Virgin plane kept flying for five days with 'significant structural damage' | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it

Virgin Australia Regional Airlines operated one of its turboprops on 13 sectors after an incident that the airline later suspected might have caused "significant structural damage" to the tailplane, says an initial report from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

The 68-seat ATR-72 aircraft, registered as VH-FVR, has been grounded in Albury for more than three months awaiting replacement of the horizontal stabiliser, elevator and vertical stabiliser, which provide stability and control to the aircraft.

The Boost project was unveiled as part of an Air France strategic plan in November 2016 in a bid to regain the offensive in the face of strong Gulf carrier competition and to stem losses on Air France’s weakest long-haul routes.

Aerospace engineers have designed carbon nanotube 'stitches' that strongly bind composites, which could produce lighter, more damage-resistant airplanes.

The newest Airbus and Boeing passenger jets flying today are made primarily from advanced composite materials such as carbon fiber reinforced plastic -- extremely light, durable materials that reduce the overall weight of the plane by as much as 20 percent compared to aluminum-bodied planes.
