Diagnosing and Treating Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Vitamin B12 deficiency can sneak up on you, and can lead to a myriad of diseases and disorders. Know the signs and symptoms. You could be deficient yet still...
B12 unme's insight:

Please share this informative Documentary. We have undiagnosed people to find. Do you have B12 Deficiency? A self-check by NHS GP Dr Joseph Chandy here: http://www.b12d.org/ If you suspect B12 Deficiency, please see your GP for assessment. Correction of B12 Deficiency needs high dose Vitamin B12 injections and professional investigation as to the cause. Supplementing before GP assessment reduces your chance of diagnosis.

All forms of B12 Deficiency, with the exception of a corrected Dietary deficiency, need B12 replacement treatment life-long.

Please note B12 Deficiency is found in all age groups and is common in meat eaters, vegans, vegetarians alike. It is a serious but correctable condition that needs to be diagnosed in its early stages to have best chance of avoiding permanent damage to the central nervous system.

B12 unme's insight:
Welcome to the section of the website that has been produced for Medical Professionals.

We have identified that there are serious problems with the way in which vitamin B12 deficiency in general, and Pernicious Anaemia in particular is diagnosed.  Our survey of over 1,200 members show that around 14% waited over ten years for a diagnosis.  Around 20% waited over two years to be told what was the cause of their symptoms.   Before being diagnosed as having Pernicious Anaemia our members were often told that they were suffering from depression or chronic fatigue syndrome.

There are also serious issues with treatment with the usually prescribed three monthly injection of Hydroxocobalamin in the UK being insufficient for a great many members who then find alternative sources of B12 and supplement their treatment often without the knowledge or consent of their doctor.

This society wants to work with the medical fraternity to address these serious problems.  If you would like to help us in this task please get in touch.

Why are many doctors missing this? | B12 deficiency Support Group (Reg Charity 1146432)

B12 deficiency isn't exciting - and there's no money attached.  B12 can't be patented, it has been around for decades and it is cheap to manufacture (90% of the world's manufactured B12 is injected into farm animals).
B12 unme's insight:

Your Dr recieved little training in nutrition at Medical school. Deadly B12 Deficiency is widely thought to be a condition of the past or found in the elderly.  This is wrong. B12d is widely prevalent in the younger generations. When diagnosed early and correctly treated, chances of a relatively normal life and life expectancy are excellent. Treatment for malabsorption of B12 is usually lifelong.

Check yourself for B12d here but important to see GP for confirmation.

The table below allows you to enter your signs and symptoms and immediately read off your B12 deficiency status (in the boxes at the start and end).
B12 unme's insight:

NHS GP, Dr Joesph Chandy together with Hugo Minney Phd have created an easy five minute self-check for B12 Deficiency.

It is important to seek confirmation from your Doctor as chances of timely diagnosis of this serious condition are reduced if you choose to supplement first. Please be aware a B12 Deficiency needs correction by loading doses of Vitamin B12 by injection.

Early diagnosis and treatment according to individual need means patients have an excellent chance of avoiding the more serious symptoms of this debilitating multi-system, poly glandular, multi-point syndrome.

Any questions may be directed to The Pernicious Anaemia Society. There are also closed Facebook groups aligned to both charities, PAS and B12d.org. Details on the respective sites.
