The black box: Boeing, Airbus disagree on crash ejection

The black box: Boeing, Airbus disagree on crash ejection | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it
The world's two largest commercial aircraft manufacturers are at odds over equipping airliners with black boxes that eject in the event of a crash, making them easier to find.

Airbus is nearly ready to equip airliners with data and cockpit voice recorders that eject so that they can float to the ocean's surface instead of becoming trapped in wreckage, Pascal Andrei, the French aircraft maker's chief product security officer, told a US forum of the National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday.

Airbus says may win new A380 customer by year-end

Airbus says may win new A380 customer by year-end | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it
Airbus sees a "distinct possibility" of adding at least one new customer for its A380 superjumbo jet before the end of the year, the European planemaker's sales chief John Leahy told Reuters on Thursday. Currently, Airbus has a total of 318 orders from 19 customers for the world's largest passenger jet, which is designed to carry 525 passengers. He was speaking after Airbus on Wednesday revised down its demand forecast for the industry's largest category of aircraft, which includes the A380 and the Boeing 747-8, while revising up its overall 20-year jet demand forecast. Airbus lost one of its existing A380 customers in July when it revoked an order for six A380s from Japan's Skymark Airlines, which faced difficulties financing its purchase.

Humanoid pilot: PIBOT, a toy-sized robot, learns how to fly a real plane (VIDEO) | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it
It might be not long from now that robots will be flying planes. A tiny humanoid robot proved that when he successfully completed a take-off, a short flight and a landing in a flight simulator.

Going by the name PIBOT, the robot knows how to use each button and switch that can be found in a real cockpit of an ordinary civilian aircraft.

In a video featuring the robot, PIBOT is seen preparing flight during a simulation, grabbing control sticks and guiding “the plane” from take-off back to landing. The footage was presented at a robotics event, called IROS 2014, in Chicago last week.

Your Air France Flight May Be Canceled: Here's What You Need to Know - SmarterTravel.com

Your Air France Flight May Be Canceled: Here's What You Need to Know - SmarterTravel.com | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it

As we enter week two of the Air France pilots' strike, the French flag carrier continues to warn passengers of possible flight disruptions. Last week, the airline grounded more than half of its flights, and the company is losing tens of millions in revenue by the day.

As of today, Air France is operating just 41 percent of its regularly scheduled flights. There's no end to the strike in sight.

The airline's pilots' unions went on strike after Air France-KLM announced its plans to beef up its low-cost carrier, Transvania. In short, the pilots anticipate the move to a low-cost model will affect pay and working conditions. The strike is huge: This is Europe's second-largest carrier, and it's the biggest labor dispute that Air France has seen since 1998.

Inside the world's most luxurious first class cabin with Qatar Airways' new Airbus 380

Inside the world's most luxurious first class cabin with Qatar Airways' new Airbus 380 | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it
The upper deck of the airline's new A380 plane features eight first-class 'suites' - ultra-wide seats which each measure 23 inches wide, and are covered in a soft leather and engraved copper.

Each seat converts to a fully flat 2.2 metre-long bed, while each passenger gets their own wardrobe with pockets containing slippers, pyjamas and Giorgio Armani and Christian Dior amenity kits.

Tucked away towards the rear of the A380's upper deck is a spacious inflight lounge and bar, which has been described as 'a sanctuary in the sky'.

Qatar says the lounge not only 'offers passengers an escape from the typical airplane environment' but has been designed to exude the feel of a private 'executive club'.

Under the stunning chandeliers, inspired by contemporary Arabian design, passengers are treated to vases of fresh flowers throughout the lounge and a large leather settee.

Low-cost? Low chance for Air France and Lufthansa

Low-cost? Low chance for Air France and Lufthansa | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it
Venerable old airlines Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) and Air France (AIRF.PA) know the smart money is in the low-cost market –Ryanair (RYA.I) raised its forecasts again on Thursday - but powerful labor unions are keeping them from the bounty. The full-cost airlines were slow to respond to the explosive growth of the likes of Ryanair and easyJet (EZJ.L) from the late 1990s for fear of cannibalizing their main revenue and because the upstarts were not directly competing on the same routes, and the efforts of Lufthansa and Air France were modest at best. Air France's big plans to expand its Transavia low-cost unit are in trouble due to a costly strike by French pilots who fear the project would mean lower pay and jobs moving elsewhere.

(Reuters) - Bookings for Lufthansa's (LHAG.DE) new "premium economy" class, part of a 3 billion euro (2.36 billion pounds) investment in new seats and in-flight entertainment options, are ahead of expectations, an executive at the German airline said on Tuesday.

"We are extremely satisfied with the bookings," Jens Bischof, chief commercial officer of Lufthansa German airlines, said on the sidelines of the FVW travel conference.

"The marketing campaign only started last week and when we consider that most of these bookings were done without marketing, then it's good news for us," he added.

Airlines Want New Narrowbody Designs, Manufacturers Reluctant | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it

Airlines still are urging Boeing and Airbus to consider developing new and larger single-aisle jets even after the two plane makers decided to forego such projects in favor of upgrades to their existing aircraft models.

"We would want an aircraft that is slightly larger than then the current families" of narrowbodies, said Nico Buchholz, executive vice president for fleet management at Deutsche Lufthansa. The aircraft should be able to comfortably seat 170 to 240 passengers, he said.

Air France Pilots Vow to Extend Strike Indefinitely

Air France Pilots Vow to Extend Strike Indefinitely | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it

PARIS — Air France pilots rejected a proposal from management on Monday and vowed to extend indefinitely a strike that has grounded tens of thousands of passengers over the last week and threatens to wipe out tens of millions of dollars in revenue.

In a statement, the Air France branch of the French National Union of Airline Pilots dismissed an offer by the management of Air France-KLM, the French-Dutch group, to postpone the implementation of a new European strategy until the end of this year as “unacceptable.”

Pol Bacquet's insight:

This is absolutely non sense !... Air France Pilots are more than arrogant and so confortable on their benefits. Hard for them to come with solutions to save their Company.
