Aerospace & Defense Industry Thrives Amid Budget Cuts LMT NOC SPR - Investor's Business Daily | Aviation & Aerospace & Defense | Scoop.it

The aerospace and defense industry has been one of the surprise winners of 2013.

Stocks of Lockheed Martin (LMT), Northrop Grumman (NOC) and Boeing (BA) were expected to take a hit from sharp government budget cuts, known as the sequester, that took effect in March. Congress passed a budget bill this week to ease the cuts. President Obama is expected to sign it into law...

Sweden: new grey NH90 IM on its way - HKP14 IM - "International Mission"

Sweden: new grey NH90 IM on its way - HKP14 IM - "International Mission" | Aviation & Aerospace & Defense | Scoop.it

The Swedish Armed Forces Helicopter Command in Linköping has confirmed on October 2, 2013, that the new grey painted NH90 MI is about to arrive. Before the end of the year the new version of the helicopter will be introduced and will start to fly alongside the American-made Blackhawks.

Helikopter 14 International Mission (HKP 14 IM) as the type is designated within the Swedish armed forces will have new gear, besides the grey colour. Compared to the four green painted base versions already delivered to the Swedish Armed Forces, the HKP 14 IM has a anti-sandfilter (ASF) on the air intakes, a winch at the right side and an electro-optic sensor (EOS) in the nose with a day camera, IR-camera and laser range metre. The new version will also be able to open the ramp in the back and load equipment underneath its belly. The first HKP 14 IM has tail number 50.

Protection plates against incoming bullets, armoured seating in the cockpit and extra navigation and sensor systems will be new on the inside of the helicopter. After the first new grey NH90 has been delivered, 13 will follow. The four green HKP 14s already delivered will be upraded to the new standard. The ‘greens’ bear tail number 42, 43, 44, 45.

Right now the Swedish Armed Forces have four certified pilots to fly the new type. Although Helikopterflottiljen at F3 Malsmslätt airbase in Linköping is the principal operator, the Swedish NH90s will be dispatched to 3 Helicopter Squadron in Ronneby, near Karlskrona naval base in the south, and 1 Helicopter Squadron at Kallax in Luleå close to the border with Finland.

It is still uncertain whether Sweden will keep its 15 UH-60M Blackhawk helicopters (HKP 16) long-term. The Scandinavian country quickly bought and received the M-version as first European customer from the Americans to fill the gap of the much delayed arrival of the NH90. The Swedes seem to be very happy with the Blackhawk’s performance, proving it even in combat in Afghanistan. Since April four of Helikopterflottiljen HKP 16s are flying as SAE ISAF Medevac (Swedish Air Element ISAF Medical Evacuation) from the German ISAF Camp Marmal near Mazar-i-Sharif in the north of Afghanistan.

Experts believe the Blackhawk will serve both the Swedish expeditionary forces policy and the country’s climate better than the NH90, but the decision to keep both types flying might depend a lot on budgetary calculations.

Swedish Air Force receives first upgraded NH90 helicopter - Hkp 14 - TTT/IM

Swedish Air Force receives first upgraded NH90 helicopter - Hkp 14 - TTT/IM | Aviation & Aerospace & Defense | Scoop.it

The Swedish Air Force (SwAF) has received into service its first upgraded NHIndustries NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopter (TTH), the Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 17 December.

The helicopter arrived at the main operating base of the Swedish Helicopter Wing at Malmen Air Base near Linköping directly from the production facility in Finland.

Designated Helicopter [HKP] 14D (or HKP 14TTT/IM [Tactical Troop Transport/International Model]) in Swedish service, the upgraded NH90 is the first of 14 such helicopters that will be handed over to the SwAF at a rate of one per quarter. The four basic configuration NH90s that are currently in service will be retrofitted to the HPK 14D standard, an MoD spokesperson told IHS Jane's .

Once in service, these 18 helicopters will be divided between 1 Helicopter Squadron at Luleå (Kallax) Airport near the Finnish border, and 3 Helicopter Squadron at Kallinge (Ronneby) Airport in the far south of Sweden. Unit deliveries will commence in March/April of 2014, to be followed shortly after by the declaration of initial operating capability (IOC).

While the basic configuration HPK 14 was suitable only for flight training, the upgraded variant helicopter is fully mission capable. The HPK 14D's equipment fit includes digital displays and moving maps, a weather radar, an electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor turret, laser rangefinder, deicing systems, as well as missile warning and countermeasure systems. Ten sets of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) sensors will be acquired to be fitted as required, and the fleet will be fitted with the Saab Tactical Mission System (TMS) so as to be integrated with Sweden's network-based defence concept.

In SwAF service, the HPK 14D will be used for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), tactical troop transport (TTT), search-and-rescue, and medical evacuation operations. According to Saab, a key requirement is the ability to reconfigure the helicopter between the ASW and TTT roles within two hours.

Sweden first declared its intent to procure the NH90 in September 2001, when it placed a SEK6 billion (USD913 million in today's money) order for 18 helicopters and associated equipment. Deliveries were due to commence in 2005, but delays meant that it was 2007 before the first helicopter was handed over to the FMV procurement agency. The SwAF received its first basic configured helicopter in 2011.

The initial contract for 18 NH90s included an option for a further seven aircraft. However, in January 2012 Sweden confirmed it would not be taking up the option following the acquisition of 15 Sikorsky UH-60M (HPK 16) Black Hawk helicopters.

Australian Defence Force commissions first MRH90 simulator - CAE Level -D- FFMS - Full Flight Mission Simulator

Australian Defence Force commissions first MRH90 simulator - CAE Level -D- FFMS - Full Flight Mission Simulator | Aviation & Aerospace & Defense | Scoop.it

The Australian Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) has commissioned the first of two MRH90 full-flight and mission simulators (FFMSs) at the Army Aviation training centre in Oakey, Queensland, Australia.

Manufactured by CAE under a A$180m ($160.8m) contract awarded in December 2007, the simulator is designed to enable both Australian Army and Navy pilots to practice skills in all flight regimes, day or night, by precisely replicating the actual feel of the aircraft in flight.

Defence Materiel Organisation chief executive officer, Warren King, said the flight simulator will contribute to the Australian Defence Forces' (ADF) helicopter capability for many years to come.

''The MRH90 simulator has a cockpit that functions just like that of a real aircraft, and replicates the aircraft's unique instrument display which is projected onto the pilots' visors,'' King said.

Army Aviation training centre commander colonel, David Burke, said the simulator helps instructors to present pilots with a range of operational training scenarios, including flying into remote bush landing sites, flying in formation with other aircraft and being safely exposed to complex emergency situations.

''The majority of basic training will now be conducted in the simulator before pilots get to the real aircraft,'' Burke said.

''The aim of the training is to immerse the pilots in the simulation, so they feel as though they are flying the real aircraft, completing real missions and dealing with real emergencies.''

Manufactured in collaboration with Thales, MRH90 simulator is formally certified to Level D, which represents highest standards of fidelity in the aviation industry.

The second simulator is scheduled to be installed at the main MRH90 operational base in Townsville during 2014.

MRH 90 is a 10t-class medium-lift helicopter designed to conduct troop transport, search and rescue, special operations and counter-terrorism missions in adverse conditions.
