have set up Google Authorship on your own sites?

Thanks for reading, and enjoy your evening!

LinkedIn Brings Endorsements to Mobile

LinkedIn Brings Endorsements to Mobile | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
With today's update, LinkedIn members can now view their top skill endorsements on their mobile profile, as well as accept and grant endorsements from and for other members.
Mike Allton's insight:

Are LinkedIn Endorsements Spam?

LinkedIn Endorsements are not going away any time soon. While many have criticized LinkedIn and complained about the crowdsourced social signals, LinkedIn has forged ahead and has now added Skills & Expertise support to their mobile app, allowing us to view, approve and submit skill endorsements from anywhere.

But are they really as bad as people say?

No one has ever tried to endorse me for a skill that was inappropriate or even inaccurate. And whenever LinkedIn has recommended that I endorse one of my connections for a skill, they've always appeared to make sense.

And I can honestly report that I have received positive feedback from potential clients and connections who viewed my profile, saw my Skills & Expertise and endorsements, and commented that they were impressed. While I would never hire or expect to be hired on the basis of these endorsements, they seem to provide some value, and no harm.

And there's always the Secret benefit to LinkedIn Endorsements that I've written about before and mention in the article.

So what about you? Do you accept and give out endorsements? Do you think they add any value at all to your profile? If not, what about them is detracting from your professional LinkedIn image?

Thanks for your comments!
