Because I think database technologies are among the most important fundamental advancements of humanity and our collective consciousness. I think databases are as important as telecommunications and the internet. I think they are as important as any scholarly library -- and that libraries are the earliest non-digital databases. I think databases are almost as important the invention of the written word.

This is all well and good, but you'll eventually have to read code out loud to another developer for some reason. And then you're in an awkward position, indeed. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately about the various disciplines of design, and how divided they all are from one another (as I’m sure is evidenced by some of my recent articles). Between the desire to be perceived as unique and the needs of a constantly-evolving industry, we’ve coined a large number job titles and functions that have branched out substantially from the roots of graphic design. Information design, information architecture, human-computer interaction, interface design, experience design… all of these disciplines trace their own roots back to graphic design, which represents the human desire for communication made manifest.
