I examine in this paper the role of shamanism and its ritual performances as expressions of cultural distinctiveness in the face of Colonial and post-Colonial violence that has plagued the Putumayo region of southern Colombia since the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th Century. As a response to missionary activities and territorial and population changes, shamanic rituals based on the consumption of yajé, or ayahuasca, became an important mechanism of community organization and resistance to external control and by the 20th Century, the shaman emerged as the political and spiritual leader known as cacique curaca. However, this centralized role as community protector and provider entered in to near total collapse in the 1960s, when yajé rituals ceased and petroleum extraction brought with it the migration of thousands of colonists from the Andean highlands into the region. However, shamanic practices have undergone a complete reversal over the last three decades and shamans and their yajé rituals are the center of resilience and survival in a region permeated by armed violence and characterized as a “war-zone”. I analyze how shamanism, as a mode of cultural performance, promotes ethnic distinctiveness in contemporary struggles for the claiming and securing of Indigenous rights. Within the context of the Putumayo and recognition of indigenous peoples rights in the Constitution of 1992, shamanism is associated with traditional medicine, ethnic identity and community well-being, and the performance of shamanism occupies a central role in the complex field of negotiations between Indigenous communities, the State, non-governmental organizations, extractive industries and the diverse armed groups (paramilitaries, drug traffickers, military and guerrillas).
