5am André is tired. With turbulence at 8'000 feet and a cold front close it is not possible for him tosleep tonight, and accumulated fatigue during the past 93 hours is making the situation challenging.
Team in the MCC is working hard to find solutions quickly, and help André during this very stressful period. He is really tired, and needs his whole team's attention and support, on the other side of the world.
The revolutionary Solar Impulse 2 aircraft passed 'the point of no return' Monday after it left Japan bound for Hawaii, the most ambitious leg of its quest to circumnavigate the globe powered only by the sun.
Swiss pilot Andre Borschberg, 62, left the city of Nagoya around 3:00 am (1800 GMT), five days after weather problems forced the organisers to cancel an earlier attempt.
"No Way Back! This is a one way ticket to Hawaii," tweeted @solarimpulse. "Andre Borschberg has passed the point of no return and must now see this 5 days 5 nights flight through to the end."
The Solar Impulse 2, a plane attempting to fly around the world using solar power, was forced to land Monday in Nagoya, Japan due to inclement weather.
The experimental aircraft — flown and financed by Swiss businessman and pilot André Borschberg — is now two months into its quest to become the first solar-powered plane to circumnavigate the Earth.
Pol Bacquet's insight:
I think this requires some precision. The idea came from Bertrand Piccard and André is his Partner. Many financial Partners have joined this extraordinary adventure and should not be neglected as Solvay, Omega, Schindler, ABB, Google,...and so many others (even small ones naming solar cells on the plane by their names !)
(CNN)Five days, five nights, one pilot -- and no fuel; Solar Impulse, the plane aiming to fly around the world powered only by the sun, has taken off on the toughest leg of its round-the-world voyage.
The 8,000-kilometer (4,971-mile) journey from Nanjing, China, to Hawaii -- dubbed the "moment of truth" by alternating pilots Andre Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard --was delayed several times because of poor conditions over the Pacific.
Mercedes-Benz and Lufthansa have teamed up to create this awesome futuristic private jet interior.
The German automaker is stepping to another kind of luxury by teaming up with Lufthansa Technik — the aviation engineer arm of the Lufthansa Group — to design a ultra-posh cabin for private jets.
The concept created by the two companies eliminates the traditional delineation between ceiling, wall, and floor designs. Instead, the interior concept deploys what the companies refer to as a "spiral layout," which melds the three design elements into a continuous, flowing feature.
Airbus plans to open an innovation centre in Silicon Valley, in the latest evidence of efforts by plane makers to woo technologists as potential partners. The move comes weeks after chief executive Tom Enders took Airbus’s top management team to California to see what lessons could be learned from the digital revolution.
“I think we see some promising avenues going forward. We have also decided to open a new innovation centre in Silicon Valley,” Enders told the Airbus annual meeting on Wednesday.
Aviation Week chief aircraft evaluation editor Fred George flew left seat in Airbus’s new big twin, the A350, with Airbus chief test pilot Peter Chandler in the right seat and Christian Norden on the jump seat as safety pilot.
A solar-powered plane attempting to fly around the world must cross the Pacific within a few weeks or it could remain stuck in Japan for a year, Bertrand Piccard said in an interview published Thursday. Solar Impulse 2, which has been stranded in Japan for three weeks and had to postpone a planned take off this week due to bad weather over the Pacific, only has a short window for making the next leg of its journey.
"Before August 5, we must have crossed the Pacific or the Atlantic," Piccard said, adding that if the team is unable to do so they will have to find a permanent hangar where the fragile aircraft can pass the winter.
An airport in Japan was readying Monday to welcome Solar Impulse 2 on an unscheduled stop after mission controllers decided the weather was not right for the sun-powered plane to cross the vast Pacific Ocean. The record-breaking aircraft was set to touch down in central Japan around 1400 GMT, the team said on its website. "On my way to Nagoya disappointed for not continuing but very thankful to the Japanese authorities for their support," pilot Andre Borschberg Tweeted.
L'avion à énergie solaire a décollé samedi de Chine, en direction d'Hawaï. Un vol de 8 500 kilomètres qui doit durer cinq jours, une performance jamais atteinte par un pilote seul à bord et sans escale.
Already 10 hours since André Borschberg left Nanjing. Solar Impulse is now flying above the ocean, in the South Korean airspace, on its route to the north of Japan.
HEALTH: some fatigue, as he could only rest 60minutes so far during the night, but the mood is good and no sign of nervousness. He could eat a breakfast already, prepared by Nestle (specific cereals, yoghourt). O2 mask is now necessary in the unpressurized cabin, as #Si2 is above 12 000ft. Temperature is getting cold, close to 0°C inside the cockpit.
TECH: batteries have been charging since Solar Impulse passed Shanghai, and are now at 100% state of charge, providing a surplus of energy as we are still ascending at around 25kts (indicated airspeed)

The FBI says in one instance U.S. military jets escorted an Air France flight into New York City after someone claimed a chemical weapon was aboard. The Maryland State Police Fusion Center received an anonymous call at about 6:45 a.m. of a "chemical weapons threat" aboard the flight. A senior federal official said the caller did not identify himself and the number was untraceable. The caller said four flights had devices on board but specified only the Air France flight. The airliner landed safely and a search turned up no weapons.
The A350 is Airbus’s largest, longest-range, highest-flying and fastest-cruising twin. The A350-900, the first version now entering service withQatar Airways and other carriers, is a larger aircraft than Boeing’s 787. With nine-abreast economy seating, the A350 can fly 315 passengers 7,750 nm at Mach 0.85. The 787-9 seats 280 and has a maximum range of 8,300 nm.
