Boeing wins contract to build new Air Force One presidential jets

Boeing wins contract to build new Air Force One presidential jets | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it
Boeing Co (BA.N) has won a contract to start preliminary work on a new fleet of Air Force One presidential aircraft based on its 747-8 jumbo jet, the Pentagon said on Friday.

The Air Force decision was widely expected since the only other suitable four-engine jet is the A380 built by Airbus in Toulouse, France.

The 747-8 is the only four-engine commercial jet Boeing makes, providing an extra margin of flight safety over the more standard twin-engine planes.

Air attendants' uniforms reflect our changing relationship with flight

Air attendants' uniforms reflect our changing relationship with flight | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it
Flight attendants' uniforms are drip-dry and crease-resistant, designed to withstand wear and tear, multiple washes and multiple flights. Not exactly a fashion fantasy. That hasn't prevented various designers being been drafted in to design uniforms, with varying degrees of success. From Cristóbal Balenciaga in 1968, who created a chic clutch of them for Air France, through to New York designer Zac Posen, whose Delta Airlines designs will be unveiled in 2018.

Boeing’s 737 MAX takes wing with new engines, high hopes | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it
The latest Renton-built version of Boeing’s narrowbody jet is the company’s contender in the competition with Airbus for the crucial short-haul market. Watch the first flight

Just over seven weeks after it rolled out of the paint hangar, the first 737 MAX — the “Spirit of Renton” — had a smooth first flight Friday, proclaiming Boeing’s ambition to stay competitive against Airbus for the next decade in the crucial short-haul airliner market.

As rain closed in, bringing the threat that low clouds might delay the flight, the jet took off slightly earlier than expected from its namesake city at 9:48 a.m. piloted by Capt. Ed Wilson, 737 chief pilot.

Lufthansa launching several app-based luggage innovations this year

Lufthansa launching several app-based luggage innovations this year | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it
Through its app, Lufthansa hopes to keep passengers informed of luggage delays and to simplify (and speed up) the bag drop process.

A couple of weeks ago, every thinkpiece in your feed was already attempting to define 2016 as “The Year of…” but, for Lufthansa, it’s the year of luggage solutions – and it doesn’t need 2,500 words to explain why. The German carrier has been experimenting with digital bag tags for the past few months but, this year, it expects to place its touchless bag drop system in additional airports and also to make it easier for passengers to claim compensation, should the airline somehow misplace their luggage.

No it’s not a misprint. It’s true.

In the months and years to come these twin-engined planes will be plying Lufthansa’s most important European routes. Some are expected to be reallocated to other Lufthansa Group carriers.

Why the sun is setting on the Boeing 747 - CNN.com

Why the sun is setting on the Boeing 747 - CNN.com | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it
After changing aviation and the entire tourism industry, the venerable Boeing 747 may be nearing the end of its production life.

It's difficult to imagine now, in the age of mass global travel, that building an airplane to carry hundreds of people at a time was once seen as a huge risk.

But as the world's first wide-body airliner, the Boeing 747 went on to change not only aviation but the entire tourism industry.

Its economic design did much to move international travelwithin reach of middle-class vacationers rather than just the privileged few.

However, the venerable Boeing 747 may be nearing the end of its production life -- its manufacturing rate is to be halved to six a year.

100 Years Of Attention To Safety in Aviation Brings Results

100 Years Of Attention To Safety in Aviation Brings Results | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it
With 1962 fatal accident rates coupled with today’s rate of departures, there would be a major jet crash every other day, but there were only two in 2015.

The air safety process has been neither linear nor organized, and there’s no one single factor involved. Comedian George Carlin once asked, “If the black box flight recorder is never damaged during a plane crash, why isn’t the whole airplane made out of that stuff?” Not only has there not been a technological breakthrough of that kind, but one of today’s most widely produced airliners is an evolved version of an airplane designed in 1965.

The Remaining Boeing 747-8 Orders Re-Visited

The Remaining Boeing 747-8 Orders Re-Visited | Aviation & Airliners | Scoop.it

Boeing has less than two dozen confirmed 747-8 aircraft orders left to fill, and there has been little change to the order books over the past year, although in a report by Bloomberg, Randy Tinseth, Vice President of Marketing for Boeing, did say that there are some “near term opportunities” for the 747-8.

Boeing offers both passenger and freighter versions of the 747-8, but close to 60% of the orders have been for the 747-8F. Industry analysts predict that the world’s air cargo market’s growth rate will need to increase quite a bit to cause airlines to place more orders for the 747-8 in order for 747 production to continue.

Often passengers on long-haul flights do not stop and think about the need for the flight crew to rest. Pilots and flight attendants only have a certain number of hours that they can work, and then they need their time to rest.

Some airlines opt for crew rest areas either above or below the passenger cabin of the aircraft, while others will have crew just use your standard passenger seat.
