Why might your Dr have missed your B12 Deficiency?
Welcome to the section of the website that has been produced for Medical Professionals.
We have identified that there are serious problems with the way in which vitamin B12 deficiency in general, and Pernicious Anaemia in particular is diagnosed. Our survey of over 1,200 members show that around 14% waited over ten years for a diagnosis. Around 20% waited over two years to be told what was the cause of their symptoms. Before being diagnosed as having Pernicious Anaemia our members were often told that they were suffering from depression or chronic fatigue syndrome.
There are also serious issues with treatment with the usually prescribed three monthly injection of Hydroxocobalamin in the UK being insufficient for a great many members who then find alternative sources of B12 and supplement their treatment often without the knowledge or consent of their doctor.
This society wants to work with the medical fraternity to address these serious problems. If you would like to help us in this task please get in touch.
B12 deficiency isn't exciting - and there's no money attached. B12 can't be patented, it has been around for decades and it is cheap to manufacture (90% of the world's manufactured B12 is injected into farm animals).
B12 unme's insight:
Your Dr recieved little training in nutrition at Medical school. Deadly B12 Deficiency is widely thought to be a condition of the past or found in the elderly. This is wrong. B12d is widely prevalent in the younger generations. When diagnosed early and correctly treated, chances of a relatively normal life and life expectancy are excellent. Treatment for malabsorption of B12 is usually lifelong.
Check yourself for B12d here but important to see GP for confirmation.
The table below allows you to enter your signs and symptoms and immediately read off your B12 deficiency status (in the boxes at the start and end).
