Lufthansa Sees Hybrid Plane-Taxi Towtruck Approval in Two Months | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it

Lufthansa said a hybrid-power towtruck is testing for extended taxiing of planes at Frankfurt airport may win regulatory approval for commercial use in two months.

The technology has the potential to save 1.9 million euros ($2.57 million) a year in long-haul operations at the airport alone, the company said in a presentation at an industry event.

Lufthansa’s project is part of a 15.7 million-euro program at Frankfurt airport, Europe’s third-busiest, to switch to alternative energy for ground-handling vehicles to reduce fuel costs, exhaust emissions and noise. The diesel-electric TaxiBot tractor has passed European Aviation Safety Agencytests and now needs certification, Lufthansa said.

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17: Ukraine crash may be too much for airline to recover from

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17: Ukraine crash may be too much for airline to recover from | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it
After two air disasters within a span of months, speculation is mounting that Malaysia Airlines won't be able to overcome the catastrophes as the airline was deeply in debt even before its problems captured the world's attention.

The tragedy comes barely four months after Malaysia Airlines became a household name for another tragedy, after flight MH370 disappeared from radar screens on a flight out of Kuala Lumpur, never to be seen again. Well before the twin tragedies, Malaysia Airlines was in financial trouble, even when compared to the low bar set for financial stability in the aviation industry.

Renzi warns Alitalia must cut jobs or face bankruptcy - Channel NewsAsia | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it

"It's clear that everyone has to make sacrifices," Renzi said, as government-mediated talks between the airline's management and unions continue over plans to axe 2,200 jobs.

"It's not about 'x' number of jobs or 'y' number of jobs being cut. It's about that or closure," he said.

Hawaiian to Add New Airbus A330-800neo to Fleet

Hawaiian to Add New Airbus A330-800neo to Fleet | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it
HONOLULU, July 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Hawaiian Airlines today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Airbus to acquire six new A330-800neo aircraft starting in 2019, with rights to purchase an additional six aircraft as part of the carrier's vision to serve farther non-stop destinations from Hawai'i. The order replaces Hawaiian Airline's existing order for six A350XWB-800 aircraft, which were due for delivery from 2017. Hawaiian Airline's overall capital commitments will decrease in absolute terms and will be pushed further into the future. "The A330-800neo's fuel efficiency, additional range and commonality with our existing A330 fleet makes the A330-800neo an elegant solution to our need for growth aircraft toward the end of this decade," said Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian Airlines president and chief executive officer.

Following a 3.5-year development period, Airbus plans to deliver the first A330-900neo in the fourth quarter of 2017 and the smaller A330-800neo a few months later.

The new A330 family will be made up of the A330-800neo, replacing the A330-200, and the A330-900neo, succeeding the A330-300. “We are able to do it in 3.5 years because we can take an off-the-shelf engine,” Airbus President and CEO Fabrice Bregier notes.
