See All Your New Followers in a HootSuite Stream

See All Your New Followers in a HootSuite Stream | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
HootSuite has added a new stream for your HootSuite Dashboard called New Followers, in which you can see the most recent people who have followers your Twitter account. But there's more to it...
Mike Allton's insight:

How can you quickly gauge interest in new Twitter followers?

Do you pay attention when someone new follows you on Twitter? If you're monitoring your branded business account, you probably should. It would be nice to know when a colleague or influencer, or even a potential client followed you and by that action, expressed some interest in your business, right?

The thing is, how do you know what kind of potential relationship that new follower might represent? You can click your follower list in Twitter and see their names and faces, and then dig down deeper if one stands out - but there is a better way.

Using your HootSuite Dashboard, you can now set up a stream just for New Followers. But since it's more than just a list of Twitter handles and profile pics, it's so much more powerful and useful. Within moments, you'll be able to identify who a new follower is, their potential reasons for following you, whether or not they're following any of your other Twitter accounts, and more. You can quickly follow them back with any of your connected accounts, and look for opportunities to take the new relationship in a positive level.

For instance, if it looks like a new follower may be a potential customer, you might glance through their recent tweets to see if they've been asking questions regarding issues that your business can help resolve, or perhaps send them a quick message thanking them for following you and inquiring if they have any specific questions.

Check out the details of this new feature, and let me know if you have any questions at all!

Thanks!

When You Should (And Shouldn't) Use a WordPress Plugin

When You Should (And Shouldn't) Use a WordPress Plugin | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Using plugins habitually can get to be a major problem for your page, with one of the worst being increased loading time which can lead to lower search rankings. Here's how to evaluate plugins.
Mike Allton's insight:

Are you using too many WordPress plugins?

WordPress is a great tool for running a blog and business website, but it's easy to get caught up in all the fun gizmos and gadgets you can add via plugins. Understand that adding too many plugins comes with a price! They may be free to install (or maybe not), but there are additional risks to your site and search engine rankings to be concerned about.

Guest contributor +Camille McClane takes us through some of the basic thought processes that need to occur each time you're considering a plugin, or approaching a need that you think might require a plugin. She also has a few recommendations for great plugins that could be considered essential, and which do the job of several others.

If you're using WordPress now for your site, what are some of your own favorite plugins, and why? Do you have a specific cap on the number of plugins you will install, or do you play it by ear?

Thanks!

Google Turns Hangouts into Complete Communication Tool

Google Turns Hangouts into Complete Communication Tool | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
With the update, Hangout users can use the app to call any phone number within the US or Canada for free with their iPhone, iPad or even iPod Touch.
Mike Allton's insight:

Free Phone Calls using Google Hangouts

Over the weekend, Google gave Hangout users on iOS devices the ability to call anyone in the U.S. or Canada for free. You can also see who's online and available for a Hangout, and direct dial or call up phone numbers from your phone's contacts.

What, if any, impact do you think this has on Skype? Will you use Google Hangouts to make phone calls on WiFi instead of using a cellular plan? Could that even allow some people to reduce their cell plans to cheape levels, if they do a lot of calling from a WiFi device anyways?

Check out the full details of the update in the article below.

Why Real Estate Agents Should Have Community Pages and How to Promote Them

Why Real Estate Agents Should Have Community Pages and How to Promote Them | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Community Pages are a great way for realtors to help new residents and families looking to relocate. Find out what should be in your Community Page and how to get visitors to it.
Mike Allton's insight:

Community Pages + Social Media = Real Estate Success

One of the first tasks I advise any of my real estate clients to do is to begin to create a resource within their website that provides valuable information about the geographic area they serve: school districts, demographics, housing values and more. They're referred to as Community Pages, and +Bill Gassett has some great examples on his website.

What's impressed me even more is the job that Bill is doing to give his Community Pages maximum exposure on social networks, particularly Pinterest, Google+ and SlideShare.

This technique is ideally suited for real estate agents and brokers, but may also apply to other businesses that target specific geographic areas. Businesses might use such a page to talk about their service area, reference specific partners or vendors in the area, and provide links and information to relevant local resources, government offices, etc.

Do you use or can you use a Community Page in your business? If so, please take a look at this article: Why Real Estate Agents Should Have Community Pages and How to Promote Them.

Successfully Connect to Customers in 6 Seconds or Less with Vines

Successfully Connect to Customers in 6 Seconds or Less with Vines | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
With only six seconds or less to capture video and turn it into a Vine, small businesses and micro-entrepreneurs can attract new customers and keep their current ones one video at a time.
Mike Allton's insight:

Connect with Customers in 6 Seconds or Less

Many people initially saw vines and instagram videos, with their insanely brief time spans, as being useless for business and serious marketing. Yet, months later, we're seeing some extraordinary use cases and examples. Have they required some creativity and out of the box thinking? Absolutely.

