Sheryl Lazarov wishes she had been exposed to alternative ways of thinking about her health while she was growing up in Memphis. Recently, she returned to the Mid-South armed with the knowledge she sought, and hoping to offer Memphians some of the opportunities for healing she did not have. Lazarov opened an Ayurvedic practice, Kiran Ayurveda, offering private consultations out of her home and workshops at East Memphis' Better Bodies Yoga.
Cancer is the most dreaded of all diseases, and ever since a “war on cancer” was declared forty years ago, massive research has made progress, although the battle is far from won. Very little of this research has been directed at prevention. Advanced medicine, like the person on the street, has tended to think of cancer as something we have no control over: it happens to us or it doesn’t. https://t.co/LDVvAeEY...)...

Rice builds ojas. Ojas is said to have the smell of burnt rice. Of rices, Basmati is the most sattvic and aromatic.
Rice is nourishing and easy to digest giving more 'bang for the buck'. Rice offers more calories with less effort from digestive organs. Plain rice is a good late night snack that wont disturb agni. Strained water from cooked rice can be made into a gruel. It is a valuable food for those recovering from an illness and a cornerstone of samsarjana karma. Brown rice, although nutritionally superior, is harder to digest than white rice.
All rice can be drying for vata if cooked 'al dente' without enough water. For vata, add extra water and cook the rice until soft and puffy.
Stephen Hawking occupies a position in popular culture comparable only to Einstein's eminence sixty years ago: he is our last wise man speaking with the total authority of advanced science. Until his new book, The Grand Design, appeared, co-authored with Caltech physics professor (and adept writer) Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking had left open the whisper of a possibility that God might be allowed to survive scientific scrutiny. Einstein had a strong feeling for the presence of awe and wonder at the far horizon of the cosmos and saw evidence for the existence of a unifying, rational presence in the mathematical order of the cosmos.
Traditional medical systems such as Ayurveda and Chinese medicine (TCM) are fundamentally systems of eco-physiology, which describe the functioning of the human body using terms and concepts derived from observing the elements and energetic patterns of planetary biospheric physiology. If students contemplate these principles deeply, they begin to develop a kind of macro-thinking that reveals not just the basic elemental correspondences taught in Ayurvedic and TCM colleges, but vast patterns of interrelationships between living beings and the underlying commonalities of biological functions. When this type of synthetic and integrative thinking is combined with an understanding, even rudimentary, of botany, physiology, and chemistry, a truly holistic vision of life emerges. A holistic vision of life awakens a sense of reverence for the intelligence operating within every aspect of nature, and this awakening in turn is the foundation of spiritual wisdom.
The subject of prana is an excellent contemplation for developing the type of macro-thinking that forms the basis of Ayurvedic philosophy. Functioning both at the universal and at the microscopic level, prana unites all life into a unified field yet functions in specific ways within the anatomy, physiology and consciousness of living beings. Any aspect of life could be the entry point for this contemplation, as we could examine the nature of prana in any field of science or in any path of spiritual study and practice.

The aim of Ayurvedic medicine is to integrate and balance the body, mind, and spirit. This is believed to help prevent illness and promote wellness.
Ayurvedic medicine uses a variety of products and techniques to cleanse the body and restore balance. Some of these products may be harmful if used improperly or without the direction of a trained practitioner. for example, some herbs can cause side effects or interact with conventional medicines.
Before using Ayurvedic treatment, ask about the practitioner's training and experience.
Tell your health care providers about any complementary and alternative practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.
Beauticians or skin disease specialists will usually prescribe an expensive medicine such as a cream or lotion to treat itchy, scaly skin, or scalp problems. However, a bottle of almond oil could be the solution of all those problems mentioned above.

IN AYURVEDA, high blood pressure is called Rekthasammardha (pronounced Rek-tha sam-mart-tha in Sanskrit), which literally means blood pressure.
"There are two categories of high blood pressure - one is related to the heart and family history, and the other is a symptom of many other diseases, like kidney disease, diabetes or cancer (for instance when it causes pain or obstructs certain pathways of our blood circulation)," says ayurvedic physician Dr C.D. Siby.
The plant Tulsi or Holy Basil (Botanical name Ocimum Sanctum ) belongs to family Lamiaceae. It is a tropical plant which grows as weed and also cultivated. Tulsi is worshipped by Hindus and is an important symbol of Hindu religion. It is a very common sight to find Tulsi Vrindavan ( A special structure where tulsi is grown) in houses of Hindus.
The tulsi shrub is an erect plant which grows to a height of 50 to 60 cm tall. It has hairy stems, opposite ovate leaves and purple flowers. Leaves have strong scent. There are two types of tulsi
1. Krishna tulsi – Has purple leaves 2. Shri tulsi – Has Green leaves
Texts of ayurveda describe the properties of tulsi as follows. It is light to digest and dries tissue secretions. Tulsi tastes hot and bitter. It can penetrate deep tissues and has anti helmenthic properties. Due to these properties it normalizes kapha and vata. Leaves, flowers, seeds and roots of Tulsi are used in ayurvedic preparations.

The ancient science of Ayurveda divides the human body into three categories — Vata, Pitta and Kapha — and each is governed by an element of nature or a combination of them, giving us an individual body metabolism.
"According to Ayurveda, our bodies have a dosha based on its constitution and our lifestyle and other factors affect it," says Dr Chandy George, Ayurvedic lifestyle consultant at Balance Wellness Club in Dubai. "Nature and the human body are governed by the five elements — earth, water, air, space and fire. The combinations of these elemental energies define the three major body types — Vata (space and air), Pitta (fire) and Kapha (earth and water). These categories are called the tri doshas, which are often imbalanced on account of external factors, both physical and mental, leading to illness. However, these can be rectified through awareness about what one's dosha is and with lifestyle changes".
