The Weight of the Nation & Obesity Prevention [INFOGRAPHIC]

Americans know they are fat. A staggering two-thirds of adults and one-third of children in the United States are overweight or obese, hampering the overall productivity and health of the nation. Obesity-related illness treatments cost an estimated $190.2 billion annually, for example, which is 21 percent of annual medical spending in the United States. Researchers project this will only get worse, estimating costs will rise to $549.5 billion by 2030, according to a report in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Businesses also suffer, facing an approximate $4.3 billion in losses as a result of obesity-related absenteeism.

A new report released Monday, “Accelerating Progress in Obesity Prevention: Solving the Weight of the Nation,” by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the health group of the National Academy of Sciences, outlines five obesity prevention actions that can accelerate societal-level prevention, including:

Integrating physical activity into people’s daily lives
Making healthy food and beverage options available everywhere
Transforming marketing and messages about nutrition and activity
Making schools a gateway to healthy weights
Galvanizing employers and health care professionals to support healthy lifestyles
These strategies are the result of an IOM committee assessment of 800 previously published obesity prevention recommendations and associated strategies, mapping how the relationships between these efforts could improve their individual and overall impacts.

A History of Hacktivism [INFOGRAPHIC]

Learn how hacktivism evolved to become a powerful virtual weapon in today's digital age.

Hacktivism has hit its tipping point. The year 2011 had the most hacktivism-related crimes in history.

Hacktivists use digital tools to breach security systems to protest or take a stand on political issues. The New Age hacker is motivated by the pursuit of justice, and is often hard to stop.

On Tuesday, Shawn Henry, an FBI agent who will soon leave his post, told the Wall Street Journal that cyber criminals are too powerful for the government to stop. He also said the U.S.’s current methods for preventing hacks are “unsustainable.”

Hacktivism accounted for the majority of cybercrimes committed in the U.S. last year, according to the 2012 Verzion Data Breach Investigation [PDF]. The report said hacktivism represented 100 million of the 174 million cybercrimes in 2011.

Get Your Electronics Organized [INFOGRAPHICS] | Bundlecity Learning Center

A cluttered life is a stressful life. Studies have shown that getting organized not only improves your time-management skills, but it can even significantly boost your mood. Here are some great organization tips we have put together o help you get the most out of your living space. Using some fun and helpful electronic gadgets out on the market today can really improve the look of your home and help you get more organized.

Hang your flat-screen TV on the wall with a TV wall mount to free up much needed space around your home entertainment center. Consider using a TV/DVD combo. These are great because with both a TV and a DVD player in one unit, you no longer need to store an additional component. To get the best high definition programming possible, consider using an HD over-the-air antenna. Once the TV/DVD combo is securely mounted to the wall, you can consider using an HDMI cable to get the best digital high definition (HD) picture possible.

Now on to cable management. Once you have HDMI cables to connect your devices, you’ll need to keepcord management in mind. Cord coiling is very important in reducing that mess behind your TV. Coiling ensures that you can pack the most cord into the smallest amount of space and still keep things from getting unruly. Cable management is equally as important as it allows you to plug your devices into a surge protector and then stow away the surplus cable. Along the same lines, cable clips are a great multi-purpose tool. They help keep all sizes of cables tidy and untangled.

Now that you have your home theater system organized, you can consider using a digital music docking station as a multi-use tool. A digital music docking station functions as an alarm clock, AM/FM radio and a digital music docking station rolled into one. This product not only plays music but will charge your digital music player or mobile phone while it is docked.

Check out our infographic below. This gives a nice illustration of the various ways you can use the gadgets reviewed in this post to help organize your living space.

How to be the Man (Woman) on LinkedIn [INFOGRAPHIC]

LinkedIn continues to be the only major social network focused exclusively on business professionals. Its not as casual as Facebook and not as flippant as Twitter. Today’s infographic focuses on how to be “the man or woman” on LinkedIn. It includes 10 tips that will help you:

Optimize your profile
Extend your reach
Leverage the tools

All three are equally important if you want to drive new business from Linkedin.
If you have a great profile and no one sees it you’ve accomplished nothing. If you have a great network and belong to several groups you’ll still miss out on opportunities if your profile is lacking. Finally, if you are using the available tools such as Answers, Polls, Status Updates, etc. but still have a poor profile, you may drive people back to your inadequate profile, but you’ll likely find that you have nothing to show for your work.

Your profile is the hub of your Linkedin existence. Its your landing page. It should tell people who you are, what you do, how you help people, where they can get more information, and even how to take the next step if they want to engage you or your products and services.

Next I would start naturally building your connections. Connect to you natural network, to people you meet at networking events, and even reach out to those you would like to know. Start looking for groups to join such as:

Those where potential your customers or clients are
Industry related groups where you can make connections that can become partners, vendors, or referral sources

Alumni groups, whether corporate or school based, where you can reconnect to old friends or find new ones
Topic related groups where you can expand your knowledge
A group that you start and grow
Finally, kick start your activity by answering questions to help others and demonstrate your knowledge, engage in group discussions by joining existing conversations or start your own, post status update to share content, ask questions, or share success stories, and finally using the search function to prospect.
Success takes time so be patient and consistent in your activity. My LinkedIn infographic should help you get started (click image to view full size).
