A day at the office: meet the modern-day shamans of Lake Baikal

A day at the office: meet the modern-day shamans of Lake Baikal | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it
“You don’t become a shaman, you’re picked,” says Mikhail Orgonov, one of the “chosen” few in the Baikal region that also feature in Alina Desyatnichenko's series on the subject. The Krasnodar-based photographer travelled to Siberia in the winter of 2015-16, though her fascination with shamanism started across the world in Mexico a few years previously. Shamanism is the world’s oldest spiritual practice, and anyone picked for the job must mediate between the material and the spiritual worlds and perform healing rituals. Organov, who spent many years in the police force, comes from ten generations of shamans. Desyatnichenko spoke to others who were previously janitors, nurses and carers. “With the emergence of New Age culture, Lake Baikal is increasingly presented in guidebooks as the sacred centre of the shaman’s world. Amulets, totems and ‘real shaman drums’ are in demand in local souvenir shops,”

Wild men: the ancient pagan ritual that still thrives in rural Bulgaria

Wild men: the ancient pagan ritual that still thrives in rural Bulgaria | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it
Kukeri are men who take part in an ancient Bulgarian pagan tradition to scare away the evil spirits of winter. They gather to chant and dance, wearing home-made wooden masks, animal furs, horns and sequins, strapping on heavy belts with bells on that can weigh up to 70kg. The ritual has continued undisturbed through the centuries, even through Communist times when it was tolerated by the state.

Understanding the Kratom Controversy | Hayden Griffin, Ph.D | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it
Face-eating zombies, bulletproof criminals, and rampant death of all involved. These seem to be among the most common media stories floated around when discussing newly discovered or emerging drugs. There is a reason for this: sensationalized media seems to sell. As some media ebbs from respected journalism to the blogosphere, these reports may be occurring more frequently.  Within criminology and sociology, there is even a term to describe such media events: “moral panic,” which is used to describe a media overreaction to a seemingly mundane, or at least exaggerated, event.1

Is Ibogaine Treatment in Brazil Finally Stepping Out From the Underground?

Is Ibogaine Treatment in Brazil Finally Stepping Out From the Underground? | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it
Ibogaine, like other psychedelics, such as MDMA, ayahuasca, and psilocybin, has been shown to have important medicinal values. It is extracted from an African root and, besides its powerful mind-altering effects, it really appears to help people to quit drug abuse, sometimes after a single session, or, in less successful cases, helps stabilizing their use. This appears to happen with opiates, stimulants like cocaine and crack cocaine, alcohol, and even with process addictions, like gambling or eating disorders. For example ibogaine commonly stops cravings and withdrawal symptoms of opiate addiction in around 24–36 hours.

The Psychedelia Podcast: Interview with Rev Danny Nemu - The Third Wave | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it
Our guest is Reverend Danny Nemu, historian and author. He talks to us about drugs in the bible – and how priests used them to induce divine visions. It’s surprising how many natural substances mentioned in the bible are psychoactive, and were almost certainly used for their mind-altering properties. We also discuss how drug stigma has changed since biblical times, and what it means for the future of psychedelics.

Salvador Roquet Remembered: An Innovative Psychedelic Therapist in 1960s Mexico

Salvador Roquet Remembered: An Innovative Psychedelic Therapist in 1960s Mexico | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it
Dr. Salvador Roquet was a Mexican pioneer in psychedelic psychotherapy. He began his medical career in the field of public health and later became a psychiatrist; he started to use mind-altering substances as an adjunct to psychotherapy in 1967. His psychedelic sessions lasted about eight hours and included patients taking such substances as LSD, ketamine, psilocybin mushrooms, and ololiuqui seeds (morning glory seeds) such as Rivea corymbosa and Ipomea violacea. Salvador was widely acclaimed for developing a series of innovative therapeutic methods for using these substances. Yet, in today’s world of psychedelic psychotherapy, he is relatively unknown. Let me share some of his story with you.

DMT and the Mysteries of Hyperspace Travel | Graham St. John, Ph.D

DMT and the Mysteries of Hyperspace Travel | Graham St. John, Ph.D | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it
Known to produce profound changes in sensory perception, mood, and thought, DMT is commonly smoked using crystal vaporizing methods, or blended with other herbs, as in “changa”.1 Whether explained as travails through parallel universes, odysseys in other dimensions, or journeys to the psychic antipodes, the vicissitudes of travel are implicit to DMT hyperspace, the passage through which is often embraced as a “breakthrough” experience. Like returned travellers, “psychonauts” familiar with this experience report passage into a “space” that may be shockingly alien or uncannily familiar, and possesses a deep quality of reality or realness.

On the Moral Problem of Psychedelics and the Mental Health Problem of Morality

On the Moral Problem of Psychedelics and the Mental Health Problem of Morality | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it
A passage in Lao Tze’s Tao Te Ching states that when original harmony was lost, laws were created. I am sure that this is congruent with our contemporary knowledge of prehistory: We were equalitarian at the time when we were nomadic hunter-gatherers, while our modern political institutions of legislation and justice fail to give us justice or well being. Thus, it would seem that we should interest ourselves very much in that “original harmony” that our laws seek in vain to restore.

I have heard many, many accounts from people who have had challenging, confusing, and straight out traumatic experiences. Part of that is our filter, I get that. Some of us are so lost in our stories of trauma, we project them on everyone we meet.

But there are some seriously rogue "healers" out there, and this deserves to be called out.
