5 Steps to Win the Content Marketing Marathon

5 Steps to Win the Content Marketing Marathon | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Content marketing is a marathon. You start excited and energetic, writing away at lightning speed, dodging and weaving around slower, inferior competitors. Then you hit mile 12. Find out how to win here.
Mike Allton's insight:

Win the Content Marketing Marathon

"The thirst you feel in your throat and lungs will be gone minutes after the race is over. The pain in your legs within days, but the glory of your finish will last forever." ~ Unknown

Content Marketing is a marathon. You start excited and energetic, writing away at lightning speed, dodging and weaving around slower, inferior competitors.

Then you hit mile 12.

And suddenly your legs feel like lead. Your thighs burn and your feet seem to be moving in wet sand.

You run out of ideas. You stare at an empty content calendar and scribble “infographic?” with no real optimism.

This insightful piece by +James Scherer will give you the five important steps you need to take to win the content marketing marathon.

1. Start Conditioning
2. Stretch Before You Run
3. Start With Small Steps
4. Pace Yourself
5. Push Through The Wall

And while I have never run a marathon, I have participated in grueling bike rides called centuries that are very similar. One in particular, the Tour Of the Scioto River Valley (TOSRV), begins in Columbus, OH on Saturday and follows a 105 mile course to Portsmouth on the banks of the Ohio River. On Sunday, you make your way back, achieving 210 miles bicycling in two days. Many fail to finish, or opt only to do one day.

But I didn't just decide to do TOSRV one day. I'd been riding consistently for months... years... and had specifically trained that year for this event by doing 100-mile rides on Sundays and 30-mile sprints on Wednesday evenings to build up strength and stamina. I had hit the Wall numerous times and learned how to push through it.

And that's exactly how it is with blogging.

When I first started blogging, I didn't begin by creating two blog posts a day. I was lucky to write one a month! But over time, I got better and better, and adopted many of the techniques and best practices that James outlines here.

So take a look at what it takes to win the Content Marketing Marathon and think about how you can adopt some of these ideas yourself. Which ones do you do already, and which ones do you think you can start working on now?

Using User Profile & Social Data to Drive Deeper Digital Interactions

Using User Profile & Social Data to Drive Deeper Digital Interactions | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
User profile and social data helps to optimize a marketing campaign by supplying critical consumer information to brands, and can be used to personalize efforts to communicate with their users.
Mike Allton's insight:

Are You Using Social Data?

If you're running a business and website where you can invite site visitors to login, you should strongly consider using social network logins. They offer an easier interface for your users, and can then offer you hundreds of data points for your users.

Use Social Data to:

 - Research prospects
 - Personalize email campaigns
 - Improve lead gen and conversion

Guest contributor +Taylor Nelson explains in more detail how it all works, and why you should have social login integrated into your site and sales process.

Should You Plus Your Own Plus Posts?

Should You Plus Your Own Plus Posts? | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Are people who +1 their own posts on Google+ just being narcissistic? Or is this a brilliant marketing technique that you're going to want to learn more about? (hint, hint)
Mike Allton's insight:

Should You Plus Your Own Plus Posts?

This is a question that comes up rather often. Some of you may not have even known you could, but you can, in fact, +1 your own posts. Even your own comments.

But should you?

Does it do anything more than stroke your own ego?

Clearly, I think you should #GoPlusYourself  (and thanks for that one +Rhonda Green). And if you're interested in understanding my reasons, read on.

But I'm genuinely interested in hearing your own opinion. Have you ever +1'd your own posts? Why, or why not? Does it bother you when other people do it? Or do you, like most users, neither care nor notice?

What NBC’s ‘Hannibal’ Can Teach Us About Social Media Marketing

What NBC’s ‘Hannibal’ Can Teach Us About Social Media Marketing | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Hannibal is a violent, artsy, progressive TV series that delves deep into human psychology and interestingly, it can offer a few insights into how social media marketers should behave.
Mike Allton's insight:

Social Media Marketing lessons, from Hannibal??

You’ve never seen a show quite like NBC’s Hannibal—which may sound like an odd thing to say about a TV program that’s based on a popular film franchise (in particular the classic, Oscar-winning The Silence of the Lambs) which was itself based on a series of books. Familiar though this world might be, the creative team led by Bryan Fuller (of the short-lived but wonderful show Pushing Daisies) has brought it to life in a way few could have imagined. You may have seen the movies and read the novels, but this show is unrecognizable, with a style—trippy, druggy, psychedelic, way out there—that’s unlike anything else on TV.

And if you’ll pardon the stretch… +Josh Hurst also thinks the show can offer a few insights into how social media marketers should behave.

Let me know once you've sunk your teeth into this one...

LinkedIn Launches Cover Photos for Premium Members

LinkedIn Launches Cover Photos for Premium Members | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Following in the footsteps of the other major networks, LinkedIn has finally implemented the ubiquitous "cover photo." LinkedIn Premium Members can now upload a 1400 x 425 cover image.
Mike Allton's insight:

LinkedIn Adds Cover Photos FINALLY!

LinkedIn continues to lag behind most of the other social networks in adopting features and functionality that users demand cross-platform. Mentions, for instance, were finally added, but are still extremely limited, and we're still waiting for hashtag support.

But today, LinkedIn Premium members do get to take advantage of a nice improvement to their personal profile: A Cover Photo.

Weighing in at a whopping 1400 x 425, it's very similar in size to Twitter's new cover photos. But there are some complications with placement that will make creating custom cover photos a bit of a challenge, so be sure to read the notes below.

What do you think? Does it irk you that this is for Premium (paid) members only? Or is this a great benefit to membership that'll make you think about upgrading?

Great Examples of World Cup Marketing

How to Navigate B2B and B2C Social Media Marketing | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Not sure whether to use Twitter for B2B or LinkedIn for B2C? Read on to learn how you can utilise social media marketing no matter who your audience is.
Mike Allton's insight:

Navigating B2B and B2C Social Media Marketing

For B2B and B2C marketers, social media often feels like it will never settle down. Just as marketers get comfortable with sites like MySpace, Digg and Flickr, new social networking sites pop up and change the face of social media marketing, leaving marketers in both camps annoyed and without a map.

Still, social media marketing can be highly effective, though varies greatly depending on whether you're promoting B2B or B2C. Different platforms and tactics are far more successful depending on which type of marketing you're performing.

Not sure whether to use Twitter for B2B or LinkedIn for B2C? Read on to learn from +Michael Bird how you can utilise social media marketing no matter who your audience is.

Feature and Share Comments To Build Brand Community

Feature and Share Comments To Build Brand Community | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Despite the raging debate on whether to allow comments or not, many of us still do. And for those that do, comments from readers can be used in a couple of ways to build community even further.
Mike Allton's insight:

What To Do With Comments?

If you've been blogging for a while, you've probably started to get some great comments on your posts from your readers. And those comments are fantastic for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is providing a mechanism for you to actually connect with your readers on your blog, and take those relationships further.

But what else can you do with them?

You might not have considered it, but when you have a particularly good comment on one of your blog posts, it can be extremely powerful to feature that comment for other readers, and to even share it to your social channels for your other followers to read and jump in.

Featuring and Sharing comments from your blog and readers is a great way to build community! Learn how in today's post! And if you've been doing this, or have other ideas on how to use comments, throw 'em out here in the comments!

Thanks, and have a great weekend!