Today's article may change your thinking when it comes to Vines. Perhaps you could use Vines to give your customers behind the scenes looks into your business and processes. Or maybe you can use them for quick testimonials or product demonstrations.

Are you using Vines yet? If not, what's holding you back?

Enjoy your Monday!

Google+ Must Be A Ghost Town

Google+ Must Be A Ghost Town | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Many people come to Google+ expecting to find Google's version of Facebook or Twitter or Pinterest. They look for their friends or a specific experience and, finding none, consider it lost. But is it?
Mike Allton's insight:

Google+ Must Be A Ghost Town

+Jeremy Smith is absolutely right. Google+ is a ghost town, isn't it? I'm sure no one will read this, no one will comment on it, no one will share or click through to the article. There's no one here.

Yet many of us know that's far from the truth.

As Jeremy points out in today's guest blog, the perception is flawed because many people, businesses and organizations come to Google+ with flawed expectations. Instead of taking a moment to understand what Google+ is about and how their social media strategy needs to change to fit this different ecosystem.

As someone once said, Facebook is for connecting with the people you already know, Google+ is for connecting with the people you should know.

If you still feel like Google+ is quiet and empty... check out Jeremy's post and give his suggestions a try. And if you have questions on how to get more out of the network, let us know!

View Twitter Relationships within HootSuite

View Twitter Relationships within HootSuite | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
What HootSuite has now incorporated into your dashboard is the ability to see whether or not someone is following you, or any other Twitter profiles you happen to have connected.
Mike Allton's insight:

HootSuite New Feature: Relationships

+HootSuite is the process of implementing a number of new features that were churned out during a 2-day hackathon. The latest is the ability to check out someone's profile card within HootSuite and see not only their Bio and other information, but whether or not they're following you or any other account you have connected to your HootSuite dashboard.

What's the Big Deal?

While it's certainly nice to be able to see whether or not someone's following you, what's so impressive and useful is that this update continues to make the HootSuite dashboard and profile card system an invaluable tool for Influencer Marketing. Namely, being able to identify and connect with influencers, and monitor the success of your efforts.

For more information on the new feature, and how we can use the HootSuite dashboard to engage influencers, check out this afternoon's story.

Thanks!

The gloves are off, Email VS Mobile

The gloves are off, Email VS Mobile | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
If you’re wondering which is more responsive, more effective, more convenient and which is flourishing and growing, then this article hopes to answer some of those questions.
Mike Allton's insight:

Which is better, Email or Mobile Marketing?

First, today's article does not represent an ultimate answer to this question. Rather, guest author and SMS expert Jake Jeffries from +Text Marketer Ltd attempts to break down the current statistics, pro's and con's, for both methods of marketing so that you might gain some insight into which method is better for your business and marketing needs.

For instance, it is estimated that there are over 6 billion mobile phones in active use, as compared to 3.6 billion active email accounts. Yet a growing and now dominant percentage of people use their mobile phones to check email, so is it a wash? Should we be focusing on creating email marketing campaigns that are more responsive?

Jake asks some compelling questions, and if you're currently using these methods to reach customers, or are considering it, there's compelling data here that needs to be looked at. Jake also includes a great infograph comparing the data.

If you have any questions at all about email or mobile marketing, please leave them in the comments below for Jake or I, and I can bring in other experts like +Stephan Hovnanian as well.

My Experience with Nster: An Effective Tool for Site Monetization

My Experience with Nster: An Effective Tool for Site Monetization | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Nster offers a very interesting option for bloggers and publishers, both for website traffic and for growing revenue. Instead of display ads, offer your visitors dynamic links to other stories.
Mike Allton's insight:

Looking for ways to monetize your blog?

For most bloggers, making money from their blog is definitely a goal. Putting display ads around the content and recommending affiliate products are two time-honored techniques that I use myself. But interestingly, they're not the only options.

A growing segment and option for site monetization is that of content networks. Which, given the current state of content marketing frenzy, shouldn't be surprising.

What's a Content Network?

At it's simplest form, a content network might seem similar to the banner exchanges of old. Publishing sites have their content displayed on other sites, and potentially display other site's content on theirs. The comment system Disqus now offers a content discovery system, and I've recently found and wrote about a similar service called Nster.

The idea is simple: you can display content on your site and have your content displayed on other sites to generate more site traffic - or you can choose to display other people's content only and monetize it; get paid for clicks on the stories you share.

If you're interested in driving more traffic to your site or monetizing the traffic you're getting, this is a service you're going to be interested in.

Good luck!
