Sweden’s Newest School System Has No Classrooms

Sweden’s Newest School System Has No Classrooms | AVID Kiene | Scoop.it

There are collaboration zones, houses-within-houses, and a slew of other features that are designed to foster “curiosity and creativity.” That’s according to Vittra, which runs 30 schools in Sweden. Their most recent school, Telefonplan School (see photos below) in Stockholm, could very well be the school of the future.

"In building the “iTools for the 1 iDevice Classroom” workshop, we felt there was a great need for modeling how various game-like apps can be utilized in multiple settings (e.g. cooperative pairs, small groups, stations, whole class). We also felt very strongly that it wasn’t enough to just talk about classroom and curricular uses but to truly model and discuss how task cards and recording sheets would be used and what follow-up and extension activities would look like."

Learning and Teaching with iPads: Students construct knowledge with their own iBooks

Learning and Teaching with iPads: Students construct knowledge with their own iBooks | AVID Kiene | Scoop.it

I was recently at Our Lady of the Angels Rouse Hill doing a workshop with them in creating iBooks using iBooks Author. The Principal Eva La Rocco and the teachers saw the main benefit for the software as a way of students demonstrating their own understanding and knowledge by creating an iBook that incorporated all their work. The focus being for the students to create content rather than it being pushed to them via a teacher created iBook textbook.

Teachers' Expectations Can Influence How Students Perform : NPR

Teachers' Expectations Can Influence How Students Perform : NPR | AVID Kiene | Scoop.it
Teachers' expectations about their students' abilities affect classroom interactions in myriad ways that can impact student performance. Students expected to succeed, for example, get more time to answer questions and more specific feedback.

A fascinating look at what can happen when teachers expectations for their students change, looking at "how do we get teachers to have the right expections?"

Seven suggestions are provided for ways "teachers can change their expections."

Right expectation let students have clear understanding of what they are supposed to achieve and behave. Hence, a right expectation is a good start of classroom management.

RM Education iPad lesson ideas

RM Education iPad lesson ideas | AVID Kiene | Scoop.it

Available via http://www.rm.com/_RMVirtual/Media/Downloads/ipad_lessonideas.pdf:

a 21 page pdf booklet from RM education with inquiry based lesson ideas, objectives and workflows around using various Apps and the iPad to achieve the learning outcomes.

e.g: “I’m a math teacher and I want to test my pupils’ understanding of key concepts explained in class. I give them an assignment ( individually or in pairs): they should imagine they are planning a school disco in aid of charity. Their task is to identify and research the possible costs, plan the budget for the event and answer some questions such as : What are the three main costs, what is the correct ticket price, how
many attendees should we have to break even and what is the value of the funds raised.”

Then goes on to outline an iPad App workflow for this learning task.

Apps in Education: Writing iPad Inspired Lessons

Apps in Education: Writing iPad Inspired Lessons | AVID Kiene | Scoop.it

This is an excellent post written by Lisa Johnson on May 18, 2011 on her blog Techchef4u. Make sure you check out her blog. This is what the rest of us have been waiting for. Lisa has put in a lot of time, energy and hard work creating some really clever lessons that incorporate ipad apps. She has obviously thought long and hard about the outcomes of each of the lessons and therefore selected apps that were appropriate to the type of learning that was required for each. Lisa has done this not just for her own subject area but across a range of areas.
