HootSuite App Updated with Timesavers

HootSuite App Updated with Timesavers | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
The mobile app for the HootSuite social media management dashboard received a major update today that will save users time, and may also pave the way for future upgrades.
Mike Allton's insight:

HootSuite Adds Social Network Sync

The social media management tool +HootSuite has released an update for their iOS app today that makes it so that now, when you log into the app, your social networks are synced automatically with the web dashboard. Previously, you had to set up the networks on the app manually.

This, along with some other updates, suggests some interesting changes which may be in store for the service!

Are you using HootSuite already? If so, what do you think?

Social Media Active Users by Network [INFOGRAPH]

Social Media Active Users by Network [INFOGRAPH] | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
One of the most common questions from both businesses and social media marketers is "how many?" How many users. How many people. How many opportunities - for each of the social networks. Here are updated Active User Counts.
Mike Allton's insight:

Social Media Active Users (UPDATED!)

Yesterday, in their quarterly financial release, Twitter reported a nice increase in active monthly users, up to 271 million from 250 back in April.

On the other hand, Facebook reported last month that their active monthly usage was 1.07 billion - down significantly from the 1.28 billion previously reported.

Since our last usage data for YouTube was in March of 2013, it's quite possible that YouTube's reported 1 billion monthly actives is stale and that the video giant has passed Facebook as the most active social network.

I will continue to monitor and update this post and corresponding graphics as each network reports new numbers. For more information, including an updated infograph with Facebook, YouTube, Google+, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Vine data, the complete article is below.

Enjoy!

How to Delegate Facebook Advertising

How to Delegate Facebook Advertising | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Effective Facebook advertising requires extensive knowledge of Facebook ad types, best practices and more. If you're going to use an Ad Manager, here's how to give them access.
Mike Allton's insight:

Don't Give Your Facebook Password to Account Managers

Facebook ads are one of the most powerful and effective forms of paid advertising available, but that power comes with a price, above and beyond the cost of the ads.

The small business owner can either spend the requisite time needed to master the Ads Manager and associated advertising techniques, or hire a campaign manager to do it for them.

As a social media advertising consultant, I spend a considerable amount of time working with clients to help develop the best possible ad campaigns on Facebook, Twitter and elsewhere. But I often run into business owners who have provided previous managers with access to their personal Facebook profiles so they can manage their ads.

You don't have to do that.

This article will walk you through designating a campaign manager for your Facebook ad campaign without giving them the "keys to the kingdom." It also reviews how to set up your billing, and some basic best practices when it comes to Facebook advertising.

Too much.

These are 8 areas in which many of us can improve our writing. For most, it's probably the lack of having an overall plan and strategy. while you may not have to have a full=blown editorial calendar, you certainly need to have a schedule for publishing and clear idea of the kind of content you need to produce in order to sustain your business and content marketing strategy.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup fever is upon us, and while the fans are soaking themselves in the madness, the brands from different realms are making serious efforts to cash in on the frenzy.
Mike Allton's insight:

Great Examples of World Cup Marketing

Good marketing campaigns take advantage of trends and events, and the 2014 FIFA World Cup is no exception. Last weekend, we happened to grabbing lunch at our local Mexican restaurant and their TVs were streaming the current match in Spanish. Every commercial was linked to the World Cup, from insurance to prenatal care.

Mike Allton's insight:

Over the years, when asked where my clients and readers should publish their content, my response has always been on their own website. It’s imperative, I’ve argued, that you own your own content. And if that content has been published elsewhere, you won’t own it, you won’t control the reader experience, and you won’t be able to leverage that content as fully as you might on your own site.

So am I being wishy washy when I tell you that you should be publishing to LinkedIn?

How to Create a Branded Short Link

How to Create a Branded Short Link | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
By using your own custom branded short link, you reinforce your brand awareness, as well as ensure that you're taking full advantage of all the benefits shortened links offer. Learn how!
Mike Allton's insight:

How to Create a Branded Short Link

Short links. The internet is full of 'em. Over the past ten years, they've become ingrained into every aspect of our online lives. TinyURL's and Goo.gl's and Bit.ly's and more. Each one promising quick, abbreviated access to wonderful news and information.

But what if you could do more?

What if you could not only use such links to track effectiveness of your social shares and online activity, but also communicate brand at the same time?

We're talking about using custom branded short links -- URLs that reflect your business name in some way, rather than a random third-party service. Using TheSMH.co instead of bit.ly, for instance.

Today's article walks you through what shortened URLs are, what you can do with them, and how you too can set up your own branded shortener that can be used by Bit.ly, Buffer and more.

5 Steps to Win the Content Marketing Marathon

5 Steps to Win the Content Marketing Marathon | The Content Marketing Hat | Scoop.it
Content marketing is a marathon. You start excited and energetic, writing away at lightning speed, dodging and weaving around slower, inferior competitors. Then you hit mile 12. Find out how to win here.
Mike Allton's insight:

Win the Content Marketing Marathon

"The thirst you feel in your throat and lungs will be gone minutes after the race is over. The pain in your legs within days, but the glory of your finish will last forever." ~ Unknown

Content Marketing is a marathon. You start excited and energetic, writing away at lightning speed, dodging and weaving around slower, inferior competitors.

Then you hit mile 12.

And suddenly your legs feel like lead. Your thighs burn and your feet seem to be moving in wet sand.

You run out of ideas. You stare at an empty content calendar and scribble “infographic?” with no real optimism.

This insightful piece by +James Scherer will give you the five important steps you need to take to win the content marketing marathon.

1. Start Conditioning
2. Stretch Before You Run
3. Start With Small Steps
4. Pace Yourself
5. Push Through The Wall

And while I have never run a marathon, I have participated in grueling bike rides called centuries that are very similar. One in particular, the Tour Of the Scioto River Valley (TOSRV), begins in Columbus, OH on Saturday and follows a 105 mile course to Portsmouth on the banks of the Ohio River. On Sunday, you make your way back, achieving 210 miles bicycling in two days. Many fail to finish, or opt only to do one day.

But I didn't just decide to do TOSRV one day. I'd been riding consistently for months... years... and had specifically trained that year for this event by doing 100-mile rides on Sundays and 30-mile sprints on Wednesday evenings to build up strength and stamina. I had hit the Wall numerous times and learned how to push through it.

And that's exactly how it is with blogging.

When I first started blogging, I didn't begin by creating two blog posts a day. I was lucky to write one a month! But over time, I got better and better, and adopted many of the techniques and best practices that James outlines here.

So take a look at what it takes to win the Content Marketing Marathon and think about how you can adopt some of these ideas yourself. Which ones do you do already, and which ones do you think you can start working on now?
