David Byrne's Commencement Speech at Columbia School of the Arts

David Byrne's Commencement Speech at Columbia School of the Arts | Avant-garde Art & Design | Scoop.it
the chair of the visual-arts program, Gregory Amenoff, took to the podium to recap some of Byrne’s multi-disciplinary career highlights.
Alison D. Gilbert's insight:

According to Daniel Pink, former Al Gore speech writer, the creatives are going to be in demand. They may not necessarily be in technically creative positions. But their creative skills will put them at a tremendous advantage in the work force.

I also think that what David Byrne did by being so negative in his speech, sucks!

Intriguing study reveals the secrets of successful infographics

Intriguing study reveals the secrets of successful infographics | Avant-garde Art & Design | Scoop.it
What makes an infographic successful? As designers, we want it to achieve a balance of two main things: Did the reader get the message we wanted them to get?

...To the surprise of the researchers, bar graphs and charts did poorly. It turns out (news flash) they all kinda look the same. The most memorable images contained “human recognizable objects.” Think mundane stuff like photos or illustrations of bottles, animals and shoes, not to mention people.

Other important points:

Color made a huge difference: the more, the better.Images with more clutter were highly memorable. How much more memorable? A lot.Images with lots of circles and rounded corner graphics also ranked high.

Welcome | Quixote Village

Welcome | Quixote Village | Avant-garde Art & Design | Scoop.it

"Quixote Village grew from the vision of a self-governing tent camp of homeless adults in Olympia, Washington.  The Village consists of 30 tiny cottages, a large vegetable garden and a community building that contains showers, laundry facilities, a communal kitchen and living and dining space.  Village residents moved from Camp Quixote to the Village on Christmas Eve, 2013."

Alison D. Gilbert's insight:

A novel solution to homelessness. What was once a tent village now has 30 permanent tiny houses and a community building. It was funded by the Panza non-profit organization.

Alison D. Gilbert's curator insight, March 30, 12:37 PM

I am completely fascinated by Quixote Village. It was a tent village for homeless people. It has been transformed. Whit the use of tiny houses combined with a community building, Quixote Village is now a home for the residents who have roofs over their heads. It is a place to really call home.

"The Village is supported by Panza, a non-profit organization that grew out of the many faith communities that hosted and sustained Camp Quixote during its 6+ years of existence."

The Last Gasps of Rizzoli Bookstore

The Last Gasps of Rizzoli Bookstore | Avant-garde Art & Design | Scoop.it

"The Rizzoli Bookstore is now closed. I was there for the final minutes last Friday, along with the rest of the staff. We stood outside the building on West 57th street drinking champagne, smoking cigarettes, staring at the hired guns sent by the LeFrak family and Vornado Realty to start boarding us up at 7:30pm sharp."

Alison D. Gilbert's insight:

A brick and mortar bookstore, even one as gorgeous and historical as the Rizzoli Bookstore was, is less important than one online. You can't have a wine and cheese book reading on Amazon. The end of an era, indeed.

Then there are the Tabasco lovers but, come on, their opinions are not valid.
