ODE TO ANDY ROONEY: My Social Media ‘Pet Peeves’, Part One | Digital Ethos | Avant-garde Art & Design | Scoop.it
This detailed statistical analysis that I have conducted on facebook page covers provides an ironclad conclusion.
Alison D. Gilbert's insight:

There was a time in ancient facebook history that 'The Facebook Timelines for Business Page Cover Primer' was the definitive handbook for how to design one's facebook page. The information provided has become so outdated that it adds to my petpeeves about facebook.

No one followed the guidelines facebook set up and eventually the customer won out. Facebook has continued to modify their guidelines to accomodate its users and to find new ways to charge for their irresistible tools.

TWITTER TAKES ON 2013 | Digital Ethos | Avant-garde Art & Design | Scoop.it

It has been known for sometime that images enhance social media the way the talkies transformed the film industry. It was a long time coming but visual design finally caught up to social media. Or did social media finally wake up to visual design? That does not matter. What does matter is that they finally got together and their marriage is one that was made in heaven, for the most part.

Alison D. Gilbert's insight:

It has been a boon to social media that visual data has been integrated into verbal, code based information.

Mongolia's Nomads

Mongolia's Nomads | Avant-garde Art & Design | Scoop.it
Mongolian pastoral herders make up one of the world's last remaining nomadic cultures. For millennia they have lived on the steppes, grazing their livestock on the lush grasslands.
Alison D. Gilbert's insight:

This feature of Mongolia's Nomads from the 'Global Oneness Project' is absolutely fascinating to me. The changing economic landscape, climate change, desertification and other factors are a threat to their traditions and very existence.

This photo essay by Taylor Weidman captures the life of these Mongolian pastoral herders who are one of the last remaining nomadic cultures on the earth. It is both art and culture

Alison D. Gilbert's curator insight, December 31, 2013 8:27 AM

Mongolia's Nomads have roamed the steppes for millenia.  Climate change, desertification, and other factors are destroying the land, killing off the animals and making their indigenous way of life obsolete.

Will we be in time to save any indigenous cultures on this planet? I doubt it. The Global Oneness Project is a program designed  to document,  both visually and verbally, these extraordinary cultures and ways of life. The Mongolia's Nomads photo essay was created by Taylor Weidman. There is a companion book available, 'Mongolia's Nomads: Life On The Steppes'. It is sold by the Vanishing Cultures Project

8 Remarkable Artists Who Create Art with Nails | Paslode-Nails.com Blog | Avant-garde Art & Design | Scoop.it

"If you thought nail art was all about talon-based diamanté and acrylic, take a look at these metallic masterpieces. Innovative artists and designers have used the humble household nail to make these remarkable visual creations. Some have been hammered by hand, some have been made using a trusty nail gun. Either way, we can’t take our eyes off these stunners. The overall effect is magnificent, but the work and vision that has gone into them is simply spellbinding."

This type of creating art with nails is absolutely amazing.

ODE TO ANDY ROONEY: My Social Media ‘Pet Peeves’, Part Two | Digital Ethos

ODE TO ANDY ROONEY: My Social Media ‘Pet Peeves’, Part Two | Digital Ethos | Avant-garde Art & Design | Scoop.it

The first part of this blog post detailed my first ‘pet peeve’ about facebook. It involves the new ‘timelines for business pages’ and the page cover designs in particular. You can refer back to that post, Ode to Andy Rooney: My Social Media Pet Peeves, Part One to read it as well. This post, Part Two, will explore my ‘pet peeve’ #2.

Alison D. Gilbert's insight:

Facebook has become like the shape-shifter of social media. One day's rules are obsolete the next. The face if facebook pages keep changing. Although design plays an important part in this evolution, it has become next to impossible to keep up with these re-incarnations.
Another example of constant change has been the purposes of getting LIKES, the algorhythms, SEO, nothing stays the same. Now there are sponsored posts and all kinds of paid advertising, too.

How to make your very own Cabbage Patch Kid

I think this is hysterically funny considering the source, HolyKaw.alltop.com, a brainchild of Guy Kawasaki. We need some silly humor once in a while to lighten things up.
