United flight diverted after passengers fight over legroom

United flight diverted after passengers fight over legroom | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it

An incident this week involving two United Airlines’ passengers who apparently got into an argument after one used a gadget to stop the other from reclining her seat is causing quite a bit of general media interest.

It seems that one passenger had acquired a gadget that is inserted in the back of the seat in front, making it impossible for that seat to be reclined. The guy wanted to use his laptop.

The passenger in front, meanwhile, objected and, according to reports, threw a glass of water over the guy after he refused a flight attendant’s request to remove the gadget.

This set of antics resulted in the aircraft, which was enroute from Newark to Denver, being diverted to Chicago, where both passengers were escorted off the plane.

Pol Bacquet's insight:

...you wonder what’s gone wrong in the world that people can no longer politely ask their neighbor not to recline their seat for an hour while they work/eat.

Air France pilots threaten September strike - The Local | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it

More travel chaos could be on the way after Air France pilots threatened a strike during the month of September. The pilots are angry over a massive corporate reorganization plan.

The union representing most of Air France's pilots has promised to file a strike notice this week which, if they follow through with it, could mean major travel disruption for plane passengers next month.

“We will file notice this week, that’s sure, because today the threat to our jobs is too serious,” Jean-Louis Barber, president of pilots’ union SNPL France Alpa, wrote in a letter to Air France.

Future of air travel may consist of windowless airplanes

Future of air travel may consist of windowless airplanes | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it

No matter how you put it, the window seat is always the best when travelling via "the highway in the sky." Watching the world pass below you from thousands of feet in the air is an incredibly enthralling experience and effectively takes your mind off that sad, stale bag of honey-roasted peanuts in your hand.

Such is the case with Technicon Design's new private jet concept "Ixion." Described as a "windowless" jet, the design features a large, open-glass cabin to provide an immersive flying experience:

"We quickly settled on the controversial yet interesting idea of removing the windows from the cabin and using existing or very near future technology to display the exterior environment to the inside surfaces of the cabin via external cameras. Removing the windows allows for weight reduction, simplifies construction and opens up an enormous spectrum of possibilities for interior design.

Nearly 200 cabin crew have resigned from Malaysia Airlines which was hit by two deadly tragedies this year, with some reportedly citing fears for their safety.

How does ILS (Instrument landing system) work?

How does ILS (Instrument landing system) work? | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it

The ILS works using two components, a localizer and a glideslope. The frequencies for the localizer are between 108.1-111.95 MHz and the glide slope between 329.15-335.0 MHz. These frequencies are the carrier waves that the modulation you mention takes place upon. A pilot is only concerned with the localizer frequency as the navigation equipment knows the paired glideslope frequency for any given localizer frequency.

Opinion: Ryanair Causing Dust-Up In France | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it

Ryanair threatens legal action against French publisher for defamation; in an unrelated matter, the airline defends its national benefits pay-in.

In a not entirely unexpected move,Ryanair asserts that a book published last year in France—an expose, of sorts, of the airline’s strategy—is defamatory. The Irish low-cost airline states that it will take Editions Altipresse to court, but toward exactly what end has not been made clear. The book, Ryanair, Low Cost Mais à Quel Prix? (Ryanair, Low-Cost, but at What Price?) was released in May 2013 and now, 14 months later, a legal protest probably is not feasible.
